Diet-related Insomnia?

Quote  |  Reply

I am experiencing something weird these days and is wondering if anyone has similar things going on...

When I started eating sensibly, my sleep cycle was fine. Then, I started having insomnia at night. Normally I needed about 7 hours of sleep each night in order to function everyday, but I just started having trouble falling asleep, and then I woke up in the middle of the night, not able to sleep again. I was averaging less than 4 hrs each night!

But I don't feel tired at all with so little sleep, which is odd. I hate the insomnia though, 'cause all I can think about is food!

Then yesterday I had a binge. It was a big one, but I felt fine since I kinda knew it was coming. Right after it I suddenly felt so TIRED that I couldn't even get home soon enough to sleep. I woke up 10 hours later, having had a great night sleeping. What was going on? What is my body telling me?

that you're PROBABLY not eating enough.

I'm recovering from anorexia, but I can only sleep like 8 hours (I used to be able to sleep more than 12) before my body wakes itself up. When I was really consumed by my ED, I would wake up STARVING in the middle of the night.

you're probably not eating enough..especially if you binged and if you wake up thinking about food.

Yes, you might be in starvation mode.

Or it could be like...I don't know how to put this into words...but you know how you eat a big feast like at Thanksgiving and then you get sleepy right afterwards? Big meals tend to make everyone tired.
Maybe going a little lighter in the day and save most your cals for dinner might help?

I've had exactly the same problems.  I think the waking up in the middle of the night is because your body is hungry. I find that having something 1/2 hour before i go to bed, like a banana, some yoghurt, or hot cocoa (made with skimmed milk), helps me to sleep and I'm less likely to wake up seriously early, and those foods are only 100-150 calories so shouldn't disrupt your diet.
