Want to get pregnant. Read that having green tea is dangerous while pregnant. Is this true?
Answer
I suspect that green tea is not a problem during pregnancy because the Institute of Medicine has not issued a warning. Still, researchers have found that a compound in green tea, EGCG, can interfere with the utilization of folic acid. Folic acid is a B vitamin that can help prevent birth defects during the first trimester. The amount of EGCG used in the lab probably surpassed the normal limit of two to three cups of green tea per day, but, even so, some women may choose to avoid green tea during pregnancy.
