What is the Dukan Diet?

By +Mary Hartley on Apr 27, 2010 11:00 AM in Tips & Updates

Get ready to be pounded by the Dukan Diet.

The Dukan Diet is a book set to be released in the UK on May 13, 2010. According to Health News, the book has “already hit the #1 spot in the UK’s Diet, Women’s Health, and Men’s Health categories before even being released.”  The diet is based on a book, "Je Ne Sais Pas Maigrir", which translates to "I don't know how to lose weight,” written by French doctor/nutritionist Pierre Dukan.  It has been recently translated into English and 10 other languages.

What The Fuss?

According to Marie Claire UK, Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen used the Dukan Diet to return to their pre-baby bodies. That attracted the attention of dieters across this small, small world.  Now, I had thought that 29-year old 5’10” Giselle was just lucky in the body department and 40-year old J. Lo just had liposuction like Sandra Bullock (thank you, Sandra, for admitting that), Jamie Lee Curtis, Kathy Griffin, Demi Moore, and perhaps every over-40-year old Hollywood star.  Silly me.

Dukan (not Dunkin’)

And so the Dukan Diet let’s you “eat whatever you want” - as long as what you want is protein. The diet regime consists of four phases:  Attack, Weight Loss, Stabilization, and Cruise.

Attack Phase: Eat only very lean veal, beef, chicken and turkey (white meat, no skin), fish and shellfish, eggs, fat-free dairy products, and lots of water. The phase should not exceed 10 days.

Weight Loss Phase:  In 5 days cycles, alternate consecutive days of eating protein along with non-starchy vegetables and eating only protein (again) until you reach your goal weight.  Drink at least 2 liters of water per day. Do not use butter or oil.

Stabilization Phase:  Eat one serving of fruit, two slices of whole wheat bread and 1.5 ounces of cheese per day.  Twice a week, eat two 5-ounce servings of starch and all of the usual proteins - as well as pork and lamb – without butter and oil.  Twice a week, eat two unrestricted meals with wine and dessert, followed by a day of only protein.  Do this for the number of days that equals 4 days for every half pound lost.

Cruise Phase: Eat whatever you want with one day a week of only protein (sigh).  Dr. Dukan thinks Thursday is a good day for protein.

Seriously…

The Dukan Diet is a bizarre fad diet with highly limited food choices, rigid menus, the same plan for everyone, and no accounting for lifestyle changes.  It is a Protein-Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF), which has been around for 35 years, repackaged and turned into a book. The PSMF was designed for rapid weight loss for severely obese people with medical problems.  It features only lean meat, seafood, poultry, and some low-carbohydrate vegetables; otherwise, carbohydrates and fats are not allowed.  On the PSMF, vitamin and minerals are supplemented and patients are medically monitored to head off electrolyte imbalances.

And so despite movie stars and media blitz, the Dukan Diet is not recommended because it’s dangerous!  (Besides, I thought French Women Don't Get Fat.  Silly me.) Read about (but don't believe) the Dukan Diet in the UK Daily Mail.

Your thoughts....

Would you ever try the Dukan Diet?  Why would anyone else?

Comments

That is ridiculous!  How long would you be able to stay on a diet like that one??

sounds alot like the south beach diet. I did the south beach diet when i first started losing weight, I am a carb aholic. Cant do any breads, potatos or pasta. I have revise the diet but still none of the above and have lost 76lbs in a year. YEAH ME!! and still going. doing alot of cardio and weight training also. i try to burn more than i take in. And that is the key to weight loss.

Sounds confusing and annoying ...

Sounds like a cross between atkins and southbeach.  Diets don' work!  Make healthy life style changes and you'll get results.  Any diet that tells you to restrict fruits and whole grains is bogus.  Its sad how many good people fall for ridiculous plans like this and than feel like failures when it obviously doesn't work.

Yea, It does sound a lot like the South Beach diet repackaged.  I did the South Beach diet along with a friend.  We lost a lot of weight, but we gained it all back with extra weight added.  Now I am just eating healthy and exercising, and have lost almost 40 pounds.  I am not dieting but have a healthy diet.  If I want to keep the weight off, I have to continue eating healthy and exercising, and not return to over eating.

I am thinking I would like to try it.  I've hit the point where I don't have any hope of losing except for maybe via gastric bypass and I'm sure I'd flub that up too.  I'm very depressed and the more I see others losing weight through diet and exercise the more depressed I get, because I feel worse and worse about myself.  What do I have to lose by trying it?

It does sound like just another variety of low/no carb, high protein diet.  With some extra rules thrown in to make it seem original or different enough to get suckers to plunk down another $26 on yet another diet book.

The one thing I would correct from the above is that this style of dieting has been around for a lot longer than the past 35 years.

It was first made popular in England in the mid-19th century by William Banting, who apparently lost a lot of weight by cutting out bread and potatoes, and eating mainly bacon and other meats, eggs and cheeses.  He wrote a letter about it, which was later turned into a book - the first best selling diet book ever! Smile  It was so popular that the practice of eating high protein, low carb was called "Banting" for many decades as in, "I need to lose 20 lbs, but I've started Banting, so it will probably drop off in a month or two."

Here is Banting's book on Google Books.

Of course, as with any high protein plan, you will at least regain all of your lost water weight as soon as you eat carbs again. And if you don't exercise enough to build muscle mass, when you reach goal weight your metabolism will require fewer calories than it used to in part because you'll have less muscle, and you will regain FAT (not muscle) in a hurry once you return to carbs.

...I like meat, but I also like every other food in the world, that's why I got fat. <.<

I'll pass.

I am in the same position as rmweighley.  I am eating healthy in fact at the moment trying to eat vergetables and fruit.  Last week it seemed OK but I went out to for a meal sunday and all the weight I lost came back with a vengence.

When I was 18 I stopped eating and got anorexia but I was slim.  Over the next 15 years I remained gaining sowly and then at 35 did it again although not as severe but I did manage to lose a great deal of weight.  I had a baby at 42 and to keep from losing her I gave into temptations and gained over 60lbs, since then I have been  unable to lose weight.  I do not over eat. Oh yes and I had breast cancer at 50 eight years ago.  I am now at my heaviest and as I said tried to the veggie and fruit thing but it does not seem to work.  I do not cheat as I am only lying to my self.  This seems like a hopeful way although I find protein had to swollow.  Well I have ranted and need help.

Please don't be taken in by this latest celebrity-promoted diet!  All that protein with no balance of other nutrients would be very hard on your kidneys, which is why they have you drinking all the water.  I can't imagine that you will feel at all well either.  I had a friend that did this type of diet and ended up with gout!  (A build-up of uric acid crystals--a waste product of protein digestion--in the joints, usually the big toe.)

Instead of doing a fad diet like this, try planning a balanced diet of a variety of healthy whole foods.

Way too many adjustments in regular person lifestyle. The diet they should come up is the one that fits to every day life. For people that are going to regular grocery store, that cook 30 min meals and for people that will have an ice cream from time to time. I don't think that this diet is good for people that work out on regular basis. Where are the carbs? We need energy and the carbs supply that. Meat is good, but pasta and the other starchy food is good in moderate quantity. Calorie counting (making sure that intake is less then usage) and excersize 3-4 times a week is probably only long term weight loss program. If a person is struggling with weight most of their life, they will have to change their eating and activity habits long term. .

I have never felt as good about a LIFESTYLE CHANGE (not a diet) as I do with the way I'm living/eating now.  My husband just commented today about how amazing it is that we try all these contortions and rigid diets and hopeless rabbit trails in the pursuit of the holy grail of a decent scale reading or clothing size. When really all we need to do is honestly look at what we are eating, take the time to learn what will most benefit us nutritionally, give up JUNK (for the most part), and get moving. No gyms or diet books or delivered food necessary...it can be done.

Honesty in logging food, for me, was the hardest thing to face, and has been the most freeing. Knowledge is power! What was I really eating? How much, really, is 3 oz. of steak? How big is one medium red potato? Who stops at 17 chips, which is one serving?  How much cheese was I putting on my taco? It was such an eye opener.

It is incredible that we'll twist ourselves into knots following Dr. Dukan into  "Protein Thursday"... but somehow the simplicity of calorie counting is too hard.

rmweighley and barbaraspill,

nomoreexcuses is dead on-- don't do it-- it will mess up your metabolism and you will gain the weight back with a vengence once you are off that plan.  trust me --been there done that.

I felt the same way-- "unable to loss weight" -- but if I can do it so can YOU!!-- BELIEVE in YOURSELF and Love the person you are right now.  Much of my problem was self loathing.. couldn't understand --knew the weight was taking years off my life and couldn't understand  why couldn't I do something about it.

Start making small changes every day, week, month-- baby steps will get you there- and for heavens sake- for a while just don't worry what that darn number on the scale says- you need to heal yourself from within, emotionally and on a cellular level.

Portion control, good unprocessed food, YES, YES on Fruits and veggies, whole grains -- use your head, not 3 meals filled with whole grains, shoot for 2 at first and eventually one.  Write down everything you eat, log it on calorie count-- whatever, be accountable-- I know from experience that I was taking in many more calories than I thought.  BTW- No soda, diet coke or not-- that crap is awful for you, no added sweeteners real or fake-- just go cold turkey on that- it will be tough- but you will get through it.

Add some exercise, a little at a time, stretch with floor exercises and walk...everyday, walk... think of it-- you don't start walking you will end up in a wheelchair.  Add a few minutes every week-- eventually you will amaze yourself... keep a log, I know I wish I did.

much luck and a big hug- you can do it. Smile. strive to lose 5 lbs and then another-- they do add up and it will take time..

2 1/2 years- 110#s gone-- forever.    because learned the lifestyle changes that make being healthy a reality.

I would not try this diet. I do believe many people lose more weight when they concentrate on a high protein diet but it should still contain fresh fruit, vegetables and limited starches. I know I lose more weight when I can stick to that. Exercise helps me keep the weight off once I lose it. Good luck to everyone who is learning what works for them.

I had lap band surgery.  My diet is primarily that of the weight loss phase.  We can eat very little so we have to focus on protein first and then if you can still get something down, it can be a non starchy vegetable or fruit.  Plus lotsa water.

rmweighley I don't know what all your strategies have been, so I really can't comment on what you should try next.  But I can say that I personally had great success with the Curves approach (which is what turned me on to Calorie Counting and sites like this one)  to weight loss and exercise which is much more nutritionally sound that this Dukan diet appears to be.

Also, I am really mostly commenting because the world lost a lovely person last year, my former colleague, when she died from complications of gastric bypass surgery.  She did it because she felt like she could do nothing else.  And then it killed her.  I so, so wish that she were here today to keep plugging away using a nutritionist and a psychologist and whatever else it might take in this long hard journey to health.  Anyway.  Not everyone dies from gastry bypass surgery, but the risk is very, very real.

There's a way for you to be successful that won't hurt you. It might be slow, and hard, but you'll do it.  I'm routing for you.

In our house we are actually going in the completely opposite direction of less and less meat! Good for the environment and good for your body if you can replace it with lower calorie plant based protein sources, i.e. veggies!!! Having said that we are not at all rigid about it...(we had philly cheesesteaks this weekend!) but try to add more fruits and veggies and whole grains and just in general a balanced diet. Meat remains one of the items on our dinner plate but not the main one....

The idea of eating only protein makes me feel sick- how can a diet as rigid as this possibly be healthy? Oh, that;s right, it;s NOT!!!

Laura

It's amazing to me, with all the information out there to become healthy and lose weight, people still go for the "quick fix" It's "diets" like this that mess up your metabolism and strain your inner workings. People, please stay away from these unhealthy programs. These people are just trying to sell books and make money off of desparate folks tring to lose weight. Eat healthy foods,(you know what they are!) Get off your duffs and move! Slow, steady weight loss is the best and healthiest way to do it. Any "diet" that makes you gain back your weight after you "go off" it, is just not good for you.

I agree this is just another fad diet that leaves a person worn down and trying to keep up a diet that is costly and confusing.  I started doing Calorie Count.com on March 2nd and exercising 5 times per week.  I have lost 17 lbs and have grown to look forward to the stress release that exercising gives me.  I write down everything I eat and only have fruit for snacks.  I have tried several fad diets, some weight loss programs and nothing has worked long-term.  I know that I will not continue to lose weight at a rapid pace but I will accomplish my goal of losing 130 lbs over a period of time.  The most important thing to me is that I am learning a lifestyle change that will help reduce my blood pressure, blood sugar, and Cholesterol levels.  I am not bragging just excited to be accomplishing eating healthy and for once in my life exercising regularly.  Lifestyle change is the only answer to losing and keeping off weight.  I am just sorry that it has taken me 25 years to realize this!

I live in France and I tried this diet a year ago, it is terrible! You will loose weight, yes, but that is because you don't get to eat, so that should not be a surprise! For the first week I felt so very bad, headaches, and pain in my body and nausea (?). It is like every other protein diet I think.

I did after this another French doctor's diet, which is much better, not a fashion diet, but common sense, Jean-Michel Cohen; it is better because it restricts amount of food, but not food categories, so if you go out one night, you can eat regular food., or you one day want something specifique for breakfast, you can, nothing is forbidden, but some things are recommended, and you must watch you calorie intake.

I read the article and thought to myself... hmmm, looks like protein diet..   No better way to get your self in trouble..   Count your calories, exercise, and eat what you want in moderation..  It is like anything else in life..   Moderation, Moderation, Moderation..

My mother asked me to buy her the book as there are some hotel resorts in Tunisia that feed their customers the diet. I haven't read books in french in a long time. So my curiosity made me read it. It's not that stupid what so ever. the attack phase, first phase depends on the weight you want to lose each day of protein or hat they call PP (pure protein) phase is for 2KG of the desired overall weight. The book recommends 5-7 days. If you have 10 pounds to lose the duration is only 2 days. If you have over 40 pounds to lose the duration of the attack phase is 7 days.

The attack is a jump start phase that surprises your system. You are allowed eggs, lean meat, fat free dairy, Fish. 1 tbs of oat bran and and 2 tbs of oatmeal a day, 2liters of water a day. I tried this for 2 days with my mom, quite frankly wasn't hard at all. Meat should be grilled, I like cottage cheese and yogurt, ricotta, fresh fat free cheese. I made myself omelette's with ricotta and mint. I had grilled salmon which is quite fatty so no need to add butter or oil to it. I felt satiated. didn't eat bread, didn't miss it.

The second phase is weight loss, this is the phase where you introduce VG (carrots and beets in moderation) according to the book you could do 5 days of PPR (Pure Protein) followed by 5 days of PL (Protein and Legumes (Vegetable)) or 1 day PPR 1 day PL. or choose 2 days PPR 5 days PL. depending how fast and hard you want to lose the weight. If you are pear shaped like me and want to lose the weight around the hips you do 2 days PPR, followed by 5 PL. this will allow you to not lose you overall weight. during the PPR days do some massages to the problem area. You stay on this phase till you reach your goal weight. If you miss oil badly, he recommends mineral oil you drizzle over your salad.

The 3 phase is stabilization: I want to correct the article it's 10 days for each KG which means 10 days for each 2.2 pounds shed. approx 4.5 days per pound lost. i.e you lost 10 pounds, this phase should lase 45 days. You reintroduce in this phase all the foods you missed during phase I and II, but with the following restrictions: 1 serving of fruit per day (All the fruits are authorized but bananas, grapes, cherries and nuts), 2 slices of whole wheat bread per day. one serving of cheese (fat cheese) per day (around 40g). 2 serving of starch food per week (pasta, couscous - 7 oz / lentils, rice, potatoes - 5 oz). Avoid butter and oil as much as you can to cook those. - once or twice per week, you can have the following new meats: lamb, porc, ham. In this phase you're also allowed 2 full unrestricted meal per week but with the following guidelines: - 2 meals not 2 days.  the 2 meals have to be apart by at least a day. In order to counter balance those unrestricted meals, you need to keep one, just one day of PPR per week. Try to pick up the same day every week, like the Monday. It's up to you to decide for the day but you need to stick with that day as much as possible.

The last phase is the cruise this is your daily life. Your only commitment is a unique day per week of pure proteins.

I googled the diet. I found the below english website. I still find the book/french version layed out better. It has great receipes.

http://www.thedukandiet.org/

Sounds stupid like most of these book diets. People will do it with no results or do it, lose weight, stop and gain it all back. There will probably be a few people that get sick as well. I wish these celebs would stop telling the world to do things that are unhealthy and admit the real way they lost the weight.

As I was reading this article, a big red flag popped up "FAD DIET." The problem with diets as opposed to changing lifestyle eating habits, is we look forward to the day when we can stop dieting. For me, that day only means I can and will gain back every pound I have worked so hard to lose. My doctor has cautioned me that the yo-yo effect of gain and lose is harder on my system than if I did not lose anything. I vote for changing my lifestyle, not jumping from diet to diet.

I THINK IT WOULD BE OK IF YOU DIDNT HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF WEIGHT TO LOSE! FAD DIETS DONT WORK....I SAY YES IF YOU WERE WANTING TO LOSE 20-40 LBS...BUT NO IF YOU HAD A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT TO LOSE.

I found it interesting that the Dukan diet recommends that if you miss oil badly, you can drizzle mineral oil over your salad. That gave me quite a start and I looked up mineral oil on Wikipedia which states "the oil may be absorbed to a small percentage into internal tissue and cause adverse reactions to the body...Mineral oil temporarily coats the intestines and prevents the uptake of certain essential vitamins and nutrients."  It is a byproduct of making gasoline -- and they want me to eat it as an oil?  Sounds like a typical fat diet idea to me!

I am sure if i go on this diet i will lose all my hair .... seriously...

That's just scary.  The reason people lose so much weight is because they're starving their bodys of essential nurtients.  There's no way in hell I'd ever eat like this!

That's just scary.  The reason people lose so much weight is because they're starving their bodys of essential nurtients.  There's no way in hell I'd ever eat like this!

Um..  "Bodies".  starving their bodies.  sorry..

BLOOD TYPE DIET:  I just bought a book (25cents at a rummage sale) on eating strictly according to your blood type.  I just skimmed through it and it seems pretty interesting.  Has anyone out there tried this diet and if so, how did it work for you.

I started this diet last Monday, after months of trying to find some way to curb my destructive eating habits.  As far as I can see, the book is not available in English in the US, so I have gleaned my information of the method from various websites.

I have been on crazier diets.  This one was astonishingly easy to implement.  I lost five lbs in the first week-this after at least a solid year of false starts.  The difference here is that I don't feel at all hungry, blood sugar is very even.  I hope to be able to get the book oneday to really study the whole thing, but what appeals to me (aside from the lack of hunger and easy implementation), is the long term "consolidation phase" where you are re-learning how to nourish your body.

I know that I can do this, and I think the long term approach is quite nutritionally sound.

Totally would not try it.  The South Beach soured me enough on these crazy no/low carb diets with high proteins.  Sure I lost a lot of weight and kept it off for about a year.

As soon as I started trying to eat a more balanced diet though, I gained all 30 lbs right back and have been fighting to lose it ever since.

I'm aiming now for eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising just to be well.  Good health is aces.

too much protien is bad for the liver, bad for the kidneys. this is a bad diet and i would never do this. a balanced approach is much better. too many people looking for the magic pill. its a lifestyle change, not a diet.

i am doing 1400-1600 cal a day via 90% soup and salad and a little bread (both homemade) along with 5days a week workout and i am loosing 3lbs a week.  sunday is my free day. it works well for me. its not a crash diet. when i reach my goal weight, i will allow myself up to 2000 cal a day on some days, but ideal maint is between 1800-2000 as long as i am working out. you have to adjust the intake to your activity level. if i am workout out more, i will eat a little more. dont want to starve the body.

thats exactly right dragon.....its a way of life!

I think this is just another akins diet, this is very unhealthy and I would never do it!

friend of mine is doing it!(she lost 8lbs in 6 days)  I just exercise now because I couldn't do that for a week.  I was a vegitarian for tooo long, eating a little meat now but nothing like that.

This diet makes Atkins look easy. I don't understand the principles behind the stages, which sound metabollically weird.

Mmmm. . .I think I will just continue my portioning of foods and mostly vegan diet. Oh ya and when i'm out of school in May i'm going to start up my exercise routine again. . .lol it works for me and I count the calories I eat to keep me at the weight I want. . .self control is definately my most important tool lol But sometimes it's hard to control

Fad diets are fads for a reason. Like a poorly chosen tribal thorn armband tattoo, the fad will pass and the people on the diet will be back where they started, albeit a little less healthy. I'm here to make a permanent lifestyle change!

thats a fail.

I'm losing a bit of weight but not quickly by hardly eating any meat or dairy. I eat meat once per week (cutting down slowing before going vegetarian for ethical reasons again) and am lactose intolerant. I LOVE my veggies, both starchy and nonstarcy. And they have so many nutrients, as do whole grains. I couldn't do it. My mom put me on a very low carb diet (similar to above) when I was a teen. Worked great initially, then I just couldn't do it anymore.

This diet has certainly been around a while, I bought the book and tried it when it was the Quick Weight Loss Diet. It was then just for 7 days only, only lean protein and water.  I was 10kilos overweight after the birth of my daughter and desperate.  I managed to keep it up for 5 days but by thencouldn't stand the sight of meat so did a following week of fruit and veg. I lost 4 kilos and felt fine but would never consider doing this diet long term.

Totally unhealthy and definately not a good idea.  Best diet is to get used to five small meals a day (low fat, low sugar),and after a while you'll find that you just can't eat big portions any more.  I gave up butter etc for such a long time that it now seems really greasy and undigestible, I much prefer a little light mayo instead.  Sugar is more difficult but you will find that less is more.

sounds retarded.

Hey I was just wanting to encourage you!  Losing weight and getting healthy can be very disappointing at times.  it takes a long time but just keep doing your best no matter what the scale says.  In fact throw the damn scale out the window!  Or take a baseball bat too it!  :)

I would actually be very willing to look into it.  I personally do VERY well on Atkins in all regards (blood sugar, losing fat, etc) -- while I stay on it -- (which is quite easy for me as long as I use the oregano oil and fish oil).  But a ketogenic diet is not "high protein"... it's reasonable protein, and a high-ratio of fat... inducing the body to utilize fat as its fuel, rather than sugar.  But I would like to offer a big NOTE to ALL:  I have learned the HARD WAY that LECITHIN (and possibly the addition of bile salts & Betaine) are MANDATORY on these types of diets.   When your body is excessively burning fats, you need something to keep the cholesterol in the bile salts solute -- otherwise, women (especially) can expect some nice gall-stones as a reward for all that quick weight loss.  I recently read an article of a study saying that people who consume caffeinated coffee have a SIGNIFICANTLY lower incidence of gall-stone formation (de-caff doesn't work) -- so I would personally add at least a cup a day provided you don't have sensitivities to caffein.

As a vegetarian, this would never work for me. I believeʌ 79; a balanc᥿ 9;ed diet and exerci᥿ 9;se is best.

THIS IS STUPID!!  WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU LOSE THE WEIGHT? YOU START BINGING ON WHAT YOU MISSED.

This diet really works, One of my friends lost 20kg in 1 month. And after she stoped never put any weight back...

Gastric by pass can be a drastic move, but it works for many.  I would like to suggest checking out the medi-fast program.  You eat 5 provided  delicious and satifying "meals" a day plus a hugh lean and green meal of your own. I am full of energy and not at all hungry. It may be worth checking.  My sister lost 45  in 2 months and I have only been on it a week with 10 pounds off.  I like calorie count and will go back to it when I am at my goal.  medifast.com  Here to help if you need.
