Dumb Question? DSL without paying for a landline?

Quote  |  Reply

I always thought you had to have a land-line to get DSL, now I think I've heard different.

Can I just pay my phone company for my DSL line and shut of the land-line?   Even though I have a "$30 package" (no long distance, don't need it) for the land-line, with all the taxes and fees it's actuallyy $41.84 that I could be saving each month by relying only on our cell phones.  I have Bellsouth (now AT&T) if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Hey.  I've only got a sec, but I wanted to let you know that I just checked on this for a friend.  Don't know if it makes a difference with the promotion, but it might - he has no home phone at all.  He has AT&T (formerly BellSouth) also.  They call it their "DSL Lite version" for $19.95/mo, and it supposedly works just the same as with the phone line.  I'm guessing speed is probably not the fastest version of DSL, but it should be more than acceptable.  I didn't think to ask whether they made you pay anything for the modem, but she didn't mention it when she said they would send the modem and you'd get it in about a week.  There is a credit check to see if they need to get a deposit from you.  Call them and ask the what-ifs, but it's totally possible.  (Surprised me.)  Good luck - gotta run!

my DSL is provided by my cable company.  i've bundled cable and internet, but that's optional.

if you cancel your phone, you probably won't save much, but if you're already using a cell, it's probably worth it.

you'll have to talk to your provider.

Were out in the boonies, no cable option available unfortunately, or that's what I'd do.

I already have the DSL (the $34 version - I tried the $19 "Lite" let your freind know it wasn't much faster than dialup - the only benefit is using the phone while on the internet).

I just wanted to know if anyone's done it.  I'm afraid that if I call them they may not exactly tell the truth.  In my prior experience cleaning up my mom's bills they suckered her into, I've found phone telephone company reps to be just as bad as a used car dealer.    Thanks though.

I think this is a newer option.  I agree, sales reps have a tendency to make empty promises.
