Ok so, about drinking and weight loss

Here is my question. What if you have a drink or so (say 3-4) that brings you maybe 200 cals above your daily intake on the weekend in one night, and maybe one or 2 during the week, which are within your calorie limit - will that still cause you to gain fat or not lose fat? Is it maybe because your body burns the alcohol before burning anything else?

 

Ive been eating pretty healthy and keeping relatively active (roughly 1200-1500 cals/day) 4'11 and 98lbs. I feel like I've lost weight in my arse, but I think I just lost muscle there. I still have my belly and arm fat....could this be why? Or at least part of the problem? I'm not an advocate of binge drinking, which i don't do, but I am young and its still a part of my social life. Just wondering what the deal is here....

I understand about being young and it being part of your life (in an enjoying-it-moderately kinda way ;))!  I don't think that the amounts you stated (only being 200 cals over your limit or a couple drinks during the week) will cause you to gain MUCH, if any (especially since your weight seems ideal or even a little thin for your height).  Especially if they're within your cal limit anyway.

Personally, having a drink or two is usually in conjunction with dancing the whole night, so that's how i justify the calories :D

Then again, that's just my two cents :)

Like Rachelcrow up here she probably doesn't weigh more than 120lbs and I probably gave her a complex with that number. You are both small girls stop worrying about stupid calories. Whoa. Toewilson, there's no need to get antagonistic here. Everyone's body composition is different, and everyone has the right (within healthy limits) to watch what they eat and make sure they're taking care of their bodies. Don't attack others for doing that! Bitches are evil. Skinny people are not. Don't judge unless you want others to judge you. 

 

And as far as the OP goes, I wouldn't worry about it either. The cals you're talking about are negligible, and if you're watching your intake and keeping it at a good level otherwise, I don't see why you would have reason to be concerned. Keep up the good work and enjoy your healthy balanced lifestyle!

Big or small you still need to pay attention to calories and portion control. Skinny people just can't go around eating whatever the heck they want without gaining a pound. And yes, at 4'11 and 98 pounds you can still have fat on your body. That was crossing the line there.

I've LOST 175 pounds, now I'm 120 pounds, and you better believe I still count calories even maintaining my weight.

But anyway, back to the OP. You can enjoy your drinks in social occassions, but make sure to drink water before and after the session. When I drink, I tend to hold onto water weight the next day (but then again I'm more of a heavier drinker when I DO drink). I don't see why it can't fit in, especially if its just a couple hundred calories. I say stay social, stay safe, and stay healthy :)

Well thanks for the great replies.  They really helped me out. And what you ladies say is true, calorie counting is about portion control and healthy lifestyle. Some people need to relax a little, this negative vibe is giving me a rash. :P I'll just take it day by day, keep at it, y'all!

She weighs 98lbs. I understand counting your calories trust me its an everyday battle for me. I just can't believe at that weight someone is worried about their beer intake. I mean seriously I know you are all fighting for a good cause (ps its the same one I'm fighting) but seriously point out a 98lb person and tell me they need to worry about calories let alone BEER calories. I count calories and once I get to the weight I want to be I know I will have to continue counting calories to remain that size. But, its as if someone just went and ate McDonald's and said oh crap is that going to go straight to my hips... ITS BEER even if the calorie intake doesn't hurt her it will still slow down the weight lose process!!! If you want to get on here and defend someone go ahead, but atleast be honest with the person. Will it hurt her if she drinks a few beers, yes and no... does she really need to worry about those few beers... not really! And if you can't laugh at a quote from a comedian you guys need to eat a few calories because your taking life a LITTLE too seriously.

98lb at 4'11" is actually NORMAL BMI, not underweight. If I told you I was counting calories at 140lbs that would be ok? What is I was 6'0"? (that would put me at an underweight BMI, hint hint).

I guess you can say one doesn't have to count calories if they're 98 lbs, but if she doesn't, how do you know she won't balloon up?

And you can't possibly know how serious someone takes life just from one post. We obviously don't all read the books you do, so we're not all knowledgable about the "comedians" you are.

Listen, MY body is the only one I have, and I have nothing else to compare it to. I don't wake up every morning and think, well I guess I can eat whatever I want because there are other people in the world that weigh more than me. I count calories and eat and get self conscious or happy with the weight I am in relation to how MY body was before and how I want it to be. I'm not going to live my life comparing myself to other people's bodies. And I bet at the weight you are at, your height is not the same as mine, and your metabolism isnt the same and your excersize level isn't the same, so quit comparing 98lbs to whtever you weigh and CHILLAX. "can't we all just get along???" I'm sure you know that one.

Who said anyone was drinking beer? For all we know, shes drinking wine at a dinner party. But besides the point, I'll go ahead and answer a little more for the OP.

Will it hurt your fat loss? It might slow it down a little. 3-4 drinks does not = a couple hundred calories, at least not the drinks I make up. :)

I was shocked to find that the higher 'proof' alcohol I was drinking, the higher in calories it was. An ounce of alcohol will run you just over 80 cals. Like rum, tequila, vodka. The normal stuff. If you're "mixing drinks" with lets say 191 proof everclear, an ounce of that stuff has 190 calories in it. (I always thought it was just more "bang for your buck", but then I looked up the facts).

Just be aware of what you are drinking. Cal counts for almost everything can be found online.

So don't get any rashes :) No body was here to make a negative mood, I am just urked that "some people" have the nerve to voice opinions about someones size, and what they should or shouldn't be doing.

We're only human! And young once :)
