Dorm Food

Quote  |  Reply

okay kids.

so you're in college, and the cafeteria food sucks, so you resort to eating/cooking in your dorm most of the time, so you can have healthy/nutritious meals.

what foods do you keep around? what foods can you actually cook in your room? (with a microwave.)

cereal is my hero, I love Kashi Autumn Wheat/ Cinammon Harvest and always have a box of it.

instant oatmeal.

tuna.

hummus.

veggies/fruits.

your turn.

Boca burgers/ Morningstar farms burgers, assuming you have a little fridge with a freezer compartment.

Refried beans. Rice, which can be cooked in the microwave with the right dishes.

i hate having to eat in my room but the meal plans at our school suck and i can only get 14 meals a week when i actually eat a full 21.  i always eat breakfast in teh dining hall so i can have my egg whites in teh morning along with some cereal and fresh fruit.  i tend to each lunch in my room or on the go

here are my essentials

tuna

lunchmeat

cottage cheese

lean cuisines

baby carrots

apples

bell peppers

cereal

pretzels

soup

fun size packs of m and ms

popcorn (fresh popped bec i brought my air popper!)

oatmeal

yogurt

uncle bens rice packs

fiber one (for when i dont' get my fiber)

I wish i could eat in teh dining hall for everymeal though bec then i get to eat veggies which i miss wheni have to eat in my room:(

I didn't cook when i was in a dorm with a microwave that often but now I do (living at a school apartment)

I eat alot of lean cuisine stuff/weight watcher meals because when I cook it it comes out to alot more calories...

I keep around pretzels, fruits, salads (packaged), different types of cereal, yogurt, popcorn. :)

oatmeal & soymilk
yogurt
cereal/granola
cottage cheese
microwave popcorn
tuna
soup
fruit
veggie burgers
occasional lean cuisine, but I'm not a huge fan
peanut butter
ww bread
almonds
wheat thins
laughing cow cheese

I haven't gotten really creative with cooking in the microwave but I'd like to try it if anyone has ideas...

i did this all year last year. a few things people have not mentioned are:

sweet potatoes (can cook in the microwave)

Salsa with chips

instant rice (can cook single servings of boxed red beans and rice or lentils in the microwave)

40 cal hot dogs

You can steam veggies such as broccoli in the microwave by wrapping them in a wet paper towel and covering with 2 dishes.

there is also a recipe for microwave veggie omelette floating around somewhere on the internet.

yogurt

special k protein plus

low sugar maple brown sugar oatmeal

popcorn

coffee and soymilk

sugar free pudding

and I have a meal plan so I go there to eat salad

and that's what I live on...It's pretty boring

Your dorm food sucks?  Ours was pretty good.  There was always a salad bar, fresh fruits and veggies, cottage cheese, yogurt, oatmeal, stuff for sandwiches, fairly unfatty meat, cereal, etc.  Our cafeteria was pretty good.

But if I got tired of that, I pretty much did what the posters above have suggested.

yea, weird, i also had awesome cafeterias at school, we all loved it, so many diff things to choose from always.

Nonfat plain yogurt

SF Handi-snacks

assorted fruits/ vegetables

salsa

brothers all natural chips

Smart menu baked chip

100 cal pop corn

egg whites

trim advantage protien snack bars

all bran added fiber

lots of water

XS energy drinks

quite a good variety

So um yea, when I lived in the dorm - my room came with a mini-fridge/microwave combo... but of course the fridge was not big enough for my roomie & I... so I bought another fridge... and we turned the existing one into a freezer: so I kept around some frozen ostrich, bison, beef & elk burgers, along with frozen vegetables bags... as for unperishable items, I had tons of canned green beans, tomato paste & nori sheets... I also bought a toaster oven (those puppies ROCK) so I could buy Salmon Fillets every so often and broil/toast them up in there, I swear salmon cooks BETTER in the toaster oven!
