hi,my name is diane and im a new member of calorie count. anyway, i have an 11 month old female akita x who is sweet as pie but doesnt listen at times. trainers in the area have told me its because of her age (dog teen years i suppose) and itll pass. but then my friend told me she saw cesar milan use a technique called the "sting" where you grab the scruff of the dogs neck and twist. im really really not comfortable doing this to my dog, i dont want her to be afraid of me, i want her to trust me. does anyone have any opinions on this technique?

Hi Diane,

I would strongly advise you to watch Cesar Millan in action if you get the chance.  He is amazing!  He has a very special way with him and those people who take his advice invariably end up with much happier, healthier dogs.  You can catch his programmes on either Sky 3 or National Geographic Wild if you have access to them.

Cesar teaches you how to be a 'pack leader' for the benefit of both you and your dog. He has observed the behaviour of dogs since his childhood and has amassed a wealth of experience in understanding what makes them tick. He certainly doesn't advocate the use of force or inflicting pain as a means of 'disciplining' a dog, and is never cruel, just firm.

He also teaches you how to become more calm and assertive around your dog, giving him/her confidence and helping him/her to relax and be less excitable, anxious or aggressive.  He helps you to build up a bond with your dog of absolute trust and respect.  Dogs adore him and are never afraid of him.

His methods are not a magic cure. It takes a lot of time, a lot of practice and a big commitment to the welfare of your dog.  I have a 55kg South African Mastiff (aka Boerboel) and he used to be a real handful.  His breed are historically guarders and hunters, and although he is like a big baby with me, very affectionate and loving,  he is extremely wary of strangers.  He was very protective of me and could get quite aggressive even at a young age.  As he is  so big and powerful I needed to be able to control him, and thankfully I discovered Cesar!  I would absolutely recommend his training methods without hesitation, especially to owners of large breeds.  Check out his website for more info.  Hope it helps! Best wishes JC x
