I normally don't drink any soda when I am dieting but I was woundering If diet soda is axually ok 2 drink while trying to loose weight. I feel guilty after I drink it even though it has no calories. Does it make you gain water weight? Theres only 40 Mg but I always feel bloated afterwards. I know it's Kind of a weard question!LOL

You feel bloated because of the carbonation, not the sodium. I can't say whether it makes you gain water weight or not, although anything is possible.

umm, well, diet soda contains an ingredient that surrounds the fat cells in your body and prevents your body from burning them so essentially diet soda prevents fat loss. definitely not the best choice of drink.

and if you feel guilty, why not just drink regular water? (:

That's nonsense.

If that were really the case, no one who drank diet coke would ever lose weight. And we know that's not true.

it's not nonsense, it's proven fact. look it up if you want.

additionally, the sweetener turns to formaldahyde in your body. it's toxic. not so great eh.

ewwxroflzz, many foods transiently turn into potentially toxic substances, even organically grown foods such as tomatoes (a member of the deadly nightshade family).  If nature did not take this into account, how would we have survived.

As for your statement of "an ingredient that surrounds the fat cells", I notice that you didn't mention it's name.

I see too many people who take a grain of truth and try to make it into a rice field.

There is no truth to the comments made by ewwxroflzz. The reasons why they say that diet soda causes weight gain is two-fold: 1. Because the individual is consuming a "diet" drink, they could overcompensate this with more food later on. This has been studied with other "diet" products too and each time, the participants who consumed the "diet" product, either ate more of those products and thus ate more calories, or they consumed more later on in the day. 2. Some research suggests that the artificial sweeteners contained in the diet sodas increase appetite although this is not that well established. The bloating you are feeling is not due to Mg (Sodium is what contributes to bloating and water retention and diet sodas have very low amounts of this mineral), but due to carbonation as another member mentioned.
I am a diet soda fanatic! I especially love coke zero. I cant give that up.
I love drinking diet soda, and I actually feel pretty good about drinking it as a treat. I guess everyone here has caught on to the innacuracies of ewwxroflzz but I'll say it too. Theres no truth to that. If you enjoy some Diet soda now and then, drink up! If not, have some refreshing h20! :)
in response to the people saying the info on aspartame is false.. you can look it up for yourself and make your own decision. as for myself, i'd rather refrain from putting artificial ANYTHING in my body and just stick to good old water.

Unless you grow your own produce, grow your own grains, and never eat or drink anything else, I can assure you that you put plenty of artificial stuff in your body.

The aspartame info you stated is false at worst, or unproven at best.

okay, yeah, i'm sure i eat SOME artificial stuff. but isn't that what "organic means"..? no artificial things added? i eat organic whenever possible.

also, there's no solid proof that aspartame does NOT do any of those things either, personally i'd rather err on the side of too careful. aside from that, you can't argue with the fact that water is just plain better.

Organic is nothing short of a scheme designed to pillage peoples' wallets.

Sometimes artificial is safer than natural. Some organic pesticides have been shown to be far more toxic than the artificial ones we've created in a lab.

Aside from that, we created life saving medicines in labs. Are you saying you wouldn't take a drug that could save your life because it's not organic?

Didn't think so.

lol, that's obviously not true. organic products have no pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage, and aren't genetically modified. also, "organic" meat products are from animals that weren't fed growth hormones or antibiotics.

edit: sorry, forgot about the last part. obviously i would take it because it's a life or death situation.. but choosing between water and diet soda is not (: so that's irrelevant.

nothing in there really proves that organic food is bad

if pesticide is used on organic products, it's only organic pesticide(oil or sulfur). the only reason they might contain some pesticide is if they were grown in a field that had used it in the past ten years (products are legally labeled organic if grown in a fiel that was pesticide-free for 3 yrs)

Exactly.

Just like nothing really proves that artificial stuff is bad. Cool

Google aspartame and sucralose (splenda) and decide for yourself.  Toxicity aside, I personally believe that artificial sweeteners are addictive and in large amounts tend to make people crave a lot more junky carbs and sweets.  Many will disagree, but that was my experience.  Most of the people I know who have drunk a lot of Diet Soda have only GAINED weight.

You might want to also google the word "excitotoxin".  It's kinda scary...

Except there are thousands of years of history of people eating real, natural foods we can look at to see their effects on health.  The chemicals have only been around for a couple of decades at most.  The long-term effects are unknown.  Who wants to be a guinea pig and find out at age 50 that the palsy you can't get rid of was caused by the Diet crap you drank at 20 or 30?  Not me, thanks.

...I don't know.  I buy a case of the 12oz. caffeine free diet cokes every other week or so.  I probably have about 4 a week total.

I've lost 39 pounds so far.  I also eat yogurt that contains aspartame (dannon light and fit) and I'm sure I consume other products that contain that as well.  (I eat the yogurt once, sometimes twice a day.)  I am still able to lose weight.

Now...as far as it being good for you?  I highly doubt it, I'm just letting you know, yes, I lost weight and was still able to drink diet soda.

They have been using introduced chemicals/compounds in farming for in excess of a hundred years ... Just because they occur naturally somewhere else (i.e. lye or arsenic) does not make them different than something created in the lab. Furthermore, if what we have introduced into food production was as harmful as some would believe why is it life expectancy has risen dramatically over the last century? Medical and sanitation advances aside, the biggest common factor is the food we eat.

And btw, raw human/animal waste (sewage) was used for hundreds of years as a fertilizer ...
