why don't fat people tip?
I know this sounds rude, but why?
I am a server at Denny's and have been for about 8 months now, and I have seriously started to notice a direct correlation between body weight and genorosity....
I'm not saying that "all overweight people don't tip", because that is not the case. I have had thinner people not tip and I have had many chubby people be pretty 'sweet' to me... but when it comes to the obese, umm well not so much. I don't try to treat any one better then another, and I dont discriminate... but honestly I have noticed that very overweight people come off as rude, and rather selfish... even with good service and food.
is it just me? has anyone else noticed this too? (not just in the service industry but in general) I don't want to be stereotypical, but are the 'bigger' intimidated by the 'smaller' and feel the need to think we dont deserve a little credit for waiting on them hand and foot?
please someone explain this to me...

As far as I'm aware, people are supposed to pay taxes on their tips. However, I've found that most people who receive tips rarely claim the full amount of tips on their taxes, especially when they receive the tips in cash.
yeah that's what I thought!.....Huh keeping my hands in my pockets, unless they go out of their way to do something for me...(not just for serving food to the table) like giving me directions or recommending somewhere to go/stay, because chances are I'll be lost ![]()
fiiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz goes the bbbboiling blood!
we dont do the tips thing in ireland so im staying out of it!
minimum wage is €8.75... which i guess is about $13.70!!! holy crap!
The minimum wage for most servers here in the US when I was waiting tables was $2.01/hr, now it's up to $2.13/hr(such a large jump in 20yrs!).
This was the incentive for me to be outstanding when providing service for my tables. As I stated yesterday, it put me through college, which was no small chunk of change.
There are people who are just not cut out to do this kind of work. Period.

well it doesn't quite work that way :)
since I've been in Finland using Euros, I've noticed the numbers are generally the same. For example it's $1.50 for a loaf of bread at home, and €1.50 for one here. Know what I mean?
i tip well (as high as 40% if the service is exceptional) because earning minimum wage usually means living in poverty. but i feel for people like convenience store clerks who earn the same $$ and get no tips.
waiting tables is hard work, no doubt about it. dealing with customers is tough. but if you're not prepared to suck it up and smile no matter what, you're not going to make the big bucks.

ha, probably not the work for me then.
AMEN pg!
For me, I also tip very well and for me personally I worked in the industry so I understand it can be an extremely tough job. Plain and simple you have to deal with jerks sometimes when you make that decision to uhmmm work with the public! BUT those jerks come in all sizes, shapes, and colors, there's no pattern to it.
I remember my first day ever, I was terrified! The restaurant was packed! Well I got me one of those "jerks" ... I forgot to bring him his soup before his lunch... Well I bring him out his food.. and he starts yelling at me in front of everyone telling me how incompetent I was ect. and I mean LOUD, everyone was looking.( I had tears welling up) I apologized and did say sorry it's my first day... WELL needless to say I'm glad he did that making an ass of himself! The people at the other tables, were like"what a jerk""sorry for you honey, this is your first day" ect.... and I got a WHOLE bunch of "pity" tips from many of the tables, it was awesome!
But anyway, like I said I normally tip very well with exceptions! If you ignore me, I have an empty drink not getting refilled, things like that... you're not doing your job and I shouldn't have to leave you squat! You want to make money honey you better make sure you're on point!
You know who I tip the absolute best no matter what attitude? The pizza guy!!! OR any delivery food person for that matter! They spend a little TOO much alone time with my food, and that's the last mofo I wanna piss off! HAHA You don't tip them or act like a jerk, THEY WILL REMEMBER!
But that's the thing--servers don't make as much as store clerks and then make tips on top of it. It's 'assumed' that they make up the difference in tips. At my job, servers make 2.13 which is enough to cover federal and state taxes. When I was a server, we didn't have to claim our tips--our bosses 'assumed' an amount. Probably was illegal, yes, but I was only 16 and pretty stupid at the time. I worked at a diner and with the amount of people that came in, sometimes I would only leave with 25 dollars after a 6 hour shift, so I really wouldn't be breaking minimum wage, especially considering we were only paid 1.90 an hour.
However, I do agree with the sentiment that you have to suck it up and smile. It sucks when you're nice and provide good service and THEN get stiffed, but you aren't ENTITLED to tips--you have to earn them, because it's your job.

Well I am gob-smacked how can that be legal? that is just a scandalous amount to pay anyone!
Well I suppose I might give something......they'll still have to make the effort though
because it's just not something we are used to doing as the norm.
They get minimum wage which I think is £5.75 (there abouts) and any tips they make, plus working tax credit (government suppliment for people on low wage).
Applebees is a more expensive, classier restaurant.. I am sure I would make more if I worked some place just as nice.. but I dont, Denny's is a step up from fast food.. I don't expect massive tips... 10-15% is just a guideline
Now I'm laughing and I'm not even half way down the thread. You think Applebees is classy? Honey, it's a chain restaurant that serves frozen food that they heat up and embellish. They keep the decor dark so it hides the grubbiness. That's not classy!
Almost classy is Bahama Breeze, where they prepare mostly fresh food to order and the service is up to a high standard. Their waiters and bartenders make good money. However, it is a chain, so you can expect some things to be less than you'd like.
Classy is a fine dining establishment, one of a kind, where the service is impeccable and the food is cooked to order. Those waiters make the big bucks.
It occurs to me that what you have here is a self fulfilling prophecy. You treat your obese customers with disdain then blame them when they don't tip.
I don't know but maybe the same reason, bleached blondes, with fake tans and silcone boob jobs dont tip.
I have worked as a server too at various places and find that it is mostly the ones with money that do not tip or superinflated egos that rarely tip unless they are out to impress. But most of the time when I see a female who looks like Barbie , my co - workers and I know we won't see a dime but it is expensive looking fake.
I think you'll find that you can be reported!
Funny..........bet you feel better now that you got that off your chest!

Because it has already been smacked around by many, many people and debated heatedly by moody, pg, and p0nda, I am not going to give my opinion on the original topic...... you don't want to hear it, anyway, with my being a very fat person.....
What I am going to say is, young people today have no sense of tact. Yes, tact. Some of you may not know what this word means... it means "politeness", but it also includes the idea of "self restraint" or "self control". You know, thinking before you speak? Not showing your a** by saying things that are ill-advised. This should be your new smiley -->
Just because you don't like someone/something, doesn't mean you have the right to blurt it out without thinking about it first.
Learn some manners. Practice them everyday. You'll have more friends and less enemies.
PS. I realize this is the Lounge, and I am not saying people don't have the right to stick their foot into their mouths, but, for Pete's sake, when people get mad at you about what you say, don't complain about it later if you didn't use any tact at all.
ETA: Oops, my bad. I didn't look at her birthdate only the pictures. So she's 19. Eeep. Continue on with saying young folks have no tact.
lol jewelsmcblah, I didn't really look at her age, either. She looked pretty young, and she certainly acts pretty young, but I suppose that instead of 'young people', I should say 'some people'. lol
Anyway, I am a teacher; anyone that doesn't look older than me is a "young person" ![]()
