Don't know where to turn?

Quote  |  Reply
I wouldn't usually consider posting something like this, but I just need some advice....feel free to delete if it's not relevant.

I just need people's advice/opinion on what I should do... I feel so lost in my life and I can't talk to anyone about it. All my friens are happy at college and I am just so unhappy and I want to move away but I don't have the money for it alone and I don't know how my parents would feel about me suddenly changing cities and colleges, they think you should stick with something once you start it. But I see my friends from othe cities and it is SO HARD to see how happy they are with their lives when I have no idea what I'm doing. I just don't know who to talk to, where to go, what to do...I am sooo lost. What do you think I should do?

Youre talking about switching colleges - which means youre currently in school, right? Depending on the school, they may have free counsellors (especially if your school has a health clinic) which can be super helpful for figuring out a wide range of issues.

Do you have health insurance? Does it pay for counselling? Do you have close trusted friends you can share this stuff with?

Dont get me wrong, CCers are really nice and give great advice - but its nice to sit down and talk to someone face to face.

Well, it's hard to know what to do without identifying what's wrong.

Why do you feel so lost and unhappy?

One thing that I have learned over the years is that you make your happiness.  If you are not happy where you are, you will not be happy just because you move.

If you are in danger, that is another story.

Please talk to a councillor about your issues.  A local mental health unit should be able to help you for free or a minimum fee.

Are you living away at college or living at home? What year of college are you in? If you think you are depressed please go to the on campus med. center and talk to them, they can help.

In keeping with "spoiled candy", "no matter where you go there you are."

Are you running to someplace new to find happiness or are you an adverturer?  I found that I'm pretty much an Adventurer and there is a difference between the two.  I'm a Nomad and get bored easily at the same job, same city, some scenery, etc...

But I don't have the kind of money it takes to live this kind of lifestyle.  Sometimes, not often, I feel trapped.  Fine line between the two places.

That's it, my ADD is kicking in and I'm getting bored again.

All the Best!

A lot of people are saying to go see a counselor, and I agree that may be the best option, but I can also see why you might balk at the idea of it. You don't necessarily have to go to one, but they might be able to ease you through this difficult time in your life, and/or help you realize some important things.

Otherwise, you will have to identify exactly what it is that is making you unhappy. You seem to identify "all your friends" as being elsewhere and happy. Where are your friends where you are? Trust me, your friends in other places may be happy, but they probably don't really know what they are doing either. Can you pinpoint what exactly you are envious about?

I also suggest seeing a counselor. But before you do, make a list of things that make you happy and things that make you unhappy. Maybe instead of your life having not enough positive things, there are too many negative things. If not, it can help you better analyze what is wrong.

I get down all the time with the direction that my life is going.  Despite being in a great financial situation and having all the things that would make a normal person content...  There is no reason for why I shouldn't be happy but I just am sometimes not.

I find that the best cure is family and friends, just try to hangout with them and enjoy life.

Thanks for all your help and advice everyone :) I will think about going to see a councellor or someone to talk it over with. I cannot pinpoint exactly what is 'wrong' in my life 100% I just know that things don't feel right and I am not myself. So it'd probably be good to talk it over with someone who can help me find out what exactly is going on in my head haha. I am usually optimistic so I am hoping that I will figure things out and it will turn out ok. I probably just need to do that cliche thing of 'listening to my heart' and all that..but I'm quite a restless person.

Depression really sucks, but fortunately, from my own experiance, it can be easily treated.
