Does dieting affect your menstrual cycle?

Since I have been dieting, my cycle has almost stopped. Is this normal?

If your periods have stopped it's a sign that your body is either under stress or pregnant.  If there's any chance you could be pregnant do a test.  If not, check you're getting plenty of iron-rich and vitamin-c rich foods because a light blood-flow can mean you're slightly anaemic.... pretty common when people cut their calories and don't get the right nutrition.

And then check that you're eating enough..... 1400-1500 a day if you're between 140 and 200lbs.  More if you're heavier, very young or very active.  1200 is the bare minimum if you're already quite light, middle aged or really sedentary.  Sub 1200 and you're in the danger zone for health problems.   A fat-free diet can affect menstruation... so keep in things like olive oils.  Finally.... are you over-exercising?   Excessive strenuous activity can cause periods to stop.

If none of the above applies then do go to see your doctor.

I agree, unless there is a natural explanation for it, e.g. pregnancy or the menopause, this can be a warning sign.

Review your diet - make sure you are getting enough calories a day and are getting the right nutrients. Smile

I have noticed that mine has also gotten a lot lighter as well as the cramps. I have heard that this is normal among female athletes and where I am not an athlete the amount of exercise I do compared to the couch sitting I was doing is about my version of being an athlete. ha ha ha

I thinks it's absolutely the best! If I would have known this would happen I would have started exercising regularly at puberty. If it you actually stop getting a period then you should probably consult a doctor, but that's just my thoughts.

: )

Yes, it is normal to have a period stop or lighten during changes to your health habits...exercise is especially key-it can stop your period completely. I lost mine once for 3 months. Your  body will adjust and get back to a normal cycle. If you haven't gotten back to some sort of regularity after 3 or 4 months, talk to your doctor!
