different types of fat on salads

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone!  My dietician wants me to put some type of fat on my salads - thing is, I have never liked salad dressing and have never eaten it until my dietician told me to.  It's the taste of dressing I just don't like and how it feels on my tongue - regardless of what type it is.

So does anyone have any idea of what other fats I could put on the salad?  I also don't do cheese, and am allergic to tree nuts (but not peanuts!)  But putting a handful of peanuts on top of vegetables seems a bit off - I'd do it, but it doesn't seem natural.

Sunflower seeds and avocados are my suggestions :) Both really yummy fat!

Edit: I thought of another one...hard boiled eggs have healthy fat

To go with lafoutloud's seed suggestion, you could try to add some pumpkin seeds or sesame seeds, too.

You could also add a higher-fat yogurt, but that probably goes along with the texture thing that you dislike.

Olives are another good addition to salads.  Just watch the sodium!

You could also add a high-fat bean - maybe some roasted soybeans or chickpeas?  Or edamame!

Lastly, you could always turn to meat - salads with fish like raw/cooked salmon (I like my sardine salads!) are high in omega-3s, and if you really had to, maybe some chicken or beef chunks/slices that aren't too lean, if you're not concerned about your levels of saturated fat.

Hope that helped!

- Fats to add to your salad:

*Hard Boiled Eggs (Whole)

*Olives & Olive Oil

*Flaxseeds & Flaxseed Oil

*Hempseeds & Hempseed Oil

*Nuts of All Types

*Avocado

*Fatty Fish (Salmon, Mackerel, Tuna, Sable Fish, Escolar, Eel, Sardines & Anchovies)

*Olive Tapenade/Sun-Dried Tomato Tapenade

*Pumpkin & Sunflower Seeds

*Grass-Fed/Finished Meats, Cheese, Butter & Dairy

~My favorite salad EVER is a Salad Nicoise: full of healthy fats!!!! The ingredients include: Butter Lettuce, Olives, Tuna, Hard Boiled Eggs, Green Beans, Bell Peppers, Artichoke Hearts, Capers, Red Onions & Tomatoes (Dressing = white wine vinegar, olive oil, dijon mustard & salt/pepper)

spinach salad with walnuts or almonds with strawberries and a rasberry walnut or balsamic dressing (:

Not to really bash anybody or anything, but can you guys please read the OP's detailed requests before posting? =.=

If dressing, nuts and cheese are out, then avocado is likely your best bet.  Tuna would also work.
