Can I eat bread with kidney disease?

I have a problem with my kidneys and I was given this list of food to avoid: banana, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, coconut, cream, dried fruit, dried peas and beans, lentils, melon, milk, molasses, nuts, orange, peanut butter, potassium chloride (KCl), potato, raisins, dark rye flour, frozen vegetables packed with sauce, spinach, tomato, wheat and oat bran, whole wheat. Should I avoid whole wheat bread and eat white bread instead? By avoiding these foods, will I prevent damage to my kidneys?
Answer
You are on a low potassium diet, and white bread is fine to eat. See this list of foods to eat and avoid on a low potassium diet from the National Kidney Foundation. A potassium restriction does not slow the progression of kidney disease, but it prevents hyperkalemia, a higher than normal level of potassium in the blood, which can lead to cardiac arrest. Because the renal diet is complex and can change frequently during the course of illness, you might want to consult with a dietitian who specializes in kidney disease. To find a dietitian, ask your nephrologist or visit the Dietitians of Canada.
