I've never been a big diet soda drinker, I stick mainly to water.
But as a treat, a diet soda helps that sugar craving that sometimes comes. Have you guys heard recently, though that diet sodas hold onto your belly fat? Is that just another one of those rumors?
It has 0 cals, but I'm just worried about what it does to my system...I've been trying to 'eat clean' as much as possible with diet soda and flavored yogurts being the place where I detract.
How bad are they for you???
For a while, I was practically addicted to diet soda! I thought it was curbing my appetite... but really it made me crave sweets even more. I've stopped drinking it and I feel a lot better (and I have been losing weight :) )
YUCK! Diet soda is sick. I people force themselves to like it, but for what? It may have 0 calories, but it is NOT healthy.
Personally, if I have artificial sweeteners I feel hungry anyways. It's like empty calories without the calories.
If you like soda, stick with the regular, but make sure it's as an occasional treat. I learned to like coffee to get my caffeine. I put some creamer or milk in it (milk preferred) and sugar and for about 60 cals, it's not so bad. If I want a soda every few days or once a week or so it's not going to kill me or gain a pound.
Man I HATE diet! LOL
A couple years ago I stopped drinking diet soda and was at my skinniest weight. I then went back to drinking a couple cans a day and my weight ballooned. I stopped drinking it last month and again I am starting to see weight loss, especially in my midsection where I tend to pack on the most weight. In my skewed perception of things I tend to believe the rumor is true to some degree. But you have to realize that when someone is cutting out diet soda they typically are making other lifestyle changes as well that can contribute to weight loss.
personally i've been drinking diet soda since i was a kid so its a comforting familiar taste and it fills me up(i dont understand how they say it makes you crave more). its defenitally not healthy thought, just not calorie laden. as far as it holding on to belly fat, even at my heaviest weight i hardly had any belly fat. now i wear small/xsmall shirts hardly no bellyfat and i drink diet soda regularly. just keep in mind long term effects of drinking diet artificially sweetened drinks are unknown.
I LIKE the taste of diet soda. There are a lot of myths surrounding it as well, but I can say from experience that I've lost 20 pounds drinking it instead of regular soda. It doesn't make me crave, it hasn't held onto my stomach fats, and it isn't as bad for your health as some people would like you to believe.
That doesn't mean its GOOD for you, but it isnt going to kill you.
Also to the post above me, it isn't unknown. No credible study has ever been able to show that there is ANY negative effect to drinking artifical sweeteners (within normal amounts, meaning not eating or drinking tons of it a day) in humans.
One study did show that when people drank diet soda they had more calories the next day. The flaw is that the next day they drank regular soft drinks. So of course they had more calories.
I wouldn't be surprised...but why would you want to drink something that can be used as a rust remover?
This subject gets me.....Several months ago I switched from regular soda to diet and actually ended up gaining weight. I have read articles and what not that do say diet soda can lead to bloating which would make your midsection larger....and then some of you say that you HAVE lost weight while still drinking diet soda..... Guess the only way for me to find out for sure is to try and cut it out completely and see what happens : )

Diet soda is no differant than any other carbonated drink in terms of rust-removing properties.

Mythbusters managed to use salsa to dissolve iron bars and salami as a "rocket fuel". Lots of food products can be alternatively used for things that would sound sinister, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily unsafe.
Switching from regular coke (which I love like drugs, no joke) to diet was the best thing I could've done and I'm not giving up the diet stuff now. I drink diet sierra mist and diet root beer - I keep them in my house and they're great to have with a meal. I realize that my answer is not the popular one or the most nutritious but I have to give up so many other things while dieting that this is one that I am not ready to give up - maybe someday, but I just can't see it in the near future.
I am not a huge fan of soda. A big mug of tea sweetened with xylitol does it for me. Or, if it's hot: Iced Tea. Or lemonade. OR iced tea AND lemonade. Arnold Palmer ftw.
I do have a problem saying no to Monster Lo-Carb energy drinks though. I love caffeine :(
I have been drinking diet soda since I was a kid. I absolutely HATE the taste of regular soda; it's so sweet! Diet soda really takes away the sweet cravings for me. Like I'll be craving icecream or something, and I'll drink a glass of diet soda, and they'll disappear.
I am trying to cut myself off of it slowly though. I've been drinking more and more water, and I find myself not wanting diet soda as much.
I started drinking Diet 7-UP when I decided to lose weight. I was a HUGE Pepsi drinker, several cans a day, and never drank any water. Well, since I switched to Diet, I've been drinking some water too. Maybe eventually diet soda will be just a treat, but for now, I'm satisfied with drinking that and adding a little water to my diet.
If its caffiene you're looking for, or even something sweet try making iced coffee. I love it in the summer time. All you gotta do is make coffee and chill it over ice or in the fridge. And its contains much less calories than sodas. Not sure if it makes you bloat though
I am so happy that you posted this! I HAVE to stop drinking this poison, and all the same, I absolutely HAVE to cut artificial sweeteners out of my diet. I'm almost (yes, in fact, I am ) too embarrassed to even post how many forms of/amounts of artificial sweetener I consumer a day. It's gotten out of control. Between gum, "sugar free syrup" in my coffee(s), and diet soda, I have every reason to believe that I am causing my body and mind a lot of harm.
I have to stop. I hope this tread is still active tomorrow night, because really, I have to start tomorrow. I can't keep ingesting this crap. I don't want to derail your original post, but I'd love to know if anyone else here had ever had and broken an excessive (and I mean EXCESSIVE) artificial sweetener addiction?
I wonder what my oatmeal will taste like in the morning without 7 packs of poison in it?
i'd dare anyone to wrestle my diet dew outta my hands! I use to be a coke hound...cola
! I could go through a 2 Litre a day...hmm maybe that is how i got up to 315 lbs, ya think?? . Switched to dt dew and never looked back. Yes mom, i still drink water, and only one 20 oz a day ( i nurse it for hours). But i work nites and the caffeine is a must! i've lost 80 lbs so it must not be as Toxic as some claim. Not any more serious than stroking out, or losing a limb from diabetes. Now i must crawl back into my hole, because i am sure that the gamma rays from the computer screen just gave me a brain tumor!
I drank diet pepsi when i was skinny, I drank it when I was gaining AND losing weight. Diet pepsi didn't give me my belly, eating too many calories and sitting on my butt all day did that. Don't blame the pepsi, blame the pepsi drinker!
Aspartame is the chemical in diet soda, I wouldn't drink it. Try carbonated fruit juice, or water. =)
I guess i am lucky as i don't really care for soda, whether it's diet (yuck i can't stand artificial sweeteners, would rather not eat any sweets than eat that) and i find regular soda is way to sweet for me. I do occasionally have those natural sodas like Hansen's maybe try those?
