Some diets I need opinions on...

Quote  |  Reply

Hey there everybody!

My name is Jayden, and I am new to this website. For awhile now, I have been browsing google to find a few diets I could try, but I don't know if they are teen safe, plus, I need opinions on them, and some questions answered.

I am a 13 year old girl, I weight 200lbs. My height is almost 5'4 (I'm 5'3.7) and my bone structure is large.

I am on the Herbal Magic program, and that’s what they told me at least.I have been on the program for a few weeks now, and I should have supposedly lost around 6 pounds! but I've only lost 2! I've been working my butt off to lose the weight, and I’m so discouraged. Seeing my weight and that I’m not make any progress really upsets me, and I've cried a lot. I know, crying is not the solution, but what can I do? It's so frustrating, and it makes me angry.

Alright, enough with that, here are the diets:

The first one is a diet, I’m not sure if it's pills (it says its not), so it must be a food and exercise guide. I’m not sure. But it says you can loose 20lbs in 10 days.

I know what your thinking 'that’s crazy!' Heck yeah it is! But it sure is convincing. The one thing I’m worried about with this diet though is that I'll gain it all back! I'm not too worried about losing muscle mass, because quiet frankly, I don't like the look of muscles on females, but some people have told me it can harm my body.

Second, This one has been seen on oprah, CNN, Rachel ray, everywhere! They are diet pills, and it says I can lose 25lbs in 2 weeks. Same worries.

Third, It's the Acai Berry and Colon Cleanse. People have told me that its a fraud and all that, but the pictures man, the pictures! They are so convincing.  have found numerous diet blogs on this, and I need opinions.

Thank you!

Imagine there's a scale on the floor.  On the scale is some bone, some muscle, some water, some fat, etc.   Now imagine your goal.   If your goal is simply numbers only, then sure you can erase some water, some muscle, some lean tissue, and some fat.  That's how you'd get 20 pounds in 10 days or 25 pounds in an hour or whatever else the fad diets promise.

I guarantee you that you will not, and simply cannot, lose 20 pounds of fat in 10 days or two weeks or anything even close to it.   What will happen is water loss, muscle loss, some fat loss, and other things to compensate from whatever you are thinking of doing to your body.  And you will gain it back and more once you normalize whatever these "diets" say to do.   If you don't normalize and stick with these diets, you may end up in the hospital or worse after a while.   Read the fine print and I guarantee they will not accept responsibility for any medical issues you experience, and also say not to follow the diet longer than their prescribed period of time.

I realize it sucks, but the reality in weight loss is it needs to be slow and steady.  You'd be amazed how you feel during the time you are slowly making progress.  Yeah everyone would like to lose a bunch of weight real fast, but that's not healthy and its not realistic.   Science has proven the body can only metabolize up to two pounds of actual fat a week.   Anything more and you are losing something other than fat, such as water or muscle.

You've come to the right site, because here you can log what you eat and set a realistic goal for yourself.  At 13, you do NOT need to be severely restricting your calories or trying to fool your body by gimmicks.  It's going to make your situation a lot worse very fast.

I strongly recommend searching threads here on the forums about advice.  The main idea is to stick to healthy foods, a lot of fruits and vegetables, and set a realistic calorie deficit along with some exercise.  You can still eat a lot of food;  you simply avoid the ones that have empty calories.   Time goes by very quickly and the progress you make will be real progress, not some quick fix that is going to catch up to you faster than you think.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing :)

I wouldn't trust these diets at all. You're young and need to focus on a lifestyle adjustment rather than a diet. I'm pretty young myself (19) and I lost 20 pounds in 7th grade following weight watchers point system, and gained it back by 8th. I wanted to join track, but was shy and never did, which I really regret that. Now, just one year out of high school, I run everyday and am eating healthy foods, and weight has come off with it. I would suggest you talk with your parents about making more healthy decisions, maybe you and them could go to the gym together, I see moms and young daughters go together all the time at mine. Also, maybe look into joining a sport next school year. If you aren’t interested in any, try some over the summer and maybe you’ll find one you enjoy. Swimming and biking are great summer exercises! I would hate to see you get caught up in all the media crash diet garbage at such a young age. Instead of googling diet programs, try looking up how to eat a healthy and balanced diet.

First Welcome to c-c.
Second as you are 13 please do not start on the diet pills.  Don't waste your money on cleases and Acai berry.  You can spend that money on healthy food choices.
A friend of mine lost 70 lbs on herbal magic, it cost her $3000.  That is $40 per pound.
Third at c-c we don't believe in diets so much.  A healthy lifestyle is what you want to achieve.

Calculator and calorie information for Teens You need to fill out this and find your caloric needs for each day.

At 16 your health shoud come first.  Your body needs nutrition to grow and mature and fad dieting won't help.  If you eat around 2000 calories per day, every day of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, veggies and healthy fats and the occasional junk food, it may take some time, but the fat stores will release once they understand your new way of feeding it.

In my profile is a list of great foods to start with.

Please enjoy your food choices and leave the fad diets alone.

These ladies have already said it best.

But you might also consider adding walking every day as part of your routine,  It does not have to be a lot.  30 minutes every day will go a long way to helping you feel better and help create that calorie deficit already mentioned.  You might find you really enjoy it!  I know i do :)  I have lost 26 lbs so far just walking and eating right.  My boss lost 80!

The added bonus of just eating correctly and losing the weight naturally (on top of it being free, and safe) is the lessons you learn about your body, food and nutrition will last you the rest of your life. This is what stops you putting it back on after, if you went on diet pills even if you lost some of the weight you won't keep it off unfortunately. If you stick around here and read the success stories you'll see they tried all these things unsuccessfuly before finding counting calories and exercising works.

There are only really three secrets to successful weight-control

  1. Eat good/real food
  2. Control the portion-sizes
  3. Move around more

Anything else that people try to sell you or fob you off with is probably not going to work.  All of the extreme diets you mentioned are absolutely not suitable for children, and they won't do adults any good either.

Talk to your parents and maybe your doctor about how to control your weight safely and sensibly.  Your parents are responsible for the food coming into the house so 'eat good/real food' is largely down to them to provide for you.  If you need help understanding what a healthy diet looks like this site is really good with advice.... http://www.eatwell.gov.uk/   Learning to cook is  good life-skill... if you can prepare and cook simple, healthy meals you're much less likely to have a weight-problem in the future than someone that relies on frozen pizzas and other ready-made foods.  It's also a good way to economise.

Controlling portion-sizes instantly becomes easier when you eat better food.  Vegetables, for example, should form the bulk of your diet and they are filling but low in calories.  People who eat lots of vegetables tend to be quite slim.  Other healthy foods..... lean meat, wholegrain foods, fish, beans, fruit, eggs, nuts.... are also filling in slightly smaller amounts, you'll find.

Moving around more is something you can do without any intervention from anyone else.  Whether it's walking, jogging, dancing or getting a bicycle and travelling around that way, aim to get at least an hour of activity each day.

So do forget the fad diets.  They always look attractive... that's 'marketing'.  And they know how desperate people are to lose weight so they play on people's hopes and fears.  It's a nasty trade so don't be tempted to be their next victim.

Good luck

I will make this short.

1. Be 100% motivated to reach your goal.

2. Eat 6 smaller meals instead of three main ones a day. (Drink lots of water).

3. Keep yourself occupied mentally and physically, to forget your hunger.

4. Lay of sugar.

5. And ofcourse exercise is a must.

The www is filled with tousand suggestions for how to lose weight, I believe that there is logic in losing weight. You will know when you are eating the wrong foods (if you are in doubt, then it is the wrong food). You probably think these five points are very obvious, that might be but they work.

Good luck

I purchased the Acai and Colon Cleanse.  I was then automatically signed up for several other programs.  I am trying to cancel the Acai Advanced but no one answers the telephone.  I received a $149 bill on my credit card for my next shipment which I canceled.  I am disputing all.  In total, it resulted in 6 separate charges totaling $186 in less than two weeks.  Be careful.  I got the trial bottles and they all have senna, the active ingredient in popular laxatives plus guarana.  Lots of money for lousy ingredients.

One important thing to remember...

If something sounds too good to be true... it probably is. In other words do what everyone else has said and concentrate on healthy eating and exercise and changing your lifestyle, not gimmicky fad diets or pills that are only going to harm you in the long run.

sweetie, those are not diets... they are jokes.  your "diet" is what you eat everyday like you go to the zoo & they say this animals "diet" consists of....as in what they eat.  I just want to tell you that you know how you got here & you know what you have been eating, I know it seems hopeless right now but don't raid the cupboard & change 2-3 of your 5-6 small meals to about 4-6 cup salads with tuna or chicken on top & vinegar + 1 tsp  light ranch (not Kraft though) & not iceberg lettuce either... like mixed greens or the greener the better.

Anyway you know what you have been doing wrong & it has not been having a lack of these products or jokes in your life.  It is what you do & don't put in your mouth.  now straighten up LOL just teasing, you will do great just follow directions.   Smile

P.S. in order to lose weight drink about 1 gallon of water per day +vitamin... or will not happen & you know what not to drink.

Good luck to you Tjlo

It sounds convincing to you because you are a 13 year old child and your judgement is not fully developed.  I hope you'll take the advice you've been given here and don't fall for scams.
