Doctos ORDERS...NO RUNNING

Quote  |  Reply

Looking for alternative exercises or cardio workouts to burn calories. I was told "No running for two weeks to heal on care of tendinitis.  This is going to suck!

All help welcomed.  I made great strides, and don't want to pack the pounds back on.

HELP!

thanks, bob

Hi Bob:

Try cycling -- it's a great alternative to running.  If spinning classes are available to you, try them.  If you have a bike and the weather is good, try an outdoor ride at a good clip with hills involved -- awesome workout without the impact on your joints.  If all else fails, try the stationary bikes i the gym -- they also provide a great calorie burn without the impact, just not as much fun as a class or an outdoor ride -- still very effective.

Good luck!

Swimming is usually recommended as an exercise that has low impact on the joints since your body is fully supported.

However, you won't pack on the pounds from 2 weeks!! Stay mildly active, eat reasonably and you should be fine.

See my post on the ski machine. I had back surgery and knee surgery and this machine does not hurt either ...

How about the elliptical?  Can you do walking.  Maybe just do some weight strength training for the parts of the body that aren't injured.

Thanks,

i did the eliptical and the tread climber.  felt pretty good.

Kit,

Thanks for the tip.  i'll check it out

Water jogging is really great and you can burn off more calories without impacting your joints.  Get a water jogging float that goes around your waist.  You can usually get it at Walmart, or another dept store if your local pool do not have them available.  The float allows you to keep your head and shoulders above water while you 'jog' in the water.  It's great and you feel wonderful afterwards.
Your mileage may vary, but I suggest walking and lowering your caloric intake to account for the activity adjustment. I only say this because I've had tendonitis in multiple places and it can be a drag to work through (I've found most of mine were caused by muscle imbalances, causing some tendons to do more work on the muscle ). I had it in my left wrist a while ago and I took some time off. It came back, as it nearly always does, but it's nowhere near as bad since I did some tendon strengthening routines after the rest period. Two weeks isn't a very long time. I doubt you'll gain so much weight that you won't be able to lose it again in the following two weeks, plus, you'll be glad that you're better. Do you have achilles tendonitis?
If you've been running for 6 months or more you could probably benifit from 2 weeks of rest.
My vote is the rowing machine.  At least that will keep you off your feet and still give you one heck of a work out.  Plus you don't have to change and jump in a pool.

The tendinitis I have is is located between the shin and calve muscle on the inner portion of the leg.  thanks for the tip
