I don't seem to be gaining weight?

Quote  |  Reply

hey guys, its me again.

I must sound like a very confused child, because I keep posting all these weird things. But I'm quite concerned because I have a weigh in on Thursday which determines whether I can go to singapore for the holidays (and I really want to go) but I just weighed myself and I haven't gained weight! It's so weird because in my last weigh in at the hospital, I was 35.4kgs and that was 2 thursdays ago.

and so I started upping my food intake and I've been following it quite strictly and I thought I was doing well because my mum weighed me on our machine this thursday right after dinner (and i needed to pee xD) and I was 37.1kg, but we took away 1 kilo from that because it was weighed right after dinner. So technically around 36 kilos.

But just then I weighed myself, expecting to be heavier, but I'm even less than the beginning! 35.1kgs! and this was about 1 1/2 hours after dinner as well! I'm really worried now because I have 4 days to get my weight back up, otherwise I'm not going to singapore and my parents are going to start freaking out again... can someone please review my meal plan and tell me how I can gain weight healthily? I'm not allowed to do any exercise btw.

Breakfast - 1 cup cereal w. 1/4 soymilk and fruit. (usually banana/strawberries/5-7 pieces dried apricot)

Recess - Apple + 30g mixed nuts/40g nut bar

Lunch - 2 slices sourdough bread spread with ricotta cheese, 3 thin slices turkey/chicken, lettuce and tomato. (meant to have juice with lunch but I'm scared of the sugar in juice...) so i bring a mandarin instead

Afternoon tea - small handful (about 10-15) nuts + 250ml flavoured milk

Dinner - what my parents have. usually steamed rice with stirfry

Dessert - Bulla Split Ice cream + small handful of nuts

Thanks SO much for any help or advice. I'm really really worried that the weigh in will turn out badly! I can't even believe I lost weight when I upped my food intake in the past week?!

This may mean, quite simply, you need to be eating more. What is your intake number right now, do you know? If you are just going by a meal plan with your nutritionist they will likely add things to it with you.

Edit: Ah, just looking over this again - it's counter-intutive to weigh yourself more than once a week, let alone more than once a day! Stick to weighing in once a week or twice a week to get a better idea of weight gain and loss.

EDIT

Argh! I didn't know I had an old account and accidentally logged into it ><

Can this account be deleted? ><

Eh, I can't really offer any advice but do come to Singapore. Singapore has a wide spread of fattening food to choose from! Cry

Wait, here's the part about advice:

1. Increase your snacks, eat more nuts, it's healthy and going to Singapore will help you gain weight too!

2. Talk to your parents about this, let them know that you really want to go, tell them that you hope they'll help you along the way to. That way, you definitely won't be alone. Don't worry, your parents will definitely support your cause!

3. Drink more water. You might be slightly dry when you're taking your weight. (Maybe, I don't know)

I'm not too sure what my intake number is, but I'm thinking around 1500-1700 a day? I try not to count too precisely or it might just start my ED all over again. And we've cancelled sessions with my dietician because we felt that she wasn't very supportive and not very good as she's very prescriptive. I didn't feel comfortable with her at all. We're looking for one right now =)

And I know I shouldn't be weighing myself often but I'm just so anxious about not going to singapore!

And toast - you just scared me alot haha. A wide range of fattening foods? Um... now I'd probably be scared to eat anything in singapore! I go to the hawker centre quite alot. What would something there be healthy and not bad fatty? =/ btw, I'm very familiar with singapore because I go there about twice every year, so I know all the local names for foods xD i loved char siew rice, mee siam, mee pok tah etc (but that was before the ED lol)

Your meal plan looks to me more like someone who is maintaining or even losing, not trying to gain. I agree with lalabanana, you need more. Try some of the following:

Breakfast: Could you add a couple hardboiled eggs? They're not terribly filling, but they will give you protein and fat. How about more soymilk and/or nuts with that cereal? Or maybe a piece of toast with nut butter on the side?

Recess: Looks good .. . maybe substitute the apple for some dried fruit to sneak some more calories in? Or, you could bring some trail mix with nuts, dried fruit, chocolate pieces, pretzels, etc.

Lunch: How about pesto and/or avocado on that sandwich? Maybe a side salad with dressing and croutons? Keep on pushing yourself to try juice, don't eliminate it from your diet. If you want, you can try working it in by diluting it with water . . . then it would only be half the sugar! And you'd be hydrating yourself!

Afternoon tea: Could you add something with carbs? Maybe toast or crackers?

Dinner: Eat more rice. (yeah, I know, easier said than done)

Dessert: This looks pretty good actually. If anything, just eat more of it.

Hope some or any of these tips can help. I know where you're coming from. Good luck on getting your weight up and going to Singapore!
Oh, wait a few more things.

Good for not counting calories. Don't start now, just trust your body. I'm years into recovery and I still can't talk numbers . . . too much of a trigger.

Don't worry about fattening foods in Singapore. Think of it this way- is the average Singaporean person fat? Doubt it . . . why do you think that is?

Haha, I was just saying that there's a wide selection of food available, from very healthy to very unhealthy. Don't be scared to eat anything, Singapore is a culinary experience. Good you know those foods, time to familiarise yourself with char kway tiao, cai tao kweh etc.

Anyway, seriously, don't be scared of anything in Singapore, we have our nanny (government) watching everything constantly- making sure we read the right news, making sure we don't eat too unhealthily etc. Pm me if you want to know more about Singapore or what to do there. :)

"Think of it this way- is the average Singaporean person fat? Doubt it . . . why do you think that is?"

Eh... I wouldn't comment on that. But definitely not American fat or Australian (I'm sorry but news media says that Australia has dethroned the king ><) fat.

I agree, talk to your parents and ask them for help/support, let 'em know what's going on.  But you should eat more if your trying to gain, this looks like maintaining.

Breakfast - 1 cup cereal w. 1/4 soymilk and fruit. (usually banana/strawberries/5-7 pieces dried apricot)

You could use whole milk insted of soy and have 1/2 a cup instead of 1/4. You could add a tbs. of peanut butter, a handful of nuts, or a hard boiled egg, too, so you can get more calories.

Get something natural like 100% apple juice no sugar added and then pair it with a banana with 1 tbs. peanut butter. That sounds like a better lunch.

Afternoon tea - small handful (about 10-15) nuts + 250ml flavoured milk

You could add some wheat thins, or another type of cracker. Make a home-made treat and eat some of that

Dinner - what my parents have. usually steamed rice with stirfry

Have something to drink with it, have more rice.

Dessert - Bulla Split Ice cream + small handful of nuts

Just eat more of it

Those are my suggestions but I hope you can go on your trip and have fun (:

Thanks so much, guys for all your suggestions and help. I'll try my hardest to add more calories to my meals, even though its really hard to do x.x But I'm determined to go to singapore!

And one more question that concerns me abit. I seem to be having a lot of nuts or peanut butter/avocado and I know they have healthy fats and stuff but is it  too much healthy fats?

because if I add all these things, the fats in one of my days would be the nuts at recess, the nuts/peanut butter at afternoon tea, and the nuts at dessert. Now that I look at it, thats a lot of nuts haha. And I'm scared that I'm getting too much fats? =/

Thanks again for any help ^^

Honestly, in recovery, fats are vital. Don't worry about percentages as long as you are getting a good balance of everything on a whole. Plus, if you are missing your period, they are also very important.

And nuts are yummy. >w>

Ok, thanks lala. That really cleared up the messed up thoughts in my head =) I was worried that I might've been getting too much fats there haha. and yes, I'm missing my period as well. The last time I had my period was in April, and that was before I was diagnosed with an ed... I really hope I can get my period back because I'd be devastated if I can't have a baby! D:

yeah i looove nuts. They're yummy and addictive ^^ I had lotsa nuts today. Nuts at recess and more at afternoon tea =)
