Everyone always hates it when they are told to cut out the foods they love most. I know when the doctor told me to go on a cholesterol lowering diet, I cried when she gave me the sheet of "Foods to AVOID!" and on it were things I loved to eat every day. So I created this forum to allow everyone to exchange things they discovered that made the diet more bearable. So if you discovered that one food or ingredient could be substituted for another and still be just as good, let everyone know.

I use a 10-grain pancake mix or whole wheat flour to make pancakes practically every Sunday morning. I substitute ground flax for the oil in the recipe. Then, I just use a little extra milk or buttermilk. This morning I had 3 small pancakes, a sliced nectarine with a little cinnamon on it and 1 ounce of real maple syrup. I figure my breakfast at 417 calories. But since we eat a bit later on Sunday, I just have a lighter lunch. Well worth it. I eat flax every day in something. I really think it's helped me bring my cholesterol down.
I've found a great substitute for sour cream...and it's better tasting & much better for you than the fat-free or lite sour cream. Instead, I use fat-free Greek yogurt. You can substitute it for sour cream in recipes and also to put on a baked potato.
It can be difficult when you're told to immediately change your way of eating, but I've found that after a few weeks of getting used to the changes, you no longer crave those unhealthy foods you once thought you couldn't do without.
What are some of your favorite foods on that list that you are now told to avoid? Maybe we can help you think of some substitutes or alternatives that are healthy & may help to lower your cholesterol.
Hi, I am new to this website and so far I love it! I think I am home! I have been on zetia for a while now and it is so expensive. I also wonder how much damage it is doing along with the good. I read about it online and think it is a toss up. Anyway, my point is that I am determined to get the cholestrol under control without zetia. Maybe it is a dream, but I am going to give it my all! Thanks for being here. I have found the friends I need. Those who encourage and stay positive. I am around enough neggy nannies!
