dieting while pregnant

Is it safe to diet while pregnant. Iam 300 pounds and would like to at least maintain weight or maybe lose a few pounds, but not gain, Also I do not want to harm baby. Im eating about 2100 calories taking vitamins and eating a healthier choice of food. Does anyone have any advise.

Talk to your doctor, s/he should know better than anyone else.

no, dont diet while your pregnant. you maybe lacking in some nutrients &minerals needed for your baby. instead just eat SUPER healthy.

DO NOT DIET. wait till you have the baby

The best rule of thumb I was given while pregnant was this:

Eat for ONE

Drink for TWO


As always check with your doctor, she will advise you on the path that makes sense for you.

Thank you, its just so hard when your already heavy. I asked my doctor and he said to eat 300 more calories, but Ive been really unhealthy and am really trying to change that so not really sure how many calories that is. Calorie plus added all my information and said to lose it 1750 so I just added 300 to that. You think that is about right

 You should definitely talk to your doctor and even see a registered dietitian. Most women that are already overweight do not need to gain as much weight as thinner women, so losing weight might be out of the picture for now but you can eat right, which is good for everybody. Good luck with your baby!! 

You should ask your OB or midwife.  I do not think you should try to lose weight right now.  Generally they advise little or no weight gain at your weight as long as you are meeting your nutritional requirements, making healthy food and activity choices, and your baby is developing normally. 
many years ago when I had my first child (she's 23 now), I did Weight Watchers..  and it was great because they had recommendations for pregnancy and then after when I breast fed...  okay'd through the Doc..  and all went well.  Weight Watchers is a great program.  Don't know if they still have the adjustments and recommendations for pregnant and/or nursing women. If they do, I would recommend it.
Everyone is right about conferring with your doctor first...but I had Gestational Diabetes while I was pregnant, and they put me on a 2100 calorie a day diet, and I did not gain any weight after that.  I initially put on 10 pds. before I was diagnosed, and then maintained month 3-9.  My baby was fine and I fit back into my clothes after she was born.
Given the high-stakes here, I would definitely see your doctor and then ask for a referral to a dietician.

I think that is exactly the idea.  Find out if your ob/gyn can give you a referral (If you need one for insurance purposes) to see a dietician to confirm the numbers but it does make sense from what your doctor told you on adding 300 calories. 

I was 175lbs (ish) when I got pregnant with my second (50lbs overweight) and my ob told me to try to only gain 20lbs.....I started eating a ton more then normal and the first 22 weeks I lost about 25lbs and the ob was getting concerned then finaly at the last part I only gained 10 back. My daughter was healthy but a little on the small side (my first was 8.1lbs and my second was only 6.14lbs) and I had alot of amniotic fluid.....I would deffinatly check with your dr and make sure you know exactly what you are needing ....a vitamin defficency during pregnancy can cause serious damage to the baby and you!!!

That's nice to hear. I'm not entirely trusting of doctors' advice -- My doctor for my first child was alarmed at my weight gain, and stopped it at 50 lbs. (I know, that's a lot!). My second doctor told me that was silly, eat what healthy foods I want, and gain what will. I gained 70 and was on bed rest with high blood pressure for the last two weeks of my pregnancy. It was incredibly difficult to lose the second time, and now I'm pregnant again, and forty pounds overweight. I have a new doctor, and I'm afraid to ask. I'm drinking water, counting my calories, taking great vitamins, and eating food packed with fiber and nutrition. I'm eating about 2000 - 2500 calories a day and exercising with a goal to maintain my weight. Some doctors are good, and recognize the power that food has over health, and other doctors actually discount diet as a factor in health! So IMHO, find a doctor that recognizes the importance of nutrition. 

It sounds to me like you have the right idea and are already doing great!  Still, I would talk with new doc and tell him your concerns.  I just really made smart choices, and still got to eat what I wanted for the most part.  I would have whatever as the main course, and ask for steamed veggies instead of a loaded baked potato...you do not want to end up with GD (overweight women have a higher risk) and like you, I was about 40 pds. overweight.  It was my third child, too, never had it with the others.  I was miserable, felt like I was dying, and was anmeic too!  Congratulations on your pregnancy!  What a blessing babies are!  Smile
Thank you all for the advise, its all very helpful. I talked to my doctor and he said 2100 is just fine. So I'm hoping I can maintain :) Thank you all again

 I am so glad someone else has the came problem as me! I was feeling really alone. I'm 29 weeks and got put on bedrest for pre-eclampsia and I started at 192 lbs and now I'm up to 231! I eat less than 2,000 calories a day and drink almost 5 liters a day but the weight still packs on. I've had a doctor tell me not to worry about it but thios recent one actually called me a liar and said theres no way I'm  eating healthy if I'm gaining weight like this. And on bedrest I dunno what else I can do. No one will give me any suggestions. I think it's extremely important to find a doctor that supports you and tried their best to help you physically as well as emotionally in a problem pregnancy.
