I don't feel so good, I binged. Can anyone help me out?
I just binged a lot, and I don't feel very good. My day's calories are 2600 (which I know isn't the most horrible thing, but this is a lot for me, about 1100 over, and those 1100 extra calories were all eaten in the past 45min!) I'm nervous because I used to have BED, and I would binge all the time, I would eat and eat and feel like I couldn't stop, and I'm afraid that I'll start doing it again. I don't want to come across like I'm obsessive about calories and stuff, because I know I'm a teenager and still growing, but I'm just worried because I have tendencies towards disordered eating and in the past I've had some serious struggles.
Does anyone have advice on how to conquer binge eating? Any tips on food that might fill me up quickly so if I ever feel a binge coming on again I can just reach for that?
Thank you!
well
look up low glycemic index foods
they will keep you full the longest
aside from that, in my experience a binge is never something people do because theyre actually hungry.. i think the main solution, and something that has helped me is to keep yourself busy
just do anything you can to take your mind off of it and get out of the position to binge.
Some people wont binge when other people are around, so try to go in public as much as possible, go for a walk, go to a play, do ANYTHING besides binge eat.
also put all your food on a plate and only allow yourself to eat that much, and eat it SLOWLY
also, figure out why you binge eat..boredom, sadness, happiness?... all of the above? [for me it is] and then figure out other ways to get around it
being overweight is primarily a mental issue, and because in our socciety food is so readily available and such a source of comfort it's what we'll reach for... the important thing is to change that so that you'll never actually want to binge
Hi, I have been through a similar situation. I would eat continuously and ended up gaining so much weight due to BED. But when I went back home during summer I notice I don't even think about eating at all!! I eat normally...eat when I'm hungry and I eat whatever I want (I mean...be realistic though. If I want a cake, just eat a piece...something like that).
Then I realize, it was because I have something to do!!!!!
If you have something to look forward to, sometimes you will forget about that "wanting" feeling. Try watching movie or read a book (it seems like a cliche but Twilight helped me go through it!!) Shopping online...or whatever!!! Just find something that you would look forward to do!
Oh...and sometimes....that tiny 0 calories coke/pepsi also help me get through the afternoon.
Good luck!
Rizzo....don't worry about this binge. It's done and it's over with. Like Scarlett O'Hara said in, "Gone With the Wind," ......"Tomorrow is another day."
The worst thing you can do right now is to beat yourself up about your error. EVERYONE errs. Be kind to yourself and just tell yourself you are a human being and that you make mistakes. Tomorrow, go for a long walk or do whatever you do to exercise. Understand the way to weight loss. If you expend more calories than you take in, you will lose weight.
Calorie count everything that goes into your mouth and put it in your food journal BEFORE you eat it. This helps you to understand and fix it in your mind that what you eat has consequences.
Set small goals. If you have a 100 pounds to lose, set your first goal as 10 pounds. When you achieve that, go to the next 10 pounds.
I have used this method of calorie counting and journaling and have lost about 38 pounds.
I am older, so I can use the roughage (LOL) but I have found that taking a couple doses of Metamucil during the day, curbs my hunger some. It will keep you regular too!
If you feel you need counseling, go do it!! Everyone needs help from time to time and counseling can help you understand about who you are.
Good luck!
thingirl: I will look up that glycemic index stuff, I've heard of it before! thank you for the tips! :)
charming_imy27: that's SO true! whenever I'm busy I don't even think about eating at all, but when I'm not...not so much. (and I love Twilight, that's a good idea to read them haha :)
willlbethinsoon: thank you, I think I'm going to try that trick of writing before eating it, it might help to see the damage I might make before I do it! and I'm starting counseling because I think it would help!
Thanks!
I have a day or two in the week where I don't count. It's not exactly binging days although sometimes it leads to it... A little bit. But whenever it happens, don't kill yourself over it. Relax. Just eat normally the next day! If you undereat the next day more than usual then this cycle will return. Just give yourself a free day or two in the week. I'm doing so much better because of this.
Rizzo, when it comes to losing weight, no one seems to be an expert. The only good advice I have ever heard was that one should not think of losing weight as a, "diet." As soon as you use that term, it seems restrictive and something that you will not continue after you get to your target weight.
My term is "lifestyle change." To get the weight off and to keep it off, we have to change the way in which we eat. Portion control is integral to feeling satisfied and to calorie counting. Keeping track of and counting the calories of what we eat is a lifestyle change and something we all must do for the rest of our lives. These facts are the reasons why "diets" do not work. Diets are not sustainable over a length of time and not palatable. Examples would be the Grapefruit diet, Akins diet, Jennie Craig and the South Beach diet. They all require you to eat only certain foods and this is wrong thinking for the long term. None of us should be saying we can't eat that donut or we can't have bacon. We all have to learn that those foods are high in calories and thus, if we eat them, knowing we have to count the calories, we should chose to eat only half of a donut or just one slice of bacon. Once you immerse yourself in the idea of lifestyle change, you will start feeling in control of your life and this will lead to success.
You are young! I stuggle with binge eating, along with other destructive patterns. My biggest tool is positive thinking/affirmation. No, it doesn't work all the time but it helps. Things to tell yourself everyday or when confronted with temptation:
(1) I love myself
(2) My friends and family love me no matter my size, weight, or what I have eaten today.
(3) Eating this will not make me feel better. It will not solve my problems.
(4) Eating this will make me feel horrible physically and emotionally.
(5) I am in control.
If you are hungry, try to eat something healthy. Drink water. Delay your binge. Treat yourself to something special if you thwart a binge. Forgive yourself if you binge. Tomorrow is a new day. Failure is when you admit defeat and just say "I screwed up today I may as well continue to punish myself tomorrow".
Good luck! Hugs, and if you need support, feel free to contact me!
