What do you eat on your cheat days?
Do you guys just eat more healthy food/higher cal healthy food, or do you go all out with the junk to up your cals?
Just curious - thinking I will have one very soon but not quite sure how to go about it :)
Oh, and also, if I am eating 1800 cals, what's a good number to go up to on a cheat day?
It depends...
Sometimes I like to go out for a meal, if I do that I just eat my other meals as normal for the day and enjoy myself in the evening. Even so, when I eat out I try and choose something healthy, but its a treat becasue I try and choose an interesting food I would never eat at home or cook myself. like...swordfish or tapas or something, so its a nice change.
Other days I would just have the more high calorie healthy food, like macadamia and cashew nuts on my cereal in the morning, cheese on my sandwich at lunch, some dark chocolate etc.
I tend to take advantage of any events coming up to coincide with a day when I eat more food than normal. I don't like the phrase 'cheat day' because that sounds rather deceitful and furtive. After all, this is something you're doing consciously, deliberately and for good reasons! So if there's a party or some other occasion I'll be quite relaxed about a glass or two of wine or a slice of cake, for example. I prefer good quality foods over junk so I might have a real treat like a fillet steak or some dark chocolate.... take advantage of the extra cals that way.
A good amount to go with would be your maintenance calorie intake or your 'total burn' in your burn meter as CC would have it.
On a 'cheat' day, I usually eat out for supper and just don't worry about the calories.
I love cheat days! I learned it many years ago from a weight lifter I greatly respected.
Breakfast is usual the normal high fiber cereal & soymilk or egg & toast - or I skip it [which is what I prefer, but I force breakfast most days] and have a couple of cups of coffee the way I really like it with sugar and Coffeemate.
Lunch - pizza! Any kind I feel like having that day, 2 slices
Dinner- usually go out for Indian food, Mexican or seafood and I don't think about calories
Dessert - oh yes, definitely dessert, what is a cheat day with out dessert? Homemade apple pie & ice cream, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, or cookies
Cheat days are about indulgence for me. I eat 'clean' the rest of the week and I am very satisfied with the arrangement. If I have a 'craving' it isn't bad because I just tell myself 'cheat' day is only a couple of days away. It then becomes no big deal and I move on. I have been losing steadily this way. If anything, it gives me a little of the 'zig zag' action and keeps my body guessing.
I never enter the foods in my food log at CC on cheat days! Once the day is done, I don't want to look back and feel guilty for it. That would be doing it for the wrong reasons.
I love cheat days, or as i call them, Treat Days ![]()
On my treat days i eat my daily calories as shown on my burn meter in anything i want. Each to their own, but on my treat days i still eat a regular breakfast because i would rather have treat snacks. For lunch i may have more peanut butter on bread or crackers because i love it or i will have an extra bread roll for dinner and more sauce on my hotdog or butter on my bread roll. To me this is a treat because usually i don't want to waste my calories on bbq sauce or some butter.
But apart from that, i will snack on a chocolate bar, 2-3 cookies, a one scoop ice-cream, small piece of cake etc. Like i said, i would rather eat normal main meals and eat yummy snacks but you could enjoy pancakes for breakfast or pizza for lunch. So i still have lots of yummy snacks but rather than eat 10 cookies, 3 chocolate bars, 1/4 of a cake and a huge bowl of ice-cream, i am eating what i like but in smaller amounts so when the next day comes, i don't feel guilty.
I think the thing is, is to not deprive yourself on your treat day because then you will just go crazy and eat everything. I use to be like "ok i will have this one chocolate bar in the afternoon and thats it, that will be my treat". But then i would go crazy and eat everything because it wasn't really a huge treat and it was all over so fast. So don't deprive yourself on your treat day but still make a conscious effort to eat your favourite healthy foods but maybe more of them on your treat day too! ![]()
