Dr. Levine’s Ultimate Weight Loss Formula
Has anyone used this product? It's a fiber supplement that helps you feel full and thus lose weight. It's recommended by Mary J. Shomon’s in her books about thyroid disorders.
I don't know what type of thyroid disorder you have but my mom has hypothyroidism, and has had a very hard time until recently. She joined weight waters and has already lost 14 lbs(in 2 months). I don't really like supplements that trick your body. Just eat more fruits and veggies, your cal intake will be less and you'll be more full as well. And more water too...you can never get too much. Good luck.
Yeah, being a hypothyroid sucks. I'm finally at a point where I can lose some weight, but there are certain foods that limit production of thyroid hormone that I need to avoid. Broccoli and peaches being two that are a big source of fiber for me. I get lots of fruits and veggies, my fiber average was 28 last month and 20 this month, but if I cut them out I'm sure it will go down. Anyway, fiber is very important for hypos, and this sounded like a good source. However, it doesn't sound like anyone has heard of it.
In other posts people have commented on using Metamucil and I guess this would be something like that. It has several fibers in it though while Metamucil looks like just psyllium.
I sort of agree about avoiding supplements if possible. That stinks that some of the foods that are high in fiber are problematic for the hyothyroidism. What about beans? I make a big pot of vegetarian chili every Monday and use it for lunches and dinners throughout the week. Tons of fiber, tons of iron. It's easy, too:
Just take a can each of the following beans: black, light red, canellini, garbanzo, and chilli beans in whatever heat you like (mild, medium or hot). Add them all into a stock pot or crock pot with some red onion garlic, canned diced tomatoes, canned corn niblets, 1 cup veggie stock with a 40% less sodium taco seasoning pack, and some frozen chopped spinach. You can add or omit as per your likes (you need a cup of liquid, though, so it doesn't turn to paste on the reheat). I usually get at least 10-12 servings out of it. I often pair it with a salad or fruit.
Here's a link to the Mayo Clinics list of high fiber foods that I use:

Good luck!
Yum that sounds good, in fact I just might make that today. Do you know the calories?
I always forget about beans. I really need to add them to my diet. My problem is planning and preparing. A good recipe like that will work, but if I don't have anything prepared I just find something else. I experimented with turkey chili (with beans) and that was really good, but high in calories.
Twink- I'm glad I could remind you to take your Benefiber. ![]()

According to CC it's 369 calories. Very filling -- and you can mess around with it pretty easily to make it your own. I've added and removed ingredients based on what I have in the pantry and fridge at the time. I hope you like it!
Oh, and I'm the same way about needing something ready to go -- especially when I'm really hungry. That's why I like keeping this in the fridge for a quick grab and reheat option throughout the week.
BTW!!! Don't forget that fiber supplements have cals, I forgot to log them in the beginning, when I was all proteined out and needed fiber more than anything... turns out I was taking in about 150 more cals than I thought... not seeming like much but when you're going for perfection ever little bit counts... :) Just a heads up
If the pills worked, we'd all be skinny.
I have not heard of this, but an excellent but not wonderful way to get fiber is by taking kynsol fiber (not sure on spelling). You can get it any most drug stores and super markets. It is not for the light hearted. It doesn't dissolve and taste a little like paper. My fiance calls it living the k-Life, lol. It has helped him tremendously. It definitely helps fill him and he gets all his fiber. Good luck!
I'm hypothyroid also and just read about this on Mary Shomon's about.com. I'm thinking of trying it also. Do you know if it is available in any stores, like Whole Foods?
