Am I doing good with breakfast...? need opinions please
The last few days I have been eating 2 scrambled eggs with 2 slices of ham on a deli roll. I am trying to lose some weight and I am scared that I over eat for breakfast. On the other hand it keeps me full untill lunch and I am good with just a salad where I used to have only some cereal (hot or cold) with some fruit for breakfast and I needed to eat something in between and I was really hungry at lunch time. Any opinions/advice?
Personally, I dont think you can "over eat" for breakfast. I tend to eat whatever I want for breakfast, as much as I want and not feel too bad because its the first meal, breaks the fast, starts my day with lots of energy, and I have ALL day to burn it off.
Now with your breakfast menu, Id suggest maybe some fruit? or yogurt?
Is it good oils you are frying your eggs in?
How about adding a serving of oats?
Eg. 1/2 c oats cooked in water with maybe some nuts or dried fruit on top, 2 scrambled eggs, 2 slices ham, yogurt ----or something along those lines.
The ham, eggs and deli roll are providing you with the most filling combination of foods i.e. protein, fat and carbohydrate. The reason that cereals and fruit aren't as sustaining is that they are pretty much all carbohydrate. So if you're enjoying the eggs, scrambling them without just a little added fat, and if you're accurately weighing the deli-roll, ham etc., before entering it into your food log then keep going because that's a good breakfast option.
Other ways to get protein, fat and high-fibre carbohydrate.... wholegrain bread toasted with some baked beans or cottage cheese on top. Oatmeal/porridge made with milk and with some chopped nuts or seeds on top. Good luck
I agree with the other two posters... breakfast is my most important meal of the day. If I don't eat breakfast (or don't eat a good one), I am going to end up scarfing down way more food than I would like later on in the day. Protein is a great way to start the day and it definitely curbs my appetite too! If you like the food, stick with it... you could always mix things up from day to day too.... one day oatmeal (I like mine with wheat germ), one day an egg sandwich, one day yoghurt and fruit... it seems like you are off to a good start... keep it up! :-)
I agree with the other posters, but just wanted to add something. There is nothing wrong with eating a snack between breakfast and lunchtime, just as long as you account for it in your daily calorie intake. In fact, I find that snacking, along with smaller meals, helps me to feel more energetic.
I agree with all the posters that eating a breakfast of eggs, ham and a roll is a good way to start the day. The only other thing I would ask is if the roll is a whole-grain roll. Do the ingredients start with whole-wheat flour or other whole-grain flour? If the first ingredient is just wheat flour, you can bet that the color is probably from molasses or some other artifice rather than a good wholesome whole-grain flour. Adding the whole-grain to the mix will also help curb your hunger until lunch. Also, I have to add that having a snack in the middle of the morning is good, too. Yogurt and fruit, almonds and raisins, and so on are good choices of healthy fats and fiber and carbs.
Protein for breakfast is KEY so good girl on switching from your cereal! Other ideas... you could have grilled chicken breast with some sauteed veggies? Or even minced chicken breast in your scrambled egg! Ham wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast because typically there are a lot of icky ingredients added to that stuff, making it processed... and unhealthy. Chicken & Turkey breast are far better choices... or even having 2 eggs with some egg whites.
As usual I have to go against the grain. Most hams I have ever seen are choked with sodium. A couple of slices, could easily contain 1500-2000 mg of sodium, pretty much a whole day's worth of sodium. Eating it on a regular basis could be a ticket to high blood pressure. If you read the ingredients list on the package, you'll find there's a lot more than just pork and sodium in there too. I don't know about you, but I'm not comfortable eating food that contains lists of chemicals I have a hard time pronouncing with names as long as my arm.
2 eggs aren't too bad once in a while, but if you do this several times a week, you're looking at up to a full dozen a week and no one would seriously recommend that kind of egg consumption. Eggs have some good protein but they also have saturated fat and there should be definite concerns about the quality of the product, given they way non-organic chickens are raised and fed. According to CC, 1 large egg contains 72% or the RDI for cholesterol so two eggs would put you almost 50% over that in your first meal.
I could be wrong but isn't a deli roll just a roll made from white flour? White flour is basically the same to your body as sugar, digested at about the same speed as sugar. White bread is 70 on the glycemic index and table sugar is 65, actually lower. Additionally, white flour has had most of the fibre, vitamins, mineral and nutrients stripped out of it to enhance shelf life and workability, not because it's better for you.
So basically, your breakfast is salt, sugar, and cholesterol...so no, my vote is that it is not a healty breakfast...lol. Once in a while, sure...but you can say that about anything. Eating this on a regular basis isn't much different than the old bacon, eggs and white toast.

I disagree with this. Unless your doctor has told you to cut down on egg consumption, there is nothing wrong with eating eggs every day. There have been arguements back and forth about cholesteral in eggs, but studies now show that the cholesteral in eggs does not raise your cholesterol. Eggs are a fantastic source of protein, they fill you up and keep you going. I would recommend eating eggs as much as you want unless your doctor has told you otherwise as long as the fat fits in with your daily intake. I eat at least one egg every single day.
I would agree however with the ham, I think it's usually super processed. I don't think you need to go so far as to eat chicken for breakfast, and you can modifiy what you are eating to make it healthier - other suggested switching to whole grain.
I think a good breakfast for the same amount of calories would be 2 eggs with 2 egg whites scrambled with onions and peppers, topped with a bit of low fat cheese, and a cup of cooked oatmeal on the side. Or skip the oatmeal and make a 2 egg 2 egg white omelette with lf cheese and lentil chili on the inside, a bit of fat free plain yogurt on the top. DELICIOUS!
I'd also say that if you really really like your ham egg and deli roll sandwich, enjoy it once a week. Yes there are healthier options, but the reality is, if it fits in your calorie count for the day and you like it as an indulgence, then eat it. Yes it'd be nice if we were all "perfect" eaters and only ate grass fed meats and eggs, organic fruits and veggies, no processed foods etc. but for most people that is not feasible (even just the cost alone). Most of us try to eat as best as we can but most of us also have vices. I eat chocolate sometimes, Starburst other times. I love egg and cheese on white bread (I also can't get wheat bread where I live). Most folks will grab a lean cuisine once in a while if they are in a rush. Do what you can, enjoy the healthiest foods you can especially if you can make easy substitutions, but enjoy what you like in moderation from time to time. Good luck!
always eat some protein and some carbs at breakfast to jump start your metabolism. the portion size should not be that big as your body is just getting going. you can always have a snack two hours later like a yogurt or a piece of cheese.
if you find that its filling, it probably means at that point thats what your body needs. When I eat cereal for breakfast I get hungrier
and it doesnt keep me for long so I started eating 2 toasts with eggs (boiled or fried) and a cup of tea and it last me till lunch. What you eat depends on what your needs and if you listen it'll tell you.
if u feel 2 eggs is too much reduce it..or keep the ham out on some days....
I am losing weight fairly slowly (1lb per week) but I'm eating well and I'm happy and less frustrated.
Take care n gud luck.
I would say you are doing okay for breakfast.
But instead of doing two whole eggs, try doing 3 egg whites and it cut 85% of the cholesterol out.
I don't know if you are a veggie person but it you chop up some onions and red bells peppers up really small and and use a teaspoon of olive oil to saute them veggies and do an omelt like thing. Instead of having two slices of ham maybe only have one slice of ham and chop it up in your omelt.
And make sure what ever bread wheather toast or roll that it is whole wheat or whole grain. The white breads don't do your body much good.
