Why does my digital scale produce different numbers?

My digital scale reads different numbers depending on where I stand in the room. I know that our floors a uneven, so I try to find the most level spot to weigh myself. Then I do it again to make sure and sometimes the number is different. Then I try it in other spots that look more level and it's different again. The range can be up to 5 lbs! I just got this scale 6 weeks ago, so I don't think it could be the batteries dying so fast, but I don't know. What do you think?
Answer
Comparison reviews show the accuracy of digital scales just isn't that great. But you can improve the accuracy by placing the scale on a firm floor or plank, and once it’s set, do not move the scale! Never place an item on the scale unless it is to be weighed, and if the scale is not in use for a long time, remove the batteries. It is also a good idea to check the calibration on a digital scale at least once a year. The best scales are the weight-balanced scales like you see at the doctor's office. If you weigh yourself two times in a row, then log the average of the two weights and move on.
