I don't want to grow up!
I have been in school for over 18 years but I am probably going to graduate this December. I have 3 upcoming 2nd interviews with companies..the first one is today. I can barely believe that I am actually going to be done with school and working soon. I've done summer internships but I always knew they were temporary, so they just didn't feel real.
I couldn't sleep all night because I realized this is actually happening. I am seriously going to NOT be a student soon. Scary!
So, now I have to do 4 consecutive interviews and then present my thesis work to people that have the power to decide how my career starts while being sleep deprived and unable to drink caffeine(self imposed, but still!). Ugh. I've done my fair share of complaining about school, but now I don't want it to end! Being a grown up sucks.
Anyone else going through this transition or have any advise?
good luck girl! ha i need to buy some seismic and was thinking about you yesterday. truth. wish i could sit in on one of your presentations.
i went to school and worked and raised kids so no i have no clue what you are going through but 4 interviews? 4? that in itself is an accomplishment in todays job market. keep us posted.

I'm a Toys R Us kid.
I'm in the same boat. I graduated in May and started my job immediately. Almost 6 months later I am still struggling to adjust. The hardest part was when I knew it was the first day back for students at my alma mater (eekk!) and I was stuck in my office. :( I wish I had some advice for you, but like I said I'm still having a difficult time with it.
Congratulations on FOUR interviews though. watergirl is right - that's really something to be proud of. Maybe try focusing on your successes so far! But remember, you don't stop learning just because you're not sitting in a classroom anymore.

Doesn't sound like you're putting to much thought on the positive sides of being done school. Being a "grownup" doesn't suck.
- No more "homework" (Depending on if your job requires you to work at home at night)
- Steady disposable income (with 4 job interviews I think you're on track for that)
- No roommates
I love being on a real schedule. I love not eating noodles for dinner every night. I love the switch from keg parties to cocktail or dinner parties. I love what I call "playing house" with decorating and styling to my likes.
Even though I look back on school with very fond memories - I am glad to have moved on. Besides I promise you if you stayed behind and all your friends moved on it would not have the same "glamour" as it does in this moment (I did that).
Life is good - go out there with a positive attitude and don't get stuck in the past by not looking forward to the new things "growing up" has to offer. Right now you've just got the jitters from the "change". You're starting to face different responsibilities from school life - but really not anything more challenging or "Suckier".
Keep in mind: You're still the same person - just starting out on a new track. You were probably equally as nervous about the change from highschool to university/college.
You can do it - just look forward to it instead of being so down in the dumps.
Think about how many are unable to find work and count yourself lucky you have options. Maybe that will help with the short term fear?
As far as transitioning: I'm still resentful of the loss of summer vacations. Some things never go away. ;)
I just entered the work force after 16 years of school last september. I definitely miss school, I just love the academic environment. Working has it perks too though, like you usually don't have to "work" outside of working hours which is nice, frees up a lot of time. That's pretty much the only thing I can think of lol. So I guess my advice would be just to enjoy the last of it and look forward to a new and exciting chapter of your life!
Once you get settled into a work place, you'll realize most of the people still act like they're in high school. Gossip circles, people who don't have good hygiene, bosses' favorites. It's the same but different.

Lol I think she is referring to university, not high school. At least I hope she wasn't just in highschool for 18 years!
She was born in 1985, so she wasn't in college for 18 years either. It's 18 years total. And, work places are much more like high school than college.

Trust me growing up is better than the alternative and let's face it we're all a long time dead!!!![]()
I'm 31, going to graduate next year (I did the whole family thing then got divorced, never lived on my own before eeek!lol) and have just landed myself a new flat all for my very own self and my daughter of course.
I still don't feel quite grown up... (certainly feeling my age tho lol) not sure I ever will. I love being in school so much I've decided to become a physics teacher!
I honestly cannot relate. When I did my undergraduate I did summer internships in my field. After graduating I worked for a year before going to graduate school and have been doing summer internships each year. Personally I think going to college without any internships in the field is a bad idea.

I will never grow up. I think that my future job will actually be kind of fun for me, so I think going to work will be like going and doing something fun and interesting. It's the homework that goes along with it that isn't going to be as fun!
However, I thrive on my immaturity and crude way of thinking. So maybe I'll just turn into one of those dirty grandmas who wear g-strings and go around smacking young men's bottoms. Who knows. But between now and 80 years of age, I don't plan on maturing too much.
Thanks for all the replies!
Just to clarify, my 4 consecutive interviews were all with the same company, just different people within it. I am looking for jobs as a geophyscists with an oil or service company, so interviews are actually pretty easy to come by. I did 1st interviews with about 14 different companies(OMG...I am soooo sick of answering situational questions!!) and am on to round two. I had my first onsite interview yesterday and I have 2 more with other companies so far. I would LOVE it if I got offers from at least 2 companies so I have options, but who knows.
Yesterday actually wasn't that bad. I was just tired and stressed out, so I got whiny. All the people I talked with were super nice and they made me really comfortable. It was actually kinda enjoyable because we only talked about technical stuff. I much prefer that sort of interview. And getting to practice my defense talk was really nice. They gave me some good advise on how to improve some things and geniuinly seemed interested.
Yesterday was only about 3 hours, but I have an onsite interview with one of the major companies and its going to be aaaaall day long. And even though I live in the same city, they want to take me to dinner and put me up in a hotel the night before. I didn't want to complain to them, but I would really rather stay at home with my husband! Oh well.
I will be sure to update if/when I hear back!
Oh, and watergirl, are you looking to acquire data or just buy some that already exists? What kind do you want or what is it(2D/3D, multicomponent)? I love seismic data :)
Growing up means eating dessert first.

i think its very exciting that you are out working the job market!! i bet you will find something rather soon. i noticed that oil was up to $79 a bbl this week. thats going to help!!
perhaps we need to contract you!
looking for subsurface faults underlying particular land tracts. ideally we want a fault block for desal concentrate injection at a depth of 3000 -3500 bgl. i will be constructing cross sections and have some limited fault data from O&G activity.
in my mind we need seismic. of couurse buy some if its available, maybe even contract someone if its not. uncertain of the budget but we could maybe sell them on geophysical surveys if need be. i hunted a bit but didnt see much via google search or via UTIG or BEG or GEOmap which is the only subscription we have to O&G data.
i dont know what i need. what would you recommend for identifying faults? the tracts are each only a few square miles in area. even a tiny bit of guidance would be most awesome.
so are you interviewing in texas or was it colorado that you and hubby are thinking of relocating to? you told me but ive slept since then. :)
Entering the workforce does not mean you have to grow up.
Just remember one thing: weekends. :)
