Why don't I lose weight?
Asked by anonymous on Jul 07, 2009 in Weight Loss

I have been counting calories for a year. I work out 4 days a week, mainly high impact aerobics with light weights.  I have only lost 5 pounds in a year.  I even hired a personal trainer for 6 weeks and no luck. I am not sure where to go from here.  I am a 54 year old woman, 5'0" 130 lbs, and I have another 10 lbs to lose. What can I do?

Answer

When you say you are counting calories, are you truly accounting for everything you eat and eating no more than 1400 calories a day?  Sometimes, weekends and special events increase our average calorie intake.  Review the process of keeping food records just to be sure you are doing it right.  And since 1400 calories a day is the amount you need to maintain your goal weight, just eat that amount, remain active, and let the chips fall where they may.   A loss of 5 lbs per year is nothing to sneeze at for a woman in her 50's who is only 5'0" tall.

Not All Processed Foods Are Created Equal
Fact: a diet containing whole, fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the best for a healthy mind and body. Although true, it can be hard to keep food fresh at home for longer periods of time, and if you have no time to shop every few days, boxed and canned foods become appealing. We often hear about heavily processed frozen dinners and processed foods worth avoiding, but there are minimally processed foods that do pack a lot of nutrition and may be worth having in the fridge or cupboard.
