Dreading vacation!!!

Quote  |  Reply
Wish me luck everyone ... I'm off for a two week vacation to California and am worried sick. This is the first time I have posted anything but felt like I could use a bit of support and feedback.

I have lost 30 pounds in the past six months or so and feel great but i eat tons and tons of fruits and veggies when I want to snack. I'm pretty sure this stuff isn't going to be as readily available as when I'm at home, plus we'll be eating out a lot.

It should be better once we get there but we have a two day drive! That's when the boredom and snacking are going to rear their ugly heads. I have packed a lot of Fiber One bars, triscuits, 100-cal packs of stuff and other lower calorie snacks but this isn't typically the way I eat - too many carbs (I know fruit has a lot of carbs but I love fresh food). Anyway ... enough rambling ~ would welcome any advice!!

PS Traveling with two small kids so we have several of the not-so-low-cal snacks on hand too!

I am jealous!!!!!!! I wanna be going to Cali for two weeks!!

Anyways--pack a cooler! Bring ice pops and pack fruit... lots of water and veggies with low-cal dip to break out....

And driving for two days... remember that bordeom= eating!! you have obviously learned well and used counting calories to your benefit, 30 lbs later! keep it up, be strong but still, dont forget to enjoy your vacation, but dont go overboard! Best of luck and have a great trip!!

Well first off congrats for losing 30 lbs, that's my goal!!

You're starting off on the right note, by bringing snacks w/you.  All you can do is try your best to eat the snacks you brought and to try to make the healthiest food selections as possible.  I know your fear I lost weight about 2 yrs ago and went on a 2 wk vacation and gained back while on vacation BUT I was not watching what I ate at all and I did not exercise,  So good luck to you and enjoy your time...don't stress just do the right thing!

Hi!  I live in Cali and we have marvelous fruits and veggies here! My suggestion is to hit one of the grocery stores when you get to wherever you'll be staying and stock up on some of it. And as laurie said, take a cooler with stuff in it too.  Sounds like  you're already preparing pretty well. And if you find that you just can't stick with the stuff you bring, just make the best food choices you can.  YOU CAN DO IT! :)
You know when your really committed to a diet when you dread vacation! I agree with Laurie16, just keep healthy stuff on call, don't settle for that greasy fast-food!

?
have a great time - dont worry bout the food.

and the not-so-low-cal snacks aren't for you anyhow so leave them for the kids.

we get bananas and apples for on the go snacks. that kept me going when we vaca.  we had continential breakfasts where we stayed - i had very large breakfasts - yougurt, oatmeal, fresh fruit but i wouldn't be hungry til much later than lunch. so i didn't need snacks.

we went to CA also. i found sticking to healthy was easier than i thought it would be.    =)
definitely bring a cooler and pack servings of fruit & veggies in tupperware or ziploc bags. they don't have to stay freezing cold and it'll give you something familiar and healthy to reach for instead of F1 bars & 100-cal packs (which add up FAST! during a day).

this works great with grapes & pineapple & containers of blueberries and blackberries and strawberries. (i love mixing grapes, cut pineapple and cut strawberries in a single container - great flavors together.) apples travel well. so do cut carrots, celery, cauliflower, red bell pepper, broccoli florets, cucumbers, zucchini slices, etc. you can even bring a tupperware dish of low-cal dressing for dipping veggies.
I agree with what the others are saying - you shouldn't be dreading your vacation!!!  Enjoy yourself.  The key is EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.  Stay busy, enjoy the weather, play with your kids, get out and do things and take the focus away from food and don't get bored!  And mabe some exercise will help you not stress about food... walk around town, walk on the beach, use the gym at the hotel for a few minutes a day.  HAVE FUN!!
I'm BACK!!! Thanks so much for the support everyone. I ate like crazy - lots of Mexican and wine YUMMY! and even managed to lose a pound. I have discovered that I think I am completely underestimating the amount of calories I should be consuming in a day and since I don't have a kitchen scale I am actual overestimating the weight of a lot of my foods.
I am still logging weight but have decided, after two weeks of not doing so on vacation, that I am going to try not being so strict on the calorie counting. My energy level has dropped a bit and from what I have read I may be in the athletic traid (used one of the bmi scales on vacation and discovered my body fat percentage was 8% which I realize is too low since I'm not all that athletic). I do lift weights religiously (which is probably where the problem is with my calorie estimation) so I hope I am on the right path!
Thanks again and any more suggestions, support are definitely appreciated as I try to find that balance. I have an okay time eating tons of veggies, a fair amount of lean meat and nuts but have a really hard time with the grains since they tend to be higher in calories. Any suggestions (okay - done rambling!)
