Hey! A question for those with Thyroid issues:
I have a high level of thyroid antibodies but normal TSH levels, and after seeing an endocrinologist, he told me that my thyroid is in the process of self destructing and its too early to start any hormone treatment. I am 19 , 5'6, 167lbs and have high cholesterol. I was wondering if anyone with hypothyroidism had any tips on how to lower cholestrol and loose weight while working against a slower metabolism? Or any tips on vitamins to start taking? I would really appreciate it!
I don't have any specific tips but one.
I would recommend seeing a doctorin oriental medicine. While your endocrinologist may have pointed out the problem, doctors in oriental medicine can solve it. They work with a curing technique that has been defined and perfected over thousands of years. Also, they use a lot of vitamins and herbs to support your body that really work!
I used to also have thyroid problems, and after seeing a specialist in Eastern Medicine, it's not really much of a problem any more! It requires some patience, but in the end it's worth it. :)
Hope this helps.
I have an enlarged thyroid with multiple nodules resulting in hypothyroidism. I take levothyroxin daily. This solved my nerve problems but not my weight problem. My doctor does labs and said my thyroid level is right where he wants it now. I thought my metabolism would return to normal and the weight would come off naturally, NOT. If anyone knows how to increase the metabolism I would like to hear it. I try to keep calories at 1200 or less and walk a mile a day. This results in about 1 lb weight loss a week. Peg
I just googled diets for hypothyroidism and found these results at the Mayo Clinic site:
Too much dietary fiber can impair the absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone. Certain foods, supplements and medications can have the same effect, including:
- Walnuts
- Soybean flour
- Cottonseed meal
- Iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron
- Calcium supplements
- Antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium
- Some ulcer medications, such as sucralfate
- Some cholesterol-lowering drugs, such as cholestyramine and colestipol
To avoid potential interactions, avoid these products or use them several hours before or after you take your thyroid medication.

To speed up your metabolism you need to eat every 2-3 hours. eatting large meals 3 times a day slows it down because your body goes into starvation mode. When u eat every 2-3 hours it helps speed it up because your body doesnt have time to realize that it is hungry so it doesnt go into starvation mode. Make sure that when you do eat frequently that you are eatting healthy things that add up to be able 300 calories. I suggest alot of fruit, veggies and egg whites. Try that and in a little while your bodies metabolism should speed up. Good luck!
Thanks so much for the advice! I will definitely try natural medicines, as well as eating smaller meals more often.
