I don't understand the burn meter

Quote  |  Reply
It says on my burn meter that I burn 2700 a day but hardly doing anything? I can't burn that much off in one day surely?   I am 233lbs and looking to lose 80 lbs.  I am looking to lose 8lbs each month over a space of 10 months.  I can't understand, if Im eating 1200kcals per day and burning 2700 a day then how am I still standing? Surprised

You could burn that much -- but if you are only eating 1200 calories per day, you won't be losing much, your deficit is too high.  You should tryfor a deficit (difference btwn your burn and your eat) of no more than 1000 cals per day

If you pass me your stats (age, weight, height, level of activity), I will gladly verify and get back with you.  Because that does seem high for a sedentary BMR

any luck yet coach_k? I typed it in again and it came back:

You burn 2200 calories during a typical day. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and your average level of activity.

You can use this information to help you figure out how many calories you should be consuming to maintain your weight. On active days, you'll need more calories, so it's okay to eat a little more than you would on an average day. But on more sedentary days, you may want to reduce your calorie intake. If you want to lose weight, try to stay below your calorie needs or increase your activity level. However, make sure you are eating nutritious meals and not restricting your calories too much - eating too little or losing weight rapidly can be unhealthy and dangerous.

sent you back a PM
I just joined yesterday and I too can not figure out the burn meter. How am I supposedly burning so many calories when I sit at a desk all day for 12 hours?mIs that number the amount I should be burning during excercise?
Your body needs energy to keep it going 24/7, whether you're moving around or not. Your heart is a muscle and it never stops (we hope!), your lungs are continually moving as you breathe, etc. Even digestion uses some calories.
