Is Duncan Hines Cake Mix vegan? PLZ ANSWER

Quote  |  Reply
I know you can make homemade vegan cake mix but on various sites I've seen that people say Duncan Hines cake mixes are vegan, however I was at the store today and saw that in the ingredients that the cake mix has mono and tri glycerides or something like that. I know that you can get those from animal fats or veggie oils--so does that mean that because all of the sites say they are vegan that they are and the source is from veggie oils?? I've noticed on the frosting they don't all have mono gylcerides in them but 3 of them that don't are on the peta approved vegan list but none of the cake mixes are.......I'm just trying to find a popular brand available at the grocery store that is a vegan cake mix........

I don't know about Duncan Hines but any brand of cake mix that is Kosher (Parve) should be vegan.  My son is allergic to milk and I use a brand called Manischewitz.  Most grocery stores will have an ethnic foods section and you can find Kosher foods there.
Not all Kosher (Parve) foods are vegan. They can contain honey, eggs, and even fish. They are completely free of dairy and meat from mammals and birds.
If you re-read my post you will note that I did say CAKE MIX and SHOULD BE.  I haven't yet found a cake mix with fish as an ingredient and usually you add the eggs yourself (I use bananas or applesauce instead).  I suppose it would be possible that some cake mixes may contain honey but none I have used have yet.
Ah, I was being theoretical and you were being practical. My mistake.
We don't have an ethnics food section at the grocery store I go to. I live in texas so I go to H-E-B, but does Wal-Mart Supercenter have an ethnics food section? Also, so Duncan Hines is not vegan......?

I think that some Duncan Hines ARE vegan, AGAIN.

The confusion & discussions whether it is or isn't lies with that fact that they WERE vegan, then a few years ago they changed the recipes to add DAIRY to them! There was a huge vegan uproar and vegans all over were emailing Duncan Hines to complain about the change in their recipe. I guess they got the hint and recently changed back to the old recipe and removed the dairy again, thus professing it's once again VEGAN. So through all that we are led to believe the rest of the ingredients are in fact vegan as well. Peta used to have them on the list, then took them off because of the dairy thing, and perhaps just haven't put them back on yet since the revert back to old recipe is fairly recent.

Of course I'm not betting my life on it, but as a vegan I DO use some of the duncan hines products and assume they are in fact truely vegan again.

Hope that helps!

oh & for other cake mixes:

Dr Oetkers Organics is also vegan (or at least all of the flavors i've seen/used), which I've seen at regular grocery stores not just health food stores. There's also another brand cherry something... cherrybrook maybe? that is vegan.

I make cake using the Namaste cake mix- it's gluten free, dairy free, nut free, etc. I then substituted apple sauce and a banana for the eggs.
Thanks, yes that helps. I am a vegetarian but I will be converting to a vegan starting January 1st so I was wondering if that would be suitable for a vegan. I am making a cake for Thanksgiving and I suppose I'll use Duncan Hines but I think in the near future when I become a vegan I'll make my own homeade cake mix just to be 100% positive. Thanks though---very helpful :)

I don't know, but on their site they say this:

Q  Is there an easy way to make your mix recipes cholesterol-free?

A  Yes. Simply follow the cholesterol-free recipe on the back of the Duncan Hines packaging. Please dont be tempted to use egg substitutes or to do away with the eggs altogether or the texture will be negatively affected .

So if the mix itself is vegan, the cake, as they strongly urge you to make it, is not.

Either way it's not healthy. $0.02

I always sub 1/4 cup applesauce for 1 egg and it turns out perfectly, including with the duncan hines mix.  They just urge against messing with the recipe because people are idiots and they don't want to be blamed if the cake turns out terribly.

I keep those little "single serving" applesauces on hand which are 1/2 cup size so they equal 2 eggs. very handy and no leftover containers bulking up my fridge and getting moldy.
