To drag or not to drag?

Quote  |  Reply

ok I've been upping my calorie intake by 200 each day. I went from 1100 to 1300 then to about 1500-1600 today. Is this a good idea to gradually introduce my increase or should I bite the bullet and just go for 2000 calories?

Any input would be appreciated!

P.S. I'm recovering from anorexia of about 8 month calorie restriction (100-150 calories a day)

What does your treatment team say? If you're not already being supervised by a doctor, find one. It's hard to say without knowing how bad your health is right now, but dragging out calorie increases is almost never a good idea - it just drags out the eating disorder and weight gain process.

Unless you are at risk of refeeding syndrome, I would increase to 2000 tomorrow and then 2500 the next day. Again, you'd be wise to be under medical supervision.

Yes I saw my doctor Thurs. and she is the one who put me on a 2000 calorie diet. She wants to see a 2 lb gain a week and I'm getting some blood tests done Tues. My EKG turned out normal too so my doctor said we caught this early.

well if your doctor said 2000 calories a day then why are you posting here for confirmation? you know what to do. 2000 calories tomorrow, minimum.

Well she said to be on 2000 cals a day within the next few days so I was wondering how drastic of a jump I should do it or if I was dragging it too long.

if she was concerned about how quickly you added the extra calories then i think she would have made that apparent so in my opinion you should just make the increase starting first thing tomorrow. 2000 calories, and if you find you're coming up short and running out of time drink milk, eat nuts, have peanut butter on crackers, or make a smoothie.

Hey, I have about the same stats as you and I got nowhere on 2000 a day! I'm now between 3000-4000, sedentary, to make a difference, though for you it depends how fast you'd like to gain. If you can, it's best just to eat and keep eating without thinking too much about exact calories

Good luck

I think it was wise not to go from 1100 to 2000 directly - a 900 calorie increase in one day is a lot - but 1600 to 2000 sounds fine to me, especially since your doctor okay'd it.  The hospital I was in did 300 calorie increases every 2-3 days, I think.

If you're not sure if it's safe, the very best thing to do would be to call your doctor and ask her!
