My doggy is sick

Quote  |  Reply

Today, woke up to a mess in my mom's bedroom (she's away for a  few weeks). Dog had peed, pooped and thrown up in the night. He's over ten years old, well-trained and well-behaved. When I took him out in the morning he tried continuously to pee for almost an hour before he'd come inside.

Obviously something wrong with his bladder and maybe other excretory system? I have an appointment with the vet made for this evening, but the work day is dragging by because I'm so anxious.

Someone help me calm down?

poor puppy!!! :(

the vet will get him all fixed up I"m sure! our dogs even had rattlesnake and moccasin bites and pulled through. :)

when you told the vet his symptoms did they think it would be ok to wait until evening to get him in?

yeah, and that's the earliest appointment they have. He seemed okay in the morning (other than needing to pee and guilt over the mess) and my little sister is home with him now.

I'm also anxious 'cause I'm not usually the one who takes him to the vet.

I don't have too much comfort to offer except {{{{hugs}}}} I hope your doggie gets better ASAP!

did he eat anything different last evening?  could he have gotten mushrooms or something else in a yard or on a walk?  and don't worry, dogs don't feel "guilt".

 My dog feels guilt.

If you're sister's watching him you'll probably get a call should anything go south. Can you leave work early??

 My dog feels guilt.

I assure you that he/she doesn't.  The US Air Force spent in excess of $3 million in 2007 to study canine behavior and how humans tend to anthropomorphise their behavior.  A dog is no more capable of feeling guilt than your coffee mug.  That is not to say that dogs do not have emotions -- I LOVE DOGS!  They simply don't feel the way that we do -- ask any canine behaviorist.

My dog is 9 and I found a softball size lump on his abdomen! I was scared senseless! They originally thought it was a tumor and due to his age there wasn't anything they could do. Turned out to be that his bowel had developed a pocket that was holding in feces. He couldn't pee or poo.

Because of his age they manually emptied the pocket and hoped it would heal on it's own. It didn't but when they did do surgery. . .he's been GREAT ever since.

He's felt better than he had for about a year (I just thought it was old age).

I had been getting the news for 2 weeks that he might not even come out of the vet clinic then suddenly they said yep he's doing great and could be picked up the next day. He's like a young dog.

I know you will worry (how could you not when you love them) but keep thinking postivitely as much as you can!! It's hard but try!

Give us an update! We are all hoping the best for you and your dog!!!

yep. dogs sometimes APPEAR to feel guilt. cowering, hiding, looking sulky when they do something they shouldn't have, but they are just reacting to the consequences they've experienced in the past. studies have been done where a fake pile of poop was placed on the rug in a dog's house, and the dog showed "guilt" as if he had been the one to leave the mess upon the owners return. if dogs felt emotions like guilt or spite, just imagine the things they'd come up with to do to us haha

bree, i'm sure he'll be fine! my dog has eaten something that made him sick like that and he was A ok. keep us updated!!

Thanks guys, for all the kind words.

I don't think it was anything he ate. His bladder has changed the past few weeks; he was going more often and the stream was weaker and it was taking him longer. I thought it was old age, honestly.

But this morning was crazy. There was this poop and then, in like some kind of crop circle pattern around it over 20 different little wet spots. I'm hoping it's just a simple bladder infection they can medicate.

They'll charge a fortune to check him out of course, but worth it!

yup could be a bladder infection or his prostate.

I hope he feels better soon - and you too!

Poor puppy :( My dog poops and pees on the carpet when she is made at me. If may not feel guilt but they sure understand revenge! I'm sure your baby will be ok! It's probably a bladder infection.

Update:

He has 4 bladder stones. 2 right in his wee-wee blocking the urine. He needs urgent surgery. Given that tomorrow is Canada Day and a holiday, Thursday or Friday is it. We just need to watch him closely to make sure he's okay until then.

I'll miss two days of work and have no way of clearing it with my boss first, need to find some way to get us to the vet 'cause my mom is out of town and I don't drive, and it'll cost me a grand but he'll be okay and that's what matters.

That goodness he made his little urine-feces abstract art to get our attention!

My guess was stones actually because I have a cat that has that problem, he's on a special diet for it now.

We thought we had to have surgery too but the vet massaged his penis to get the stones out and he pee'd like crazy, he was sooo much happier after.

You can always take him to an emergency animal hospital too (we did because vets were closed).

Hm. That's something to consider for certain to possibly avoid surgery. I didn't make it to the thread in time to calm you prior to finding out. :( Sorry! Perhaps... that could be tried first in advance? I'd ask. I'm not against any method of treatment. I think whatever is needed should be done though. :)

Some doctors like to cut though, imo.  And... Sometimes there are honesty better ways... Or: At the very least ...alternatives to try in advance. The surgery may be unnecessary if that works for your pet.  Of course. Maybe: The doctor already expressed to you that it isn't an option for some reason. I dunno. I hope they talked to you and/or tried that method while you were there.

Either way: I wish you and your doggy the very best.Smile

Imagine being unable to pee for an entire day++... yeah. =( I hope your doggie comes through ok!

Painful. . . Poor little doggy :(

The vet is happy to leave him! here that would be classed as an emergency and would be done right away....

Poor thing must be in so much pain.

The vet tried the massage-the-penis thing. He showed us the x-ray and all 4 are pretty big. It's pretty clearly surgical, sadly. Maybe if i'd caught it sooner...

The weird thing is he doesn't seem to be in any pain right now. The vet did give us an anti-inflammatory so maybe that's kicked in, and he can still pee a little. As long as he can still get some out the vet said we can wait until Thursday, if not we can do an emergency surgery at an astronomical price. I'm staying with him at all times, but as long as he seems relatively normal but for the peeing (he's eating, drinking, playing, licking my face just fine nad had a pretty decent pee this morning) we'll try to hold off until the holiday's over.
