why don't fat people tip?
I know this sounds rude, but why?
I am a server at Denny's and have been for about 8 months now, and I have seriously started to notice a direct correlation between body weight and genorosity....
I'm not saying that "all overweight people don't tip", because that is not the case. I have had thinner people not tip and I have had many chubby people be pretty 'sweet' to me... but when it comes to the obese, umm well not so much. I don't try to treat any one better then another, and I dont discriminate... but honestly I have noticed that very overweight people come off as rude, and rather selfish... even with good service and food.
is it just me? has anyone else noticed this too? (not just in the service industry but in general) I don't want to be stereotypical, but are the 'bigger' intimidated by the 'smaller' and feel the need to think we dont deserve a little credit for waiting on them hand and foot?
please someone explain this to me...

I haven't read the entire thread but I just want to say obesity is also inversely correlated with income (the less money you have the more likely you are to be overweight - in general in the US). I also would venture to guess that people with less money also tip less as often. So, perhaps this is where the relationship is.
this is a theory I was hoping to hear... not people bashing me, I was never intending to look for pity or anything... I get tipped like 98% of the time, so my service skills are not in question. Insult me all you want.
this comment makes sense, it is true that cheap food, is well, cheap. and for those who cannot afford to buy healthier alternatives are yes probably more inclined to be overweight.
thank you for posting this, it was helpful. I will try to avoid hurtful assumptions in the future, and do my best to be as undiscrimitory as I can.
This poster begins her post with "I haven't read the entire thread....".
I have said this to you before, Carmen. If you wait around long enough, and as alibuch said it was earlier than this post, you will eventually find someone who will tell you what you want to hear. It's a numbers game.
You are the one who set yourself up for these comments. Did you honestly think the majority of posters would agree with you? This is not rhetorical, I really want to know your answer to that question.

Applebees is a more expensive, classier restaurant..
OK I seriously wonder about anyone who uses Applebees and classy in the same sentence. Applebees is about as classy as a fart.
and um guys I was being sarcastic with that spending more money on food thing do I have to spell everything out?

Not to me! I have learned to easily detect spiro-casm.

I think everyone caught it besides the OP.
Spirochete, I caught the sarcasm. :) The laughter sort of gave it away. hehehe
I just hope, Carmen, that you realize that you are going to get what you give in most cases. You gave a bash, now it's your turn to take a bash. You could be upset about that, or you could perhaps think about not bashing a group of people in the first place. I'm sure your attitude comes through whether you realize it or not. Not knocking Denny's, an honest job is an honest job.
I have been woring in the industry as well for some years now. I must say i have NO Clue of what is Denny's ...
In the states isnt there something like a service charge?? when u get the bill, dont you have to leave 10 % for service charge or something like that? and if that is so isnt service charge supposed to go to the employees? If there is a service charge already then why would you actually give more?
As i say to all my food and beverage staff you EARN your TIPS!!! when guest ask me if they need to tip i just tell them if you like the service please do not hesitate to show them by leaving a few dollars, if you were not satisfied then please let me know why... so that we can improve.
Now in Cambodia, they get around 50$ of salary per month, tips are GREATLY appreciated.. but still this is not charity this is a business you pay to have a service and if the service is not there then why would you need to leave some more.... Charity??
I can tell when my server is being a phony baloney jerk. Most people have that ability. So if I went to Denny’s and got some chick in her thirties being a phony baloney jerk at my table for no apparent reason, I sure as heck wouldn’t tip well.

oh really? I have actually never been to Applebees, I have just seen it on commercials, but it looked nice...
and I actually did catch the sarcasm in that statement.. I just found it rather funny.
It is very true about the whole 'you have to earn your tips' bit, in which case I do the majority of the time no matter how horrible of a server you people think that I am. If anything I get way more good comments then bad ones, but that is neither here nor there...
sometimes the service is great, the food is great, but the customers are just cheap bastards. (like for example the story I had already posted of one of my fellow co-workers)
yeah maybe I am being harsh or mean or discrimitory... I knew this post would cause a fuss, obviously.
whatever. yell at me some more.
healthybmi your comment about me looking for a certain responce; uh well yeah! no where in my topic did I ask others to insult me, i just asked for an explanation as to why I have been observing this... perhaps I do give off a discriminatory vibe, perhaps they cant afford to tip etc... If I asked for the square root of 347788 and people kept giving me alphabet letters or saying that I am stupid, of coarse I am going to keep looking for the correct answer right? like why would I settle for nonsence... I have been taught since preschool that it is good to ask questions, there is no such thing as a stupid question etc. with every question I ask I get closer to my destination, and even learn something about life and myself (in this case I need to learn to watch what I say and act around others) kay? so stop trying to make me sound so evil, i'm not. I am young, curious and nieve.. trust me I AM learning, but I am not perfect
and by the way, your co-worker who argued with the customer who didn't believe in tipping was in the wrong. tipping is optional, and the customer was well within his rights to choose not to tip. anyone who knows anything about the service industry knows you don't argue with a customer.
you asked for an explanation; you've gotten several. sorry that they refer to your behaviour and not that of "obese people" but - well, you're the common denominator. right?
yes tipping is OPTIONAL.. but if you don't tip, fine don't tip.. just dont make a big deal about it. That guy did not have to flat out say "I dont believe in tipping" this was very ignorant and rude... if you cant afford a tip or dont want to tip then fine, I cant stop you. But you do not need to make a scene. Just pay your bill and walk away.
If you're tipped 98% of the time, what difference does it make if it's the 'obese' people who do not tip? That would only be 2% of those you're serving, correct? So if you made (let's say $100 on average) then that's only $2 that you didn't get tipped, right?
If you REALLY REALLY want those two extra dollars, maybe your solution might be to...BAM... work one extra table after your shift=$2
....ps debating with pg and thinkin' you're gonna win is like thinkin' you're gonna win the lottery in Saturday's drawing... NOT GONNA happen, hehe... seen it time and time again (just sayin')...
I mean winning IS possible....but then so is the lottery (but not likely) ;)
If I feel like a server is rude to me, I won't tip.
I take that back, I will leave the change (up to .99 cents) but that is it.
When I go out, I plan on tipping...but the attitude of my server determines the amount the majority of the time.
I think it is quite possible that your opinions of overweight (fat) people, may not be very well hidden...and these people pick up on it.
Just my 2 cents.
*slowly walks away backward out of thread* jk
I concur with moodstar, pg is definitely someone I hate being on the other side of a debate with. There are a few others too. Happily I am usually on the same side as all of them. It pains me when I'm not.
On the original subject, I feel that michellerc is pretty much spot on. Read her post and make adjustments accordingly imo.
Is jump roping as good an exercise as running?
In terms of calorie burning, moderate jumping is about equal to running a 10-minute mile, although calorie burning is always a function of time... Read more
