Don't eat too late

Quote  |  Reply
o.k i have hear all about how you shouldnt eat after certina times at night.now is this this to do with going to bed or what, becuase my friend not registered on this site so cant ask herslef, does night shift and all kind of odd hours, and we have many discussions on whether she can eat before she goes to work, becuase normally she stays up all night with work and then goes to bed when others are getting up.so does that mean that she is allowed to eat in the night when others would be in bed or is this not good for the whole weight issue.she doesnt have a constant change in shifts,so its not like she is always eating at different times in the night and then switches to days, her shift is always nightly.so she always sleeps throughout most part of the day. and she never eats in the day obviously because she is asleep.so is it o.k for her to eat through the night.

thanks.

When you say don't eat too late, it's not necessarily about the actualy hour, but at how late in relation to the time you go to sleep. That's why some people choose to stop eating 3h before they go to sleep.
I have worked steady mid-nights for the last 6 years.  I eat appr. 1000 calories while at work, breakfast a snack, and my coffee.
She should know her body and what it needs and on mid-nights it needs different things.
On midnights you need different tools to cope.
You have to understand that mid-nights is a whole different world.  Unless you worked it, it is hard to understand.
I personally love a full belly before I go to bed.

So I will almost every night eat something before bed.

I've lost 145lbs and done that since the begining. I honestly don't believe that whole "Dont eat before bed" sure, no steak dinners of course! But veggies, fruits, sure!!
I dont think it matters at all when you eat, only what and how much you eat. time of day has nothing to do with it.
I've tried every diet and technique and trick in the book over the course of the past 20 years, and I can tell you that it makes absolutely no difference what time you eat.  There is no magical time of day.  If you burn more calories than you eat, you'll lose weight as long as the caloric deficit is not to great.

The only thing I avoid at night is anything too rich or too sweet because it keeps me awake.
I've read that eating before you go to bed can actually help stabilize your blood sugar. When you sleep your body is still operating and burning calories. At night I try to eat something that is on the low glycemic index.
If your friend works nights she sleeps during the day so basically she shouldn't eat 3 hours before retiring for her sleep cycle.  At least I've heard its 3 hours before sleeping that you shouldn't eat, but I too eat before going to bed.  I haven't lost any weight so I know I should probably follow this guideline.  I think if you do eat before sleep and lose then the standard doesn't apply.
Rightly or wrongly I think the misconception about eating too close to getting to bed is that when you weigh the following morning your body will retain water to digest the food, whilst also holding the food as it has not been fully digested.

You still have the same weight in fat whether you ate 3 hrs before bed, 30 seconds before bed or whilst asleep waking and snacking.
What they said.

And this site is free, so your friend can just as easily register as you did. :)
Sorry, not going to happen with me. If I had to stop eating 3 hours before I go to bed, I would never be able to eat at home again! That and I would get too hungry and would binge on something not so healthy. I will eat all the way up to 20 minutes before bed and I am still loseing weight. I think it is bs, otherwise why would I still be losing?
I eat at night kind of often.  Your body burns calories throughout the entire day.  There is a misconception that anything you eat will sit there in your stomach while you sleep.  This is wrong.  It gets digested just like everything else.

The reason you should eat more during the day is because your body needs the food for energy, as opposed to at night when it's just...food.

So can you eat at night with no problems?  Yes, as long as it's within your daily caloric range :)
As long as you're eating within your caloric range there shouldn't be a problem with eating at night.

I try to stop eating at least two hours before bedtime because certain things give me nasty heartburn.
Remember not to eat cheese (or cheese based products) less than 3 hours before bed else you will get nightmares *nods*
Hmm.. I drink a protein shake every night just before bed :)
If you are hungry you should eat a little something. So you can sleep well and not feel deprived. I think the idea is to avoid certain carbs before bed, because you body will just convert it and store it, you are not going to burn it in your sleep. Maybe some veggie sticks or a piece of fruit. It depends on your body, but I am fairly certain that any fitness or diet professional will tell you to have your last meal a few hours before bed.
It's the amount of cals you eat each day... not when it's consummed.   Although for some people it's a health issue, my boyfriend can't eat and then lay down - acid reflux.  But, on the other hand, I absolutely must have my bedtime snack - usually a glass of soy milk or fruit pop.  Not a lot of food, just a light snack.
I work from 10 pm to 6 am.  Obviously this is a big part of my waking hours.  If your friend is up, and doing things,  This would be a good time for her to eat.  Time of day has nothing to do with it.  She can even eat right before bed.  Who cares?  Your body will digest the food anyway, it just won't burn as many calories.  No biggie.  Tell her to eat when she is hungry.  Time has nothing to do with it.
I have to be the one to say that I am pretty positive our bodies are run by cycles and that includes eating. There's a time when we should eat and a time when we should not eat. The body is an extremely intelligent system that cannot usually be tricked. Our metabolism slows down at night no matter how many calories you burn during the day. You can't stop your natural rhythm...it's built in. Your body knows when it's day and it knows when it's night. You will absolutely lose more weight if you don't eat after 8 p.m.

I eat anything and everything all day long, but I don't eat after 8 and I've lost a lot of weight. I think it was almost 10 pounds the first week I stopped eating at night. I eat dinner around 5 or 6 and I don't eat until the next morning.

Try an experiment. Eat all your calories at night while you're sleeping. Get up three times a night and eat a meal. If you don't gain weight, I'll buy you a car.
The best advice.  Eat when you're hungry.
tobethinner, didn't you say in another post that people should be seeking advice from their doctor instead of on here?  Why are you giving out your "advice" then?  Can you say hypocritical?
