Is it okay to eat 1000 calories a day?
Asked by anonymous on Nov 30, 2008 in Weight Loss

My stats are 5'8, 180 lbs and I want to lose 25lbs as quickly and safely as possible.

Answer

It would be healthier to eat 1700 calories a day, but please don't eat fewer than 1200 calories.  For you, 1200 calories should lead to a loss of 1½ pounds per week, which is quite fast.  To improve your chances of lifelong weight control, try to lose weight slowly.  Focus on your behaviors more than on your weight.  Remember: when you eat fewer calories, you deprive your body of nutrients and breakdown your muscle for fuel.  With less muscle, you need fewer calories and your weight levels off quickly.  Restrictive dieting can lead to binging and a lifetime of yo-yo dieting.
