why don't fat people tip?

I know this sounds rude, but why?

I am a server at Denny's and have been for about 8 months now, and I have seriously started to notice a direct correlation between body weight and genorosity....

I'm not saying that "all overweight people don't tip", because that is not the case. I have had thinner people not tip and I have had many chubby people be pretty 'sweet' to me... but when it comes to the obese, umm well not so much. I don't try to treat any one better then another, and I dont discriminate... but honestly I have noticed that very overweight people come off as rude, and rather selfish... even with good service and food.

is it just me? has anyone else noticed this too? (not just in the service industry but in general) I don't want to be stereotypical, but are the 'bigger' intimidated by the 'smaller' and feel the need to think we dont deserve a little credit for waiting on them hand and foot?

please someone explain this to me...

Oh wow, this is just pretty much hilarious.

Maybe "fat" people order more food.  This would mean they would be expected to leave a larger tip than someone who ordered less.  Maybe, just maybe, they don't want to tip as much as they're supposed to because they spent so much money on food.  I bet if you average it out, they end up spending the same amount tipping as an average sized person. I don't know where I'm going with this.

So dumb.

I hope I am misunderstanding you. ( It's late and I'm sleepy)

haha jesusssss!

I wasn't being serious. I was just trying my hardest to make sense out of a stupid topic.

sorry?

I agree with those who say that I find it ironic that you claim to have 'disdain' for those who don't treat their bodies well, and yet have/had an ED. You of all people should have empathy/understanding.

You're probably giving off subconscious vibes towards your tables. While servers are always perfectly nice to me, I've definitely been blown off a few times because they figure because I'm young--20--I must not be a good tipper and therefore they shouldn't even bother. Most of my job experience has been in a restaurant (as a server at one place and a hostess at another), so when given the SAME SERVICE AS EVERYONE ELSE, I'm an excellent tipper. While these servers aren't rude to me, it's obvious that they've written me off before they've even taken my order. You're probably giving off the same air.

#62  haha michelle!!  I have to agree with you on that one! When I'm out to eat I've never ordered two or three or four of something.  That statement had me giggle while imagining ordering at Denny's

Server  "what would you like to drink?"

Me        "may I have one coke, an iced tea....and....... a cup of
       &nb sp;      coffee?

Server  "commin' right up"   (a few minutes later)
&nb sp;     "here are your drinks.  are you ready to order?"

Me       "ye s. I'd like the double bacon cheeseburger with fries, the chicken fried steak with a baked potato, a patty melt, and to start off with.... I think I'll have some nachos..."

Server  "seems as though you've ordered several things.  does this mean I am not gettin' a tip"

Me       "yes.... cuz I'm fat, I eat a lot AND I can't afford to tip..... by the way, can you put extra cheese on them there nachos?"

lol, moodymomma...you are out of control!

;) kelleigh

what do we ever disagree on, p0nda?  i mean, besides vancouver and indoor cats?

Way back in the mists of time when I first started frequenting the lounge - I don't remember what it was about but I remember getting my e-butt kicked in the showdown.

hehe p0nda.... e-butt

I don't disagree too often on the forums.  BUT if I had to argue with pg, I'd carry some e-pepper spray... ;)

oh please fill me in on the indoor cat debate

That crazy woman is for outdoor cats, while I am 100% opposed to them. She has some valid points but I remain adamant - if you cat goes outside, it needs to be leashed or in a cat run. They do far too much damage to the environment to be allowed to run amok.

Hum! well I am not overweight, and if you want a tip from me you are going to have to work your a** off to get it, and if you are lucky I might chuck £2 (approx $4) on the table for you, then again I might still leave you nothing! but then I'm Scottish and we don't tip, nor are we expected to.

Man I'm going to find it hard going when I come to the US, yur just gonna love me Laughing.......I'm expected to leave you a tip? why? I've had to work a damn site harder than you to earn my money, no-one tips me for it nor do I expect it. You get a wage don't you?

And now that you have disclosed how much in tips you do make you don't need any extra money from me.

So it's nothing to do with weight, maybe they are just like me.......mean with their money, and don't see why they should have to leave you a tip.  Smile

Here's your tip Money mouth

ah - I'm for indoors as well, but more for safety reasons. We're in the top floor of a duplex now so they can't get out anyways, but when we lived in a townhouse both our brats cats would dart out the door when they could. Both have been in cat fights, well the boy got in fights but the girl was attacked (neighbour's cat kept chasing her around our backyard clawing at the base of her tail, that cat even attacked me after and she got an infection). Then there's the issue of getting hit by cars, attacked by raccoons, dogs, etc.

My bf's parents live in the country and their cats are strictly kept outdoors. One of them disappeared some time ago, something probably ate it.

anyway-----------

ann - servers get very low wages over here, so they get supplemented with tips. I hate tipping too (and I deserve it more for the crap jobs I've had lol), wish they just had it like in Finland where the tip is included in the price of the food or maybe they're just paid better - either way I've never seen anyone tip there.

Does the States not have a minimum wage law?

yeah they and we (Canada) have minimum wage, but I believe there is a different one for servers. Don't know why, maybe because people tipped anyways and they saw it as an excuse to pay their employees less?? If you scroll down this page there's a chart.

I guess the USA isn't as nice as us:

The federal minimum wage in the United States has been $5.85 per hour since July 24, 2007. Many states and municipalities have minimum wages higher than this (see List of U.S.A. minimum wages), but some U.S. territories (such as American Samoa) are exempt. Some types of labor are also exempt, and tipped labor must be paid a minimum of $2.13 per hour, as long as the hourly wage plus tipped income result in a minimum of $5.85 per hour.

Geeeez. Here our minimum wage is $12 which is USD $9.13.  I cant believe your minimum wage is soooo freaking low!

I just want to stress that many states have required that either: 1) tipped labor (the employee) be paid minimum wage without taking into account their tips (in other words, tips are considered a bonus, which is in addition to the minimum wage that these employees are receiving) or 2) employers must ensure that the the employees are receiving the equivalent of minimum wage (if the employee's tips plus their hourly pay is not equal to minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference to the employee to ensure that that the employee is being paid at least minimum wage).

As a result, tipped labor actually earn at least minimum wage and, very often, they earn a lot more than minimum wage.

The minimum wage isn't too bad. So do they have to pay taxes on their tips? The op says she goes home with $120 and night in tips so if she works 5 days = $600 + what ever wage she gets, that's not a bad wage for waiting......
