Dr. Kessler, The end of overeating
in the video scroll to 12 minutes and 15 seconds to see his interview
what do you think?
Really easy to relate to, especially about how ultimately unsatisfying and useless most fast food is.
I watched an interview with him a while back. I have his book on hold at the library. I plan to pick it up tomorrow. Interesting to get such a valuable opinion on these issues.
Fascinating to hear about the chemical reactions within the brain as a result of the combo of fats, salts & sugars in processed foods.
The one part I did not like was when, in my impression, he seemed to imply that we are not "responsible" for not being able to resist the temptation of our favorite foods (not his words, my interpretation of what he was saying). I think responsibility ultimately lies within the individual. Yes, education/information about the options and the damage of certain foods upon the body is essential. But there is something I find inherently wrong with removing our responsibility from what we put into our mouths. Maybe I'm misintepreting what he was trying to say?
Regardless, I do agree with a lot of what he has to say and find this analysis of our conditioned behavior (the real addiction that occurs in the brain, the manipulation of those brain neurological circuits) very fascinating! It is also sad to hear about the impact this has and will have upon public health in our country.
What stuck me the most was the conclusion of that one study on the obesity myth which stated that touting the "benefits of weight loss" is perpetuating thinness (and especially female thinness) as a status symbol. I had never thought of it in those terms, but I can definitely see the daily value judgements we make as a society when it comes to thinness or fatness - particularly the thinness of fatness of women.

I read this book the month i came out and couldn't put it down. It changed my life for about a month. But of course once the impact faded I slowly went back to processed foods. I've never been a person that liked to eat at restaraunts luckily. I was absolutely horrified by the food indudtry in general, but even more so at the restaurant industry.
I saw him interviewed last weekend and it was very compelling. Restaurant food from fast food to fine dining is a real killer. It is amazing how much salt, fat, and sugar they can cram into something. Does it taste good? You bet! But it has tons more calories than you would think.
My advice is to be educated when you eat out. Before I go to a restaurant of any kind I go on the web to look at any available nutirtion information so I can make an informed choice and know what I am putting into my body.
I rarely eat out as much for financial as health reasons. This kind of information makes me pretty happy about that. The fact is that if you want to monitor what goes into your body, you need to handle it yourself. I thank goodness I'm a good cook, even if I hate cooking.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this book. They just got it in and I've been waiting over a month...
I haven't eaten fast food in 4 weeks, but let me tell you--it has been hard. This video really is true for me. When I went to the movies, I wanted popcorn sooo bad...Not because I was hungry but because the smell was overpowering.....
