Doctor says try lowering wheat intake

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I have a small frame and this gut that just sticks out ..it comes and goes..

depends on my eating. I naturally having 3 kids am going to have a gut..i'm not concerned about that. i'm concerned that my IBS that i have had for years has caused some inner intestinal inflammation or soemthing. the bloating if you can call it that..( some days i can look 5 months pregnant)..no gas or discomfort is insane sometimes..doctor says i may have a intolerance to wheat/gluten..however she doens't feel i am celiac ..not sure if you can be intolerant and not celiac but okay..i said i would give a 2 week trial of no wheat a go..this has prooven to be insanely difficult. i cook for 3 kids under 5 and my husband and i love bread so i'm trying to find foods to eat..so many foods have wheat. i currently got some gluten free bread and some recipes to help bake if i have hte time but i'm having a hard time figuring it out. she said dont' lower your calorie intake your fine..i'm sure thats not what it is she said. but i looked at the calorie count and filled in the information and made a goal to loose 5 -10 pounds in a month or so and it said 1700 calories a day..I checked and i'm eating well over 3000 a day i'm sure..so coul dthis be the problem plus my IBS.

I eat well so i thought..better then i used to and i dont' eat junk food ..i have almost elimated pop and lowered my sugar and salt intake drastically over the last while and ihaven't noticed a difference at all.

i'm new at all this..so i'm trying to find a way to get healthier and feel better

i'm b12 deficient and get shots for that

and am low iron which i take suppliments for.

any suggestions would help.

words of encouragement anything. i really want to make the effort to look and feel more comfortable ..i suffer from diarreah ..it is very few and far between in the last 10 years that i have had a regular bowel movements..however and proud to say i used to not go for days but now go everyday..so thats a good thing..

I'm currently also trying colon hydrotherapy to help me really get started in healing the stomach while eating even better then i have been.

thanks

I don't know a lot about it, but I know I have heard a lot of people saying their symptoms of IBS lessen while being on an anti-candida or candida diet (Candida is the yeast in the lining of the intestine that sometimes take over....Long story!) Hope this helps

hi

thanks yes recently i have heard this candida thing. i'm going to look into it

You can be intolerant and not Celiacs. Celiacs is a hereditary autoimmune disease that causes your body to attack itself upon sensing the presence of gluten. This is not an intolerance.

Anyway, I love to use corn tortillas for just about everything! They're very versatile and delicious. There are also plenty of cereals and pastas made without gluten! I prefer bionaturae but I know others who like the Tinkyada brand (it's a little chewier). It can get pretty pricey but I like to stick to a lot of fresh foods.

Thanks Skinnyogi

I was wondering what cereals are no wheat?

Some of my favorites are special K, corn flakes, cheerios, golden grahms, rice crispies..

I bought some gluten free eblow pasta today and had a tuna macaroni salad..its great..eating it right now..This is a small step but i'm figuring out some foods i can eat that i like.

Thanks for explaining the intolerant thing..honestly it wasnt' making sense.

Now i know for sure i'm not celiac..however i am lowering my intake of gluten to see h ow it helps..this calorie counting is something i'm trying as well..curious on how that will work towards my goal ..its not the wieght that i'm concerned about as much as this stomach that sticks out..my friends and family really  notice it when its bad..they agree that i look months pregnant.it comes and goes and its very frustrating because it really sticks out and for the summer i can't wear anything snug because it looks awful. Honestly someone will ask me if i 'm pregnant but its jsut i've been tryign to figure out what i'm doing wrong with the eating that might be causing htis distended stomach. I 've tried cleasnign as well so far nothing has worked. I did isagenix once.. a 9 day cleanse..it was 200 dollars and only because my sister sold it at the time and gave me at cost..200 for 9 days !!!! it worked though ..it was the only thing that did. but i can't afford that. so maybe its a combo of things..

i'm working on it..

Generally having a guten free diet helps you to eliminate the bulk of junk that most of us eat unthinkingly and then allows you to add in items in a controlled fashion so that you can see your reaction to the things that might be causing you problems.

Want to cleanse your body eat these foods...

Fruit
Fresh or frozen fruit.

Vegetables
All fresh vegetables. Vegetables thought to be particularly good detox foods include broccoli, cauliflower, broccoli sprouts, onions, garlic, artichokes, beets, red and green vegetables.

Rice
All forms of rice, including rice cakes, rice crackers and rice pasta. Brown rice is typically preferred.

Other Grains
Quinoa, amaranth, millet, and buckwheat can be used instead of rice. They can be purchased at a health food store or in some grocery stores.

Beans
Split yellow and green peas and lentils are easiest to digest and require the least soaking time. Other good options include kidney beans, pinto beans, mung beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas) and adzuki beans.

Nuts and Seeds
Unsalted nuts or seeds can be sprinkled over salads or eaten as a snack. Good options include flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews and walnuts. Nut butters are permitted. Peanuts and peanut butter are usually not recommended.

Oil
Extra-virgin olive oil is a preferred oil.

Condiments
Vegetable salt, sea salt, vinegar, soy sauce or tamari, all herbs or spices.

Tea
Herbal teas, green tea.

Other Beverages
Water, lemon water, pure unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices, rice milk

Daily Detox Do's
Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day, warm or room temperature.

Take the time to chew food well, especially grains.

Rice Chex is gluten free IF it says gluten free on the box- I once ended up with a box that was made with barley malt and gave the people at general mills a stern talking to! There's also this 'puffed rice' that you can find at most supermarkets that is simply puffed rice. Really yummy, low cal too!

well i appreciate it..its been so hard to figure it out

i just started a GF diet last week because i've had so many problems within the last 5 years.  i was tested for celiac (endoscopy and biopsy) and it came back negative.  i'm feeling SO much better on this diet....so i've concluded that i'm gluten intolerant but don't have celiac.  i want to get the genetic test at some point but right now, it doesn't matter what i have.  avoiding gluten has made all of my symptoms go away!!

i just want to add that be careful of some of the things someone mentioned.  like soy sauce...sometimes there is hidden gluten in sauces and condiments.  you really have to read the labels.  if you can go to a health food store like whole foods or trader joes, they tend to have "gluten free" listed on foods.  if not, search online for websites that have lists of gluten free foods, and also what foods to avoid.  there is a really good website, but i'm not sure of the address.  i think i googled "gluten free foods" and it came up so you could check that out.  good luck!

HI

I have had IBS a lot of years, bloating, gas, looking pregnant forever.........

I have found MILK, CARBONATED DRINKS,COFFEE,   all of it are culprits

for setting off gas....bloating, pain....all of it.

Good Luck  I have been Celiac for 10 years and I am overweight!!It really doesn't seem fair but Here is what I do for my family.  Cooking gluten free can be very easy.  First of all I only use GF flour  There is not any flour in my house.  I do keep bread in the house for sandwiches for the kids and I agree READ THE LABLESwheat is hidden everywhere.  I often just substitute GF flour in most recipes.  I buy GF cake and cookie mixes,  Buy a Gluten free cookbook and I make mixes for such things as cream soups put them in zip lock bags and label them.  Good luck and If I can be of any help let me know

Hi,

I'm hoping that lowering my Wheat and Gluten will help.

For the past few months for some reason the gas has gone away. the only thing i did that was different was do a 3 month cleanse which included simply at fibre added to my OJ in the morning, 2  veggies capsules before i ate breakfast and then a tea at night that helped bowel moments. since then..no gas. but the bloating and distended stomach is still there. Which is the worst.

I have tried lowering dairy..didnt' help

I eliminated pop ..which is 98 % of my carbonated drinks, i don't drink coffee however have been drinking more tea..which i have either had only one sugar or no sugar ..compared to my old 2 or 3 sugars.

I'm not a snack kind of person ..but i love deserts but h ave them rarely.

I drink Green tea now and then as well.

I try to drink more water..i always feel better with water. i find that difficult..its like i'm constantly reminding myself to drink even if i have it out by the computer or tv or kitchen..nothing helps to get me to do it more. so if i'm drinking hte water i try to drink the whole thing at once..even t hough you should space it out..its a challenge with me.

I find eating Gluten and wheat free very challenging however and dedicating myself to 2 weeks as the doctor said to see how that makes a difference IF it does. either way lowering it conciously could really help me if that is the case
