I don't know what to do anymore...advice please (Binging Problem)

Quote  |  Reply

For the past 3-4 weeks, I have been binging uncontrollably at night.  I've tried eating larger meals and snacks as well as eating small meals to compensate for the probable binge.  The past two weeks, however, have been the worst of all.  I've gained 5 pounds over the course of these two weeks and have binged every single night.  I've tried going to bed earlier but I always end up in the kitchen right before bed.  Tonight I ate a whole Lindt chocolate bunny (7 oz-1060 calories) in addition to many other foods.  Occasionally the binge is "healthy" such as fruit, but that usually involves eating 6-7 cups of mixed melons and berries.  Each night I end up with a major stomach ache, crying and wondering why I just ate everything.  My boyfriend just keeps telling me I'm fine, if it lasts for awhile longer then go see your doctor.  Being that I don't have a car (I'm only 17), I can't just go to my doctor and my mom refuses to take me.  I know being at 111 is a "healthy weight" but I am only 5' 3" and have a very small frame with very little muscle.  I just bought a prom dress and tried it on last night to find that it no longer fits ='[  I've tried drinking water, tea, eating "just an apple," chewing gum, and brushing my teeth.  Somebody please give me some advice as to what I can do.

Have you had an ed in the past? Because if you have then your body is probably trying to recompensate for the lost weight...anways, if not, then I completely understand and sympathize with you, I always binge at night too! I'll do well during the day and then for some reason when it comes to dinner time I'll eat a ton even though I can feel my stomach getting huge and hate myself for it. I think i need some advice too!

^ I also ask if you have been undereating before the binging.

Did this start specifically 3 - 4 weeks ago? If so what triggered the first one...?

The mistake is to eat 'small meals to compensate'.   Your body needs a certain amount of food & nutrition in the course of a day.  If you've not given your body the right amount it will demand extra energy.... .. FAST....usually in the form of sugary foods which provide an instant blood-sugar surge and energy boost.

The answer is to eat more during the day.  A good breakfast of cereals, oats, fruit, yogurt, toast, eggs.... Don't skimp.  Followed by a good lunch and supper.... plenty of wholegrains, lean proteins, LOTS of vegetables.....  Snack if you need to in between on healthy foods like fruit, oatcakes, yoghurts.....  Eat until you feel pleasantly full.

By giving your body sufficient energy and good quality nutrition during the day you will avoid the cravings for sugary junk at night.  But if you carry on undereating or eating small meals your body will make you eat more later on, just to survive.

just from the manner in which the question is worded I it seems like it are really sincere about wanting help. Only you can decided if you are ready to talk to someone. I read up online about controlling compulsive eating. You can get some great suggestions about steps to fallow to over cover compulsive eating and eating disorders. If you can't do it on your own or feel like you would like a little more support there are lots of people who can help. Smile Don't feel like your going it alone.

If there is a clear pattern of not being able to control yourself it makes it easier to overcome it. You can do things to curve the problem but, I'm really just not qualified to help more than suggestion. I'm not a professional and no one on here can give you help if you really need it.

many times binging can result from bad nutrition in your regular meals or to restrictive a diet (the "just an apple") - there are sometimes emotional problems involved (as in my case) and if that is it then you have to keep a log of your feeling over the day and when your binging starts what are you thinking of, emotional state, etc.

Good luck!

Ditto to the other posts.

Also, you say you have been binging for a couple of weeks now, yet you have tried many different methods. They say it takes 7 retries to break a habit.. or something like that, not positive of the numbers, heh. All I'm saying is, if a method doesn't work, try it again.

Also, are you eating enough fats and protein? If you are eating all carbs then your body is sure to crave more. When you have a snack, don't just have an apple - have some cheese slices with it, some peanut butter, or other things with protein. Carbs + protein = happy, satisfied tummy. Carbs + carbs = happy tummy for about an hour, then a ravenous tummy.

Thanks for your help guys.  I mentioned, but it may not have been clar enough, that I have tried eating regular sized meals throughout the day but still end up binging at night.  I was never technically diagnosed with an ED but my mom claims I was anorexic.  However, I began eating normally in August and have had no eating problems since then (except an occasional binge on peanut butter, but nothing major).  So far today has been good, as I took a 3 hour nap when I came home from school and am now forcing myself to do homework.  I actually walked home from school today while it was drizzling (2.25 miles) and keep telling myself that it's not worth it to keep eating because that will be counterproductive.  And yes I always make sure I eat balanced meals during the day.  My breakfast today was a piece of toast with cream cheese and cinnamon sprinkled on top, a hard-boiled egg, and some fruit salad.  Lunch was a turkey sandwich with turkey and lettuce (not really any fat but I don't like cheese or mayo).  Dinner was chili with ground beef, beans, and other veggies, some rolls with butter (2), and fruit salad.  All bread is whole wheat btw.  Thanks again for your help.

Btw, what I mean by the "just an apple" thing is that I try to pick a food that I will eat specifically for dessert instead of eating bits and pieces of whatever I crave (which turns into a large amount of food).

A 3 hour nap?  I wonder have you had your blood tested recently for iron levels and sugar levels?   Or just a general check-up?  Extreme fatigue can be symptomatic of some medical conditions including anaemia.  And fatigue/stress can cause cravings for sugar in an effort to get more 'energy'.

You could perhaps be not getting enough sleep, so your body will crave sugary things, or really just about anything to keep you going.  I'm 17 as well, and I know if I don't eat at least 1000cals a day, not incl. beverages, I'm extremely tired by 6pm, and usually crash.  I would rec. upping your fruit, honestly, and maybe laying off the beef, as it slows you down quite a bit. Still, go get your blood sugar tested, there may actually be something wrong with that.

I've had multiple tests done before (for my acne) and everything came back normal.  And about the naps, I've always been able to sleep FOREVER Tongue out.  Any weekend that I don't have work I sleep until at least 12:30, even if I went to bed at 9:30.  I've been like that since I was very young.  And I don't really feel fatigued, I kind of just don't know wha to do and don't want to do homework, so I just fall asleep on my couch while watching the food network Smile

Oh yeah, and before I forget, I didn't binge yesterday!  All I had after dinner was some fruit salad and green tea.  I think it might be from this post, kind of knowing I'm letting people down if I binge.  I think the nap helped also.  I had another one today but only for 2 hours.  We'll see what happens...
