My doggy is sick

Quote  |  Reply

Today, woke up to a mess in my mom's bedroom (she's away for a  few weeks). Dog had peed, pooped and thrown up in the night. He's over ten years old, well-trained and well-behaved. When I took him out in the morning he tried continuously to pee for almost an hour before he'd come inside.

Obviously something wrong with his bladder and maybe other excretory system? I have an appointment with the vet made for this evening, but the work day is dragging by because I'm so anxious.

Someone help me calm down?

On the bright side, our vet is pretty cool. He's really sweet and gentle. I went with my sis and I'm 22 and she's 18, but people always think we're much younger and my mom usually brings him to the vet. So I bet they assumed we were children, but the vet didn't talk down to us. He made v. sure we understood the situation well, told us exactly what he had done and what that meant, gave us a cost estimate, and told us he'd personally call tomorrow to check in despite the holiday.

He was also v. descriptive. My dog will never live the Smidgen 'Crunchy Penis' nickname down.

Hey, now. If this were your poor doggy you know you'd give him a penis massage and/or pay to have it done to help. Money mouth

The vet tried the massage-the-penis thing. He showed us the x-ray and all 4 are pretty big. It's pretty clearly surgical, sadly. Maybe if i'd caught it sooner...

The weird thing is he doesn't seem to be in any pain right now. The vet did give us an anti-inflammatory so maybe that's kicked in, and he can still pee a little. As long as he can still get some out the vet said we can wait until Thursday, if not we can do an emergency surgery at an astronomical price. I'm staying with him at all times, but as long as he seems relatively normal but for the peeing (he's eating, drinking, playing, licking my face just fine nad had a pretty decent pee this morning) we'll try to hold off until the holiday's over.

Ooh well. It was tried in advance and talked about. :) That's fair enough. You sound like you're covering all your bases. Kudos! I hope Crunchy Penis is in the recovery stages soon. =-P btw: Thank you for posting all the status updates.

He's having surgery today around 2.

It's currently 8, and I've just noticed his penis is like...splittling open at the tip? It's like one of the dtones is trying to get out but can't.

The vet was going to call back and confirm, so I'll need to mention this.

Baby does not look happy right now, but still kisses my hand when I sit with him. <3

I would call the vet now and tell them about this new development if I was you.  Better to be safe than sorry.  That must be really painful for the poor thing.

Good luck

Taking him in for noon now, and then going to work to worry some more. lol.

I don't think he's ever spent a whole night away from us and home before.

That sound so very painful. :( Tell the little guy to hang in there.

Best of luck!

Wow that sounds painful, poor little guy. Good luck, dogs are resilient, he'll be back up on his feet sooner than you'd expect. :D

what some "guys" wont endure for a penis massage...

Oh man, bad news guys.

My dog is gonna pee like a girl for the rest of his life. They had to cut a new hole.

The surgery was 2.5 hrs and contained many complications because 3 of the stones were stuck in his urethra and would not be pushed back.

He's okay, but I may not get him back today. The vet called yesterday and said "I'm just glad it's over." Apparently he had to call in back-up.

The bill sucks and I miss my dog. :(

Oh, sorry to hear that.  But at least it looks like he is going to be OK, apart from the new peeing method.

Are you able to visit him at the vets before you are allowed to take him home?  I know I was allowed to go and see my cat when he was in for an op and monitoring - it helped me not to miss him too much.

Sucks about the bill - vets know how to charge don't they, but worth it for your pets sake.

Thanks for the update, I've been checking in all day wondering how you were doing.

LOL just got a call from the vet.

Dog won't eat and hates his kennel so they're gonna let me take him home today. My dog is on a hunger strike to get home, the little brilliant angel!

3.5 hours until I'm off work and can go get him!

He's got his fight back already! Glad to hear he'll be ok. :D
