Dumb dude needs advice!

Quote  |  Reply

I need help, serious help!

It’s taken me two years to lose 20 pounds (I was 160 pounds) and I never really dieted or exercised. Now that I’m down to 140 pounds, I want to lose at least another 14 pounds by mid September, which would be six weeks.

I’ve worked out my BMR and it says I should consume 2250 calories a day. Do you think it would be safe to consume 1200 calories a day making a 1000 calories deflect, which would work out as 2 pounds a week? I brisk walk everyday, sometimes walking 4 miles an hour, for about 90 minutes. Would I have to increase my calorie intake?

Because I’m a guy, I’m just worried that 1200 calories isn’t enough but I don’t want to eat anymore because I’m aiming to lose 2 pounds each week.

I'm also a guy and I've been eating about 1400 calories a day, 1200 is the bare minimum so 1400 seems like a safe bet

the BMR is exactly what it sounds like, the rate which your body burns if you were a blob on the couch all day and didnt do anything.  If you are thinking of that drastically cutting calories (which is probably not a good idea, do it more gradually.  A defecit of 1000 a day is a LOT, and probably not sustainable.  You may lose more muscle than fat.)

Anways, if you are going to do it anyways, if I were you I would defnintely eat any calories you exercise off.  If you dont you will have an even bigger defecit than 1000 and will defnintely lose lean weight.

How about NO.

Only eat 500 less than what your BMR says. Why are you trying to lose "at least" 14 pounds by mid September anyways? Will the world explode if you don't? You'll just end up getting sick if you play that game.

A reasonable weight loss is an average of 1 lbs per week

Experts recommend weight loss at the rate of 0.5-2 lbs/week. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

Generally, women should not consume any less than 1,200 calories per day, and men should not consume less than 1,500 calories per day.

Shoot for around 1,800 calories per day. more on the days you exercise. a 90 minute walk at 3.5 miles per hour burns around 400 calories for you, so you will want 400 more calories on those days. Once a week get your full 2250 calories, it will help prevent your weight loss from stalling..

here is what my calorie intake has been for the week

Monday : 1,849

Tuesday: 1,918

Wednesday: 2,146

Thursday: 2,413

Friday: 1,898

I have lost two pounds this week, but I am also 6' 3" tall and considerably heavier then you. It is unlikely you will lose two pounds per week, shoot for one pound per week...

As you can see I'm well above 1,200 calories per day and still losing weight, at 1,200 calories per day you will initially lose weight, but it will stall out on you because your metabolism will slow to try and compansate and you will have to start eating more to restart you weight loss. most likely gaining some weight and setting your goal back in the process...

The closer you are to your ideal weight the slower you are going to lose...

Hey.....I'm a 21 y/o 5'7'' male who weighs in the 140's now....

when I want to lose weight and drop into the low 130's I find that eating like 1200 cals a day and briskly walking like 4 miles does the trick (it's weird we have the same exercise pattern lol)....but I do know a guy who is exercising that much should prb eat more (isn't the recommended cal goal for me wanting to lose weight like roughly 1500 cals a day w/out exercise or something like that?).....

I would warn you though....the past two weeks I ate only 1200 cals a day and walked/jogged combo 8 miles everyday...I lost like 8 lbs, but it def. made me feel kind of sluggish and I thought it was stupid after a while....and I stopped...and this is comming from someone who really used to starve themself to lose weight and did it for a long time....so it isn't healthy nor sustainable....please remember that and follow my advice....it is a slippery slope and can develop in an ED (it did for me)...

my one question would be this though, why are you looking to drop another 14 lbs if you weigh 140....I just know when I do that from time to time I tend to look a little odd as much as I am really really into the whole skinny thing lol...just wondering...how tall/old are you?

I also am contemplating losing like 15 lbs and I am in the like low 140's now like I said before....maybe we can talk? lol

I might get hated on for this, but why do you guys want to weigh so little?  (Referring to gizziimo and lalce1)  125-130 lbs. goal? Girls who are 5'3" weigh that much.

Is it a skinny jeans / emo trend or something?

why is 125 or 130's too low for a guy if it is in their healthy BMI range? If it's ok for a girl to weigh at the end of her BMI range, I don't see what the issue is for a guy. I guess that's something to think about. I look at it like this, I like being on the thinner side and don't have a lot of muscle and stuff in my upper body (never did) and really don't mind it...

and I personally don't have skinny jeabs or like the emo look at all lol.....

As long as it's in your healthy range, I don't see a problem with being tall and skinny.  I know my brother is 6'2, and while I don't know his weight, he's incredibly skinny, even with some toned muscle.  (Apparently he got all the good genes - he's naturally active, and has a really high metabolism - he can really pack away the food and never gain an ounce.  Sometimes I wonder if we're really related.) Some tall guys just tend toward thin and lanky.

Realistically, guys shouldn't eat less than 1500 calories a day, and that's if they're sedentary.  I'd agree with trying 1800 - I'm betting you'll lose weight pretty quickly at that level.

Make sure you eat at least 1500 or your body goes into starvation mode and you wont lose anything, its a good idea to have at least 1 day off I used to be a Weight Watchers leader and have had a lot of experience with both men & women's weight losses, when one of my clients got stuck and stopped losing I would suggest that they did a day on the correct amount and a day over then under the same applies with calories and usually this would kick start their metabolisum and help them lose the following week, I lost 75bs but it took me 14 months on an average of 2lb a week

Keep positive and good luck

You're right to be worried. Sedentary, light-weight, men over fifty need 1500 cals as a bare minimum.  If you're under fifty and very active you need a lot more than 1500.   If you were under 21 that number would increase to 1800.

A healthy (over 21) male your weight, walking briskly for an hour and a half each day is using up nearer 2700-3000 cals a day.   BTW..... BMR is the amount of energy your body needs just to keep your heart pumping and your lungs going in and out.  It doesn't allow for any movement.  If you've calculated that number to be 2250 then you really shouldn't go below that.

It would be quite significant if you were to lose 1% of your body-weight each week.  In your case that's between 1lb and 1.5lbs.  2lbs a week is unrealistic and 1200 cals a day is unsafe.
