What is the difference between BMI and body fat percentage?

My body fat percentage is in the low 40s. I don't know my BMI. About how long will it take to safely lower these and lose about 80 pounds?. I just joined a gym and weight loss plan.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of weight in relation to height. It is a way to categorize someone as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. (Find your BMI at the Tools tab and compare it to the BMI chart.) Body fat percentage is the weight of fat only divided by total weight. Body fat standards for women vary with age; however, a body fat percent of 40 is always high. It is difficult to say how long it will take to reduce your percent of body fat, but realize that percent body fat is a function of the other components of your weight, and so fat will be relatively lower if your muscle mass is high. Lose weight slowly while building muscle to favorably change your ratio. To lose 80 pounds, plan on about 1½ years.
