when dining in the middle of nowhere..
i'm staying at my mom's boyfriend's house for the weekend, and there is absolutely no food here.. so we have to go out to eat for lunch AND dinner -_-
his house is actually in the middle of nowhere, where all there is is little family-owned diners and stuff. what kind of things should i avoid ordering? do little diners let you make any special requests? help!
LOL...It will be okay I promise. Last weekend I ate movie theater popcorn (gasp) and the next day went out to eat and I didn't choose anything healthy either. But when I went to weight myself I still lost 3 lbs for the week. You just need to be smart about how much you are eating. Like you could get something that isn't relatively healthy but only eat HALF of it, that's what I did. Or if you don't wanna do that go for a salad with grilled chicken and get dressing on the side. This one day won't kill you, and sometimes its nice to just have a treat.
Good Luck!
You can ask if they'll make egg-white omlettes with veggies. Those are always delicious and filling!
If they can't do that, you can get a regular omlette with no cheese or meat...just veggies.
In my experience Family Owned = tons of butter, oil and lard. Even if you order the omelette without bacon, they might cook it with half a stick of butter.
I've found that little places that cook to order are more accomodating than places that have everything already prepared. I look for grilled fish or chicken and ask that they don't add any extra fat or butter. There is usually some kind of vegetable and salad offered. Stay away from mashed potatoes (get baked), things in cheese sauce, and fried things (UFOs - unidentified frying objects)
If they do sandwiches made to order, nice and fresh, then that's a pretty good choice - just no bacon, no cheese and condiments on the side. A turkey or roast beef sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat bread is not a bad choice. Stay away from tuna salad, chicken salad, and egg salad though, because of the mayo. You can almost always order tomato juice to supplement your vegetable servings.
For breakfast, you can usually get cereal in those little boxes. Most places have skim or low fat milk and bananas.
If you find yourself someplace that thinks the deep fryer and the grill are the only way to cook, then you'll just have to limit your portion sizes and do the best you can. You can order a burger without the bun and with extra tomato and lettuce.
If the house has a refrigerator and there is a convenience store of some kind, look for yogurt, cottage cheese, and the like for snacks. If there is any way you can buy a box of cereal and a half gallon of low fat milk, your snack needs are taken care of.
AVOID the bread basket, anything fried, butter, fatty cuts of steak, cheese of any type, cream based soups, mac & cheese (some of those country places consider them vegetables! What a joke! ha ha)
TRY AND GET large salads with olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, artichokes, peppers, etc on them along with grilled chicken or fish & make sure it is not grilled with a glaze of any sort on it (including butter)... or get a whole grain bread sandwich but make sure there is no mayo on it because... yea you know! ha ha... Avoid ham, bacon, sausage too & if you get eggs make sure they are not made with milk, butter, cheese or cream - Oh and those pre-made salads: forget about it! lol
Does your mom's boyfriend have a kitchen? You can cook, or at least make sandwiches. You don't have to go out for lunch and dinner every day.
