Doing OKAY so far...

Quote  |  Reply

I'm new here and I've started walking again, two days in so I'm still committed at this point...BUT I'm not quite doing 2 miles in 30 minutes...I thought I was doing at least 2 miles. I've read that if you do something 21 days straight it becomes a habit and you can keep it up, so I'm going to make that my challenge to myself.

Great idea, and good for you. Walking is such a good form of exercise for long-term health. It won't get you "ripped," but it helps with weight, blood pressure, flexibility, etc. Not to mention how great it is for your mood!

Once I had lunch with a student of B.F. Skinner (a very famous behaviorist from the fifties/sixties -- his "student" was in his sixties and a decorated professor himself), and he said that 15 times makes a habit, which is an even less intimidating number than the one you've got. I'd believe him too - he's trained his cat to use the toilet, just like in Meet the Parents.

Anyway, if 15 doesn't work, you can tell me that I'm wrong, but by that time you'll be 2/3 of the way to 21 already.

I like to break things up into smaller pieces, can you tell?

Good luck with your new plan :)

Thanks for the support...I definitely like to break things into smaller pieces, too!! And I do feel better mentally after I walk, too...with a houseful of people I have an excuse to have a little quiet time and just listen to my music!!
