"Cortisol is a corticosteroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex (in the adrenal gland). It is a vital hormone that is often referred to as the "stress hormone" as it is involved in the response to stress. It increases blood pressure, blood sugar levels and has an immunosuppressive action"
Anyway one effect of cortisol is to slow your metabolism in order to preserve your fat stores, whihc your body thinks it needs to fight whatever is stressing you.
The point being relax, eat a little more, take a few days off the gym and instead have a massage. Let your body re set itself and then perhaps it will start to cooperate with you. I found this very hard to do when i was told to because it didnt sound like it would work, but in fact a few days later i felt great and the weight started dropping when i got back tot the gym.
cassk,
i found myself in a similar situation this past summer. i had gained 25 lbs in january-june, and i became obsessed with losing it. i was exercising every day, eating an extremely lowfat diet, and depriving myself of all sorts of foods. my thoughts were constantly about how fat i looked and the foods i wanted to be eating. when i wasn't losing any weight, i went to a doctor who tested my thyroid and told me i should be able to lose weight just fine. after 3 months, i had only lost 2 pounds, and i just gave up altogether. i stopped obsessing over my body and ate the foods i wanted.
a couple months later, i realized i had been losing a bit of weight while not even "dieting." in november, i decided to come to calorie count, and have been consistently losing one pound a week. i attribute the weight loss to a change in my mind-set. i stopped obsessing over how my body looked, how i thought people were looking at me, how i was "depriving" myself of junk food and made the realization that weight loss comes slowly. my goal is now "health" instead of "getting rid of that nasty tummy and thigh fat," ha.
being able to look at weight loss in a realistic and almost non-emotional manner and switching to a positive mind-set made all the difference for me. hopefully this is something that can help you, too! good luck =)
