Why doesn't it happen to them?!
I'm over mine finally but wanted to know WHY DON'T THEY GET THEM?!
They--I'm talking about the Biggest Loser contestants (Ok, so the show is stupid. Of course if I didn't work at all and had someone yelling at me to work out 2 hours per day and tell me what to eat, I'd lose weight.)
Enough of that tangent, but I want to know how they can lose SO MUCH SO FAST without hitting plateaus and/or going into starvation mode.
l remember one episode when someone gained l think 2lbs
They are working under extreme conditions and under the supervision of doctors and other professionals 24/7. We can't hope to duplicate that. Also, I've not seen much follow up at all, and I do wonder how many of them gain it all back. Then there are the losers each week - only one wins at the end, so you have all those dropouts. What happens to them afterwards?
It's not a good idea to take that show too seriously. It's on for entertainment and out for ratings, not anything else.
Well when they don't have ANY other responsibilities at the time (job, family, etc.) and they can just work out and eat healthy all day, it gives them a leg up on us "normal" people. It's nearly impossible for them to cheat or get lazy!
They're losing huge amounts of weight per week because they're on extremely calorie-restricted diets, they have people surrounding them 24/7 to keep up the motivation, and they're in the gym all day long.
I don't know about you, but working out all day wouldn't pay my bills - however, I'd probably look pretty damn good ;)

I have been at a Plateau for almost 3 weeks. i have lose 32lbs. i have another 33lbs to go. i tired everything. just need help.
Why are you yelling?
I saw an episode of Oprah where they did a follow-up on many of the contestants. The majority of the people that Oprah had on her show had gained a lot of weight back, a couple of them had gained all of the weight back plus a few more pounds. And these weren't just the people who were eliminated early in the competition, in one case, somebody who had won an earlier season had ballooned up to their previous weight quite quickly.
Watching the show is like a guilty pleasure for me though. Something about it makes me want to do better for myself, go run a marathon or something. Of course, I like to think that I am realistic enough not to be disappointed when I don't see the same kind of results. But it is a nice little weekly kick-in-the-pants for my motivation...and I need that, to be honest.
As far as plateaus go, I know that certain weeks are harder for the contestants to lose big numbers. They usually go into the weigh-ins expecting smaller numbers on those weeks and sometimes people gain. Its like the third week or something like that? When the body starts to adjust to the new "lifestyle." But the trainers and cooks and doctors are prepared for that slowdown and have ways of getting around it which is why the weightloss does not come to a complete stop like when you or me goes into a plateau.
Plateaus stink...I'm just coming out of one and its just so frustrating when the numbers on the scale do not match the level of effort and sacrifice you feel like you are putting into it.
If anyone follows the show and is interested - Biggest Loser is supposed to be doing an "update" show tonight. Sorry this has nothing to do with the OP!
Since the OP was from March and was bumped by a post unrelated to the OP, I doubt anyone will mind :)

Oops...guess I should check the dates on these things...
Well, I still said what I meant to say anways :-P
Yeah, we'd all probably see some amazing results if we had personal trainers kickin' our booty from dusk 'til dawn, chefs planning the perfect meals, and doctors on hand just in case we pass out from starvation and exhaustion!
Where do I sign up?!? :D
