Dr. Ian Smith's Fat Smash Diet

Quote  |  Reply
I was wondering if any of you have tried this diet plan. You might have seen it being used on Celebrity Fit Club on VH1. Those stars have had overall good results with it. I've skimmed the book, but haven't tried it myself.

It's a 4-phase plan starting with detox, then building up to a structured eating system.

Have any of you had luck with this or have an opinion on it?

Tried it and starved.  It was too restrictive for me.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this diet.

The recipes in the book are ABSOLUTE TRASH.  They are time-consuming and expensive, but on the bright side also taste terrible.

This diet functions by giving very detailed instructions on what you may eat.  They are not convenient things.  You MUST have a food scale also, the portions are specific.  However, in whatever defense this very mediocre eating plan deserves, it does outline a workout plan.   IF you follow the workout plan, as those celebrities certainly did, then it will work well, just like ANY kind of eating plan coupled with working out will.

If you want to do a phased diet I'd recommend a different one.  My boyfriend likes this diet, but I think it's largely because I do all the work for him to be on it.  I don't think this one is very healthy, in phase I (9 days) my boyfriend averaged barely over 500 calories a day.

What a great way to start a diet, kick your metabolism down a notch!  :sarcasm:

Edit: I was also turned off by the condescending, mediocre writing in this book.  I'm fat, not stupid.  Don't throw unsubstantiated pseudoscience with a sparing dose of grade-school heath-class information at me and expect me to just swallow it down.  You would think someone with his educational background could be bothered to produce a more coherent piece of writing than this.  I searched this book very carefully for some tidbit of information that a 5-minute Google search on weight loss didn't tell me months before I touched the silly thing.  I didn't find one.
I suppose it would be easy for these stars to follow this diet since they have personal trainers to make up their workouts, lots of money for exercise classes, and personal chefs to prepare everything.

I kind of want to see what it's about, still. From the show I got the impression that there was plenty of variety with vegetables, some carbs, and lean protein. I tried South Beach, and while it worked I plateued big time. I think it's because of the amount of fruit I eat. I love fruit, but it's a carb and slows down that program! I'm hoping that with fat smash I'll be able to eat more fruit.
Jumping on the bandwagon a little late here, but I just had to add-I'm on the extreme version of this diet, because there's a lot of fruit and vegetables. I wasn't losing much weight just through calorie counting-I need something more structured to do so. And even when I started exercising, I started using it as an excuse that now I could eat more. Eating back your calories? Did not work for me. LOL!

However, I want to preface this next part by saying I am a vegetarian, and I have been for 10 years. So I'm already great at cooking with a lot of vegetables, and in unconventional ways. I haven't found one single recipie that was too hard or too expensive to make. And you can also find a lot of recipies yourself on the web. I'm learning portions-and I'm losing weight again.

Just my .02.
