I just discovered okra!

I'm 42 years old and I love veggies. How did I get to be this old and never taste okra?  Anyway, I bought a bunch of different kinds of frozen veggies and I bought okra and I love it! Has anyone else made a great food discovery?

Can someone tell me what tastes like? How to cook it?

Deep fried is the traditional southern way to serve it.  Yummy, but not so healthy.

You can also simmer it with tomatoes (fresh or canned) and whatever spices you like.  Check out the canned okra/tomatoes for some ideas, but it's better fresh.

Oh man, I love okra!  I'm probably pretty odd in that I love to eat it raw.  It used to drive my mom nuts, because she would pick it (we have a pretty extensive garden) and then half of it would be gone by dinner time because I was munching on it all afternoon.  The consistancy isnt for everyone, its a bit slimy on the inside.  One of my favorite things to do with it though is to make a gumbo.  Mm-mmm, so good!

I second the yumminess of fried okra, thats how my mom always made it... sometimes fried in lard, which is really tasty, but soooooo bad for you.

ive never been a fan of fried okra but i love it pickled. could eat that all day with ranch dressing

I love fried and pickled okra, but generally I buy frozen sliced okra, nuke it for 2 minutes & then sprinkle it with some salt.

Whenever I stir fry veggies I add it too. It's best cooked quickly - you want bright green okra!

I thawed out the frozen okra and put it in salad.  The way the seeds pop when you eat it adds interest as well as flavor.

Ive never tried it either... I have seen them in the freezer before.

Maybe I'll pick up a bag of frozen okra next time ;)

I love pickled okra! It's the best.

I like smothered okra simmered with roma tomatoes, green chilis, garlic, Tony Chachere's & served over rice.
