Is there a downside to probiotics?
Asked by anonymous on Oct 01, 2009 in Nutrition

Is it possible to eat too many probiotics?  Are there side effects?

Answer

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that work to neutralize harmful bacteria in the body.  They occur naturally in cultured foods such as yogurt and kefir, but recently, probiotic supplements have become popular. Scientists agree that more research is needed before they can make blanket statements about the safety of probiotics, although people with severely impaired immune systems, as well as certain seniors, could have a bad reaction.  Some probiotics could interfere with with medications or trigger allergic reactions; however, it is generally thought that most probiotics are safe.  You should talk to your doctor before adding probiotic supplements to your diet, although it is safe to eat yogurt everyday.
