Is dieting supposed to make me pissy?

Quote  |  Reply

My mom said, "You know Nora, ever since you started dieting you've been in a really bad mood all the time." Is this 'normal'?? She thinks that I'm not getting the right nutrition, but I am! And I also take vitamins everyday. Does anyone else feel grouchy or irritable a lot?

Granted, sometimes when I don't eat a lot carbs, like when I try to limit my bread/rice/whatever intake I get pissy and feel very low energy, but even when this isn't the case I'm still pissy. And she's right, you know, I have been in a bad mood lately.

So am I being 'b*tchy' because of my diet or because it's just who I am? lol

I hope to god it is not who I am. I am in the same boat. I feel like I yell a lot more than I use to. I get frustrated easily and some days I don't want to see anyone. I seem to take more time for myself once my husband gets home than I use too. If you find a cure please let me know. I would love to be my old self again but without the weight of course.

For me, I always get bitchy when I'm hungry (doesn't matter if I'm dieting or not).

People close to me have learned not to take things personally until after I've eaten.  If I'm being irrational for any reason, the first thing my hubby asks is "when is the last time you ate something"

If you are pissy ALL the time, then I would think that maybe you aren't eating enough?  How many calories do you eat in a day?

I find myself getting really irritable with my parents when they are trying to decide what to eat for dinner. I feel bad but i just want them to make healthier choices, so when my mom goes, "would you guys like to order out tonight?" and my dad goes, "Yeah chinese food!" I end up getting really angry that nobody understands how bad that is for you. And then my mom tells me "I'm being ridiculous" with the rules and restrictions but I'm the only one in my family in a healthy weight range and I just wish everyone could make better decisions. Also I get angry when someone suggests going out for ice cream and then makes me feel guilty for not wanting to go, as if me opting out of an ice cream trip means I don't want to hang out with my dad. I also get pissy when I'm hungry in general. Blehhh dieting

Yeah, I went thru a few weeks where I was miserable....I felt like I lost my best friend (chocolate, candy, ice cream, fries).  I finally got a hold on myself and moved on.  But yes, I can relate.

Sometimes I can get really pissy and I feel sorry for the people in my life that have to deal with me and my pissy skinny ass!  Haa ha haaaa!!!!

if you've cut back on sweets, it could be sugar withdrawal.

Yeah, it's just that... I get upset over everythinggggggg, not just food related stuff. And being pissy all the time is exhausting, let me tell ya! I've always hada bit of a temper, but geez, it's getting ridiculous!

I aim to eat 1400 a day, but I know I always eat a little over what I am for. I average around 1600-1700 a day, and have for the past few weeks. I don't if it's necessarily my diet, or the fact that I don't eat enough. I started taking an anti-depressant like two months ago, maybe it's that. *sigh* I'm just tired of always being in a bad mood :-/

And I know I won't be in a good mood until I get the hell out of Charlotte and go on vacation in July. But still, I shouldn't have to be on vacation just to be happy, ya know?

Hi Nefertiti,

Its definitely possible your moodiness- as well as everyone else who expressed being moody, is caused by your dieting. When you restrict your diet you are reprograming your mind (horomones, chemicals) and body to react differently to food and use food more sparingly. As usually dieting means eating less, for some yes, eating more. But no matter what when you are dieting you are also doing it for personal reasons, when people eat foods that are "forbidden to you" around you this may also increase your irritability.

I like to try and never give myself forbidden foods while trying to lose weight, I know it sounds strange to hear a person loosing weight eating a candy bar or some ice cream here and there, but if you made it forbidden and therefore a desire, you will more than likely over induldge when you slip and have a sweet.

There was actually a series on TLC about weightloss that said making foods forbidden will ulitmately ruin your attempts.

Anyways back to the mood, yeah its all connected, and not to bring it up, but more so when we are menstruating, why, our bodies use more calories and our hormones go even more out of wack, also we want to eat more, we gain water weight, and if we accidently weigh ourselves while mensurating, ANY woman will probably become incredibly pissy as water gain during menstration can be up to or even more than 10 pounds!

I am also taking an antidepressent, and some of the mood altering that antidepressants cause are found in some perscription weight loss medicines. My only problem I see, is that when I first started taking my anti depressant I was not ever hungry- not irritable- but I gained about 10 pounds from it (well I am assuming from it) but I am working to balance the weight loss with the help of not being INSANE all of the time- it really doesn' t work when you are home with your 9 month old twins all day- Insanity causes many more problems :)

Aren't women moody regardless of diets, TOTM, hunger etc....?

;)

Yeah, you could say that. But in all honesty I know more men that suffer from PMS than I do women, its like a male "time of the month" that it insanely more irritating than any womans PMS!!!

mammamoosh>> lol.... For me it is DABL

Day After Boro Lost in the English Premiership.... Starts at 445pm on a Saturday and finishes around 2pm on a Sunday :)

Mammamoosh-

I definitely agree with you, and the TLC series, about the likelihood of a binge increasing when you make certain foods "off limits". After all, as soon as we know we can't have something, doesn't that make us want it even more?? It does for me, most definitely! I try to have a little something-something every day.. like last night I had some calories left over so I had two glasses of skim milk and a square of Ghiradelli dark chocolate. Mmmmm, a good way to end the day : ] I also think that it's just the dieting; I mean, for your body to shrink is an incredible feat, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was mentally very stressful. I mean, I'm sure it's stressful on my body, even though I'm doing it the 'healthy' way, it's still pretty incredible if you think about it.

Also, with the antidepressant I'm on, it also suppresses my appetite. Actually, sometimes I actually have to remind myself or make myself eat, otherwise I'll just go forever without eating and I'll get all crazy when my blood sugar drops! Luckily, loss of appetite is a side effect of my medicine (Welbutrin) -yeah that's a pretty sweet side effect, huh?? :D

Does your local chinese place have steamed options? All of our chinese joints have Steamed chicken or shrimp with broccoli/mixed vegetables. No sauce, no added fat. Give that a look next time you get a Chinese menu from wherever your family orders.

Also, if there's a cold stone ice cream place around you, they have a sugar free non fat sweet cream ice cream that's delicious and not so bad. Look it up, Cold Stone Sinless Sans Fat Sweet Cream. It's so good! 140 calories for a small, no fat, sucralose not aspartame. Chock full of calcium too. Sorry I just had to recommend that. :D

I always get the steamed shrimp with broccoli now and its amazing. I mean you can really taste everything without all the grease and sauce smothering it. My parents tell me I am pissy all the time hahaha. "I wish you would just start eating real food again you were a lot less pissy then!". When I am hungry I want to eat and I get moody whether I am watching what I am eating or not, thats just how I've always been. I think its easier for them to blame it on the diet, because I think most parents don't think you need to be on one or hate to admit you do. Then you have parents like mine that make no sense, my dad tries to tempt me with fries for 10 minutes and then when I take a SMALL bite of my sisters dessert he yells at me "What the hell are you doing?! You are on a diet and weigh everything you eat then go and mess it up by having sugar!". Lol, you see what I have to live with! J/k hahaha. Sorry I went off topic there. Maybe I am just moody, I never really thought of it that way Undecided

It definitely sounds like you're eating enough.  Maybe you're having withdrawal from the foods you normally eat?  I've read in lots of different places that there are additives placed in our food that make us crave them & become addicted to them.  So since you're trying to eat healthy, you could be essentially trying to break an addiction & everyone knows thats one of the hardest things to do!

Good luck!

Carbs....  Hmmm.... Maybe having a chat with your doctor about how the lack of carbs is affecting you.  I'm thinking that maybe you should have your blood sugar levels checked to make sure everything is ok.

Your probably just tired, and being tired can make you pissy

I've been crazy pissy since I've started taking my diet seriously - what the heck!

This is so so true. I feel like I'm always tired, boo :-/

Oh and PEZZLE, yes the place near my house has steamed Chinese food options! Although, my mom said the sauce they use is like a thicker version of soy sauce, so although I'm sure it's chock full of sodium, it's pretty low cal. Plus, DAMN it tastes good! Oh and I always get the bean curd (tofu) with steamed veggies (err, plus the sauce) and white rice, and holy crap! How can white rice have so many calories?!?! It's like 300-400 calories per cup, wtf?

Do you think there's a huge difference between what I get, with the sauce, versus just straight up steamed?
